Company announcement, what could it be?

In your experiences, when you have been told there is a company announcement, what has it turned out to be?

I'm currently off work, but have been told there is an announcement tomorrow and that I must attend unless it's absolutely impossible that I can't.

My first thought is redundancies. What else could it be?

Use the see all function to read at least op’s updates.

This doesn't work on the android app

Lifeomars · 01/05/2024 18:26

I have had this happen to me 3 times. once it was when a service I worked for was put into special measures and the other times were redundancies. Never known it to be good news, sorry.

Then just visit the mobile website on your phone instead of using the app, works fine on Android.

Many years ago it was because we had been bought by a bigger company. Shares went through the roof and we all did very well out of share options.
I hope it's something like that for you.

bluebag27 · 01/05/2024 12:45

No, what is that?

Mergers will usually mean a period of uncertainty and change, this could be anything from a few months to years.

There most likely will be winners and losers. Promotions, bigger jobs and perceived demotions, job losses and redundancies as they restructure the new organisation.

At this early stage of the merger plans will be very high level, they probably don't even know themselves what the outcome will be for individuals. Try not to worry and enjoy your maternity leave until there are further announcements.

Had the same in December and it was that we were merging with a larger firm.

Do you work for an audit, accounting, tax firm in the NW...?

As an employment lawyer, It’s definitely redundancies. Sorry.

In your defence you never said you were a good employment lawyer.

ItsMintUpNorth · 01/05/2024 20:42

@Sparticle yes! Assuming you also do I hope you enjoyed your cupcake today to celebrate 🙄

I had a company announcement to discuss a man at the company transitioning to a woman and the name she would be using from now on etc..

I had that too. Explaining why they would be using the ladies toilets from now on etc. That wasn't a medical company was it. Weird if we worked in the same place.

AnxietyLevelMax · 01/05/2024 20:59

I had the same like a month or two ago, even posted here too. they shut down one factory.

RSMarlie · 01/05/2024 21:02

Public sector (Local Authority) - both times it was regarding a ‘restructure’ (redundancy).
A merger is likely to be the start of changes.

Timeforacuppanow · 01/05/2024 21:10

Sorry but the company I work for has had at least one of these every year for the last 14 years and it has been redundancies every time. (Not many people left now compared with 14 years ago) I hope it’s not but good luck with whatever happens x

Kona84 · 01/05/2024 21:11

I work for a company that merged a few years ago- it’s still in progress.
every now and again redundancies are announced but I’ve not been affected yet.

they aligned our work policies, holidays etc. aligned pay supposedly but really they re bracketed roles and still have people at the higher end. The company we bought were 40 hour weeks we are only 35 so their hours were reduced but pay remained same

I left the firm in the middle of March, just before the merger went through at the start of April... Will DM you :)

DodoTired · 01/05/2024 21:25

Merger can still result in restructuring and redundancies so if I were you I’d brush up your CV and start putting feelers for other jobs out

Franticbutterfly · 01/05/2024 21:30

That we were all being made redundant unless we moved to Slough.

Arsehole Ltd? Applies to a LOT of companies.

ItsMintUpNorth · 01/05/2024 22:00

@justasking111 no initials were M&S but now you have me intrigued Grin sorry to hijack your thread OP!

Sparticle · 01/05/2024 22:15

@justasking111 I’m also intrigued now! There’s a lot of it about clearly.

Dartwarbler · 01/05/2024 22:15

Normally redundancy

most people “currently off work “ would not be requested to go in if merger, new ceo etc. especially if you’re on maternity (might have to take baby in which could be HSE issue) or sick leave (HSE issue to pressure someone to attend work who is ill). Even holidays may cause issue if you’re away.

sadly redundancy (high still could be a result of takeover, merger etc) is likely to be most likely . I had 40 years plus in businesses and ONLY time this ever happened was for redundancy. All the others, even where redundancy was voluntary or a possibility for some people, was an on site personnel roll out and then catch up with absent staff by phone over next few days. In ALL cases holiday people were left untouched as deemed unfair to complete wreck their holidays with company news no matter how bad.

im sorry you’ve got a worrying night ahead …it is always the worse time when you don’t know what is happening and fear takes hold. Try to get some sleep. 😴

if it’s over something as stupid as ceo change or a merger that isn’t directly leading to redundancy, then I’d be rising a fecking complaint frankly. There’s no need to make you attend work when “off” for that- a phone call chat with manager will suffice. That’s just piss poor management and disrespectful to employees (find yourself a new jobbasao if that’s the case 🤷🏼‍♀️)

Sparticle · 01/05/2024 22:15

We're actually clients, but have become uncomfortable with these mergers/takeovers. We were going to look into changing. Only last week.

DarkDarkNight · 01/05/2024 23:14

3 out of 3 times for me it’s been a reconfiguration with redundancies. Hope it’s better news for you. Sometimes these things can actually work out well if you were looking to move on and there is a good redundancy package.
