To be completely shocked about someone I used to know

When my youngest was at primary school I really liked this woman who had kids either side of mine.

She was in the PTA equivalent and was just a nice woman. There was no drama around her.

I remember having a day off and went into the local cafe, and she invited me to sit with her friends. She was funny, warm and witty.

Significantly, she had friends of all ethnicities and her best friend was Asian.

Everybody will relate to being busy but I think if it was a different time in my life or we had kids in same year we would have been mates.

I am absolutely shocked that she is a member of a right wing political party and has a presence in that party, utterly and completely shocked.

I know it’s not illegal but God.

All three of my siblings are Tories, I’m not someone who thinks everyone has to think like me but I am stunned.

Mumsnet hates this, but I have had a physical reaction to the news. I am just Gobsmacked and weirdly let down and I do know that’s a stupid, irrational thing to say.

All I have taken from this thread now is that anyone who is interested or knows anything about.politics comes across as really rude and belittling. And by most people's logic on this thread, you must all be right wing.

Geez. Can you all stop calling each other dim etc.

Its like a chimpanzees tea party where they throw faeces at each other.

Political sophisticates 🤣🤣🤣

blablasmthsmth · 03/05/2024 19:17

"You're right wing.

You're a disgrace."

Please tell me you're trolling @StMarieforme

"This thread is a perfect advert for the sanctity of the secret ballot, though!"

This is so true @MrRydersParlourGame

I remember as a child asking my dad who he was voting for and he actually told me off 😅 he told me it's private and personal and to mind my own business! I wish we'd just go back to that tbh.

Yes, similar here with my mum! Quite wise, our parents, as it turns out...!

StMarieforme · 03/05/2024 19:07

You don't have to be white British to be racist.

So, are you trying to say that he hates white people? I don't know, he may well do, but that would hardly make him right wing would it?

Or fit in with the OP's assertion that this party are extremely right wing?

There are plenty of racists (of all ethnicities) that support all parties.

HeatPumpBoilerStuff · 03/05/2024 19:23

After decades spent respecting other peoples politics, always trying to listen to other viewpoints, not judging different thoughts to mine etc. I admit that I'm failing now.

This Tory government is so morally-bankrupt, cruel, and contemptuous in their incompetence and self-serving viciousness that it's become impossible not to judge people for cheerleading more of the same with their vote.

I cannot square being a compassionate and civilised person with voting for more of this appalling direction of Tory travel, I just can't.

watermelonsugar56 · 03/05/2024 19:23

I thought she was going to be a paedophile or something. Nice to know you’re not judging people for their political views 🙄

THere are lots of left leaning types who'd say its worse.

I thought that was Humza Yousaf?
"White! White! White!"

*disclaimer - lighthearted.

It’s not classic conspiracy theorist behaviour to call someone naive, out of touch, blind, misunderstanding, is it? Of course not. It’s completely sane behaviour.

Sorry, I’ve absolutely no idea what that word salad means. Have you?

GardenGnomeDefender · 03/05/2024 19:26

What's the point of this thread if you don't say which party?

GardenGnomeDefender · 03/05/2024 19:27

Oh, it's Reform.

Yeah it matters, can you edit the original post to add that info in and stop wasting people's time?

Polishedshoesalways · 03/05/2024 19:27

BNP I would be a 100% behind you but Reform? It’s up to her fgs. She can support whoever she likes. Who on earth you to judge or care. This has got to be a wind up surely!

And there folks is the real face of the left ..

I’m the face of the left - my Mother would have been proud 😂😂😂

StMarieforme · 03/05/2024 19:03

You're right wing.

You're a disgrace.

LOL. 😂 I am assuming you are taking the mick???

Otherwise you are proving my point (and that of many others) that SOME left wing (especially far left,) are as narrow minded and bigoted as some far right - if not worse! 😬

SabreIsMyFave · 03/05/2024 19:34

@Delawear · Today 18:49

Right wing people aren’t necessarily bad. But they are usually boring and sometimes annoying. Weirdly they seem to like me because on the surface I’m polite and easy going. I say, ‘yes it would be lovely to have a coffee with you some time’ and then I never contact them.

I bet these right wing folk you promise to meet (and then don't) are DEVASTATED that they never see you again! 🙄

😆 This thread is the gift that keeps on giving! 😂

Usernameisnotavailable0 · 03/05/2024 19:34

Thank you to the pp who sent me the link to Reform. I didn't even need to click on the link to see what had offended the OP.

It's the Brexit party. Lol. Bore off OP and move on.

I cannot believe adults are still 'falling out' with people who voted for Brexit.

Or even start threads.

pugwash4x4 · 03/05/2024 19:34

TO be fair, being left wing is far more evil than being right. Socialism, communism and other left wing ideologies have slaughtered literally millions of people, compared to the right. On a micro level the left want to denude people of self respect, self reliance and dictate what people think and feel. The modern left is scarily close to 1984.

The only surprise is how the left has convinced many of the population that they are somehow moral. You really can't trust anyone that votes hard left(but then you can't trust anyone who votes hard right either). It always makes me laugh when someone makes a comedy statement like "I'd never f* a Tory"- they just sound like fascists!

Fwiw, I'm almost exactly centre and wholly libertarian which means I have no party to vote for

Edited

It's strange how most people wouldn't bat an eye at the far left but are outraged by the far right.

swimlyn · 03/05/2024 19:36

Well, Netanyahu is now calling Erdoğan a ‘dictator‘, over his recent No Trade decision. I think he needs to look in the mirror.

An individual’s politics does matter in the long run of course. Be careful who you vote for...

It's pathetic isn't it? Like FFS grow up! 🙄And move on! It's been 8 years since the LEAVE vote won!

I know. So tedious. They have probably run out of real friends to listen to their rants so they come on here, to torture all of us.

100% this

QueenCamilla · 03/05/2024 19:40

I am an immigrant and I just joined Reform.

If the current liberal-flavoured politics driven by the protected elite carry on much longer... Well, they'll fuck up this lovely country for everyone - including all those "doctors&dentists".

What are the elite protected from? From the reality.

OP is shocked that someone she knows can be warm and friendly, as well as intelligent and critically thinking. Says more about the OP than the woman in question.

juggleit · 03/05/2024 19:41

Some of the most right wing people I know give tremendous amounts to charity so I don't think its binary, good or bad in being one political persuasion or another.

Some are quite open about their political views.

I suppose there is more to being right wing than just your view on immigration/welfare etc, perhaps a strong leaning to entrepreneurialism which in itself is not a terrible thing!

I think you have over reacted a bit.
