AIBU to have thrown my morning run away cos I’m sick of being cold

I’ve seen similar threads re this but I’m just FUMING. It’s MAY and it’s still f*cking freezing cold.
I’ve just got up and gone to the coast, got out the car ran about half a K and turned around and come home in a strop.

Also- the heating has had to be on intermittently throughout April because I’ve got a 8month old.

I feel so friggen down with it, I fight SAD so hard during the winter months, wrap up get hiking even in the pouring rain.

We lived in aus for a few years and it’s just so much better weather wise, you can plan stuff, you can be outside even when you’re feeling sad and shit. Here’s just miserable 24/7 and it’s been winter for 7 months!

does the op not run at all between early November to mid March usually?

Edited

She probably does, but normally the shit weather doesn't last for four-six months straight like it has this year. We normally get a decent few days of cold, crisp sunshine, as well as warmer spring days and milder, dry winter days.

This year in particular has just been spectacularly shite. It's no wonder people are fed up.

i’m hoping it means summer stretches in to october as it’s done previously!

It's not that OP won't push through because of "late April weather", though. It's because we've had the same shit weather for months on end with barely a break. I work outdoors and last week was the first time since about October that I wasn't wearing a coat to work.

It's totally normal to get sick of going out in the pissing rain and howling wind for the 100th day running. It doesn't mean she won't go next week or even tomorrow - she's just fed up and that's okay.

Exactly. I don't know why this very simple concept is out of the grasp of the posters on this thread, but it is highly annoying.

JuanTabo · 28/04/2024 16:05

loverofbestbuy I don’t run at all, I struggle to get outside for three short walks a day between November and February. A treadmill could be helpful but it’s nowhere near as good as moving around outside.

This is so untrue. It's a proven fact that the weather can affect people's mood. No amount of positive thinking can change that. I'm not even taking about extreme sad but it does have an effect to varying degrees. Especially when you want to take part in a sport that is primarily outdoors.

You can find "evidence" to support any position you may decide to take.

There is a good body of reasearch evidence to support mine so I'm sticking with it.

At the end of the day the OPs view of things is making her feel worse so it's not working for her.

but then you go straight into training for events in March? sounds like your a serious runner?

JuanTabo · 28/04/2024 16:12

loverofbestbuy not serious enough! I’m a fair weather runner.

Feeling temporarily fed up about something doesn't mean your "view of things isn't working". It means you're human and get frustrated and annoyed sometimes. It's normal.

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/04/2024 16:14

In January and February you fully expect to be running in lousy weather. You layer up and head out anyway BUT either it’s crisp and cold (which is very nice) or dampish but you know usually there aren’t that many of those days, so you look forward to being able to head out without the layers. By this time of year it is usually nice enough to go out without all the kit and kaboodle and enjoy some blue skies, fresh air, sun in your face even if there are showers and a bit of wind. So to STILL be slogging round in mud and biting wind IS tedious, it IS off putting and it doesn’t mean you’re not used to running, it’s the opposite, it feels like you’ve done your time in the horrible weather and are really ready for it to change.

And no it isn’t like this every spring. I have plenty of photos from runs in March and April where I’m in short sleeves and the sky is blue.

JuanTabo · 28/04/2024 16:15

I’m training now for an event next January. I’ll taper at the end of December/early Jan but I have taken up to six weeks off before a marathon before and just cross trained indoors instead. Most of it is in your head tbh and I’m not worried about getting PBs at my age.

I would agree with you if she was a bit fed up but she is more than just a bit fed up she was deeply upset.

I live on a smallholding in an exposed spot in Scotland. I go out to tend to animals three times a day in winter and I'm not unhappy about it - I enjoy what I do.

I've no doubt others would hate it. But that would be because of the view they take of it. The weather is not in control of how people feel.

Rosestulips · 28/04/2024 16:55

I don’t know how people run when there is ice on the ground. I’m so scared of slipping

AndromedaGalaxyBar · 28/04/2024 16:57

Totally understand- weather can massively impact mood. I’d say that before 90% of the runs I do, I have no motivation to go out, but in 18 years of regular running I’ve only regretted about 3 runs (due to falling over/injury etc). I try to remind myself of that when the motivation is low!

There’s no such as thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.

When I run in the cold I have my hat/ear band, gloves, run jacket, thermal socks. Sounds like you were not prepared.

You can be kitted out in half of Cotswold Ourdoors and still find trudging through endless mud to be depressing beyond words. Last time I checked you can’t buy clothes that make paths firm, or at least not ankle deep mud, underfoot.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2024 17:07

I went for a wade through the mud walk in the woods this afternoon after the rain had stopped. It simply isn't safe to run therevbecause you would just end up on your back. The Trans Pennine Trail runs through our village and it is so busy just now because it is the only off road place to run, walk and cycle that isn't muddy.

It's ok in daylight cos you can see it and slow down or go round it. Not so much at night!

I run on cycle paths, which don't ever get gritted. I just have to go on the grass. Carefully!

I struggle walking on ice never mind running 😂

I never understand why people have to respond to ‘I hate the cold’ posts with ‘well you’re wrong. I love freezing rain and all you need to do is wear proper clothing, cultivate a stiff upper lip, and agree that anything over 10 degrees is unbearable’.

I totally understand you OP, and I have lived in Aus too and miss the weather.

Sometimes runs go badly, sometimes they go better than expected. I often find a workout video on YouTube if I can’t get out.

Well, for me it’s because it’s helpful to remember it’s swings and roundabouts and the weather we like will come 😊 I loathe the heat! I love running in the rain and dread July/August especially as heat waves are becoming more frequent - even going out at 6am is baking, and I get hot enough running without overheating in horrid hot temperatures!

So I hope when I post about struggling and hating the heat, OP can respond to let me know she loves it and at least I’ll know someone does! And remember the happier times for me will
come in Autumn.

We can all have a conversation without being pitted against one another…

Haruka · 28/04/2024 18:37

I don't run, but I have an exercise bike at home. I feel much warmer throughout the day if I've had a chance to use it. So by all means throw out the run, but replace it with something else to keep your core temperature up. It is one thing that helps me in this seemingly endless grey.

I get so tired of the 'brace up, there's no bad weather, only bad clothes'. It is such utter bullshit. The grey and the rain is depressing, no amount of clothing is going to fix that. It really pisses me off haha. I actually had a dream the other night where Rishi Sunak was caught in a meeting saying that there was the technology to improve the weather and drive clouds away so we'd have glorious sunshine, but that he couldn't be bothered to implement it. I thought the dream surprisingly accurate.

But you're acting like it's not okay to be upset about things sometimes - it really doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong or need to "change your view".

FWIW I work outdoors and love what I do as well, but that doesn't mean I don't sometimes feel massively down about going out in the horizontal rain and knee deep mud for the fifth week straight.

It's really got nothing to do with the "view I choose to take" - I'm just human and it's normal for humans to get upset over silly or irrational things sometimes.

fieldsofbutterflies · 28/04/2024 18:50

Tell me about it @MsLuxLisbon. I also find it really frustrating to listen to because, like you say, it's bollocks. There's no clothing out there that can protect you from horizontal rain battering you in the face for hours on end.

I work outdoors. I love what I do, I really do, but there are only so many days in a row that you can go out and trudge through ankle deep mud with rain battering your face before you just want to cry, lol.
