I’ve seen similar threads re this but I’m just FUMING. It’s MAY and it’s still f*cking freezing cold.
I’ve just got up and gone to the coast, got out the car ran about half a K and turned around and come home in a strop.

Also- the heating has had to be on intermittently throughout April because I’ve got a 8month old.

I feel so friggen down with it, I fight SAD so hard during the winter months, wrap up get hiking even in the pouring rain.

We lived in aus for a few years and it’s just so much better weather wise, you can plan stuff, you can be outside even when you’re feeling sad and shit. Here’s just miserable 24/7 and it’s been winter for 7 months!

Jesus, what is it with the people who descend on threads determined to be superior and make the OP feel shit for ever being pissed off about anything.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 28/04/2024 13:14

I agree with you - I have run all through winter and the start of spring but today I was defeated by the cold and rain and decided to call it a rest day and do some strength training indoors.

Tomorrow looks nicer where I am and good running weather but sadly I will be stuck in an office.

ThomCruise · 28/04/2024 13:47

I would never quit a run because of the cold in April!
I'm not super hard core, but I and the members of my social running club all run in the winter in freezing conditions - and often in driving rain, although that really is shit.
You just need a long sleeve zip up top and some running gloves - in winter though, not April.

ThomCruise · 28/04/2024 13:50

Although the weather has been appalling. Trail running is out for me at the moment because all trails local to us are now impassable with sludge.

I can’t relate, I’ve been running all through winter and never once felt cold. I have been going out in a t shirt for at least the last 6 weeks but before that I’d put a jumper on and take it off within 5 minutes. Does running not make you hot?

But yes, it is dragging on a bit now but it’s nothing new. It never warms up before May then everyone complains it’s too hot (me included)

Running doesn’t make me that hot unless it’s hot ie well above 20. When I did a half marathon I had 3 layers on, gave my husband rhe jacket at 10km and took it back to put back on at 15km. Then after distance exercise as I cool
down I get really cold, I need hot drinks and a shower. And I’m in Australia 😆. I used to run with the uni cross country club and some women ran in wool thermals. Cold women like me.

BrokenCamberEdge · 28/04/2024 13:52

Why didn’t you just wait until later when the rain stops? That’s what I’m doing, swapped the usual morning for an evening run.

But April is just a month, it doesn't mean warm
My friend is still in a jacket and gloves
I went to a retail park today wearing a vest, long sleeved top and a coatigan. It's cold!

Loafbeginsat60 · 28/04/2024 14:18

It's just horrible isn't it. I am outside dealing with animals all the time - lambing, calving and it's just miserable.
Mud. Rain. Cold.

Enough! It's nearly May!!!

What is the use of saying to the OP 'I would never quit because of the cold'? Bully for you, but you're not her. Some of us are just fed up beyond bearing with this foul cold and want it to STOP. The jolly hockeysticksing on this thread and similar is beyond annoying.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2024 14:22

Why didn’t you just wait until later when the rain stops?

Because in some parts of Britain it hasn't stopped for days on end.

JassyRadlett · 28/04/2024 14:22

I'm with you OP. I quite happily ran all through the depths of winter, even though I'm a terrible runner and hate the cold. It was fine, sometimes it was nearly enjoyable. Did my first 10k events in Feb and March, really fun, no problem.

But the weather of the last month has finally sapped all the desire to run out of me. It's just been so bloody miserable and while it's objectively warmer than, say, January it's not more enjoyable. It's just grim.

Drttc · 28/04/2024 14:41

I run most days (for about 12 years now) and can’t say I mind! I prefer cooler mornings as I get really hot and tend to slow down if overheating. Had a baby in March though (last run right before birth and then 2 week break) so my runs are particularly precious ‘me time’ right now!

when you say “right before birth”… you were running at 9 months?!

Im a runner but very oddly i didn’t run from the day i found out pregnant. Can’t put my finger on it… just had no inclination to. Thought i’d never get back in to it. 10 months post birth i was well and truly back on it thank goodness!

I'm cold too, walking around a retail park.
But when you get running, normally you quickly do warm up.

It's not jokey hockey sticks (whatever that means). I agree that the weather is shit. I guess I'm just thinking that if someone won't push through with a run in late April weather, they might find there isn't much of the year when they will be able to get out.

But this isn't 'late April weather', is it? Normally the weather in April is mid late teens, and mild and lovely. Not this year, it is freezing and miserable and I'm completely over it.

loverofbestbuy · 28/04/2024 15:20

does the op not run at all between early November to mid March usually?

it’s grotty for april yes

but it’s patently not freezing

it is however freezing in jan and feb… does the op run then?

JassyRadlett · 28/04/2024 15:31

I think the thing with April has been that it's been very windy, and that wind has had such a cold bite to it. I find running in wind - especially that sort of wind that has big gusts or a bit of ice in it - much less pleasant than when it's colder but the wind is lower.

And April has been a total bastard for wind and rain.

Where are you? I’m on the Wirral and I don’t like road running so generally drive to the coast or large country parks x

I'm also on the Wirral and was out first thing with the dog this morning. It wasn't THAT cold at all. I wore a big coat and after an hour's brisk walking I was boiling.

It is barely warmer than Jan and Feb this year, it has been quite dire. I can't understand people who say this crap is normal.

Don’t know about the OP but I don’t run in the UK during those months. I see specifically train for events much closer to the equator at that time of year but that’s not practical or possible for everyone.

There are peculiarities of running that don’t apply to other outdoor activities such as walking, cycling, riding a horse. Waterproof running shoes are impractical if your feet sweat or swell after a few miles. It’s easy to wait for a less breezy or rainy interval for other activities but you have to plan what to eat and when well ahead of time if you’re running. At least I do, I need 3 - 5 hours to digest my food.

I wish I didn’t hate treadmills so much!

It's not that OP won't push through because of "late April weather", though. It's because we've had the same shit weather for months on end with barely a break. I work outdoors and last week was the first time since about October that I wasn't wearing a coat to work.

It's totally normal to get sick of going out in the pissing rain and howling wind for the 100th day running. It doesn't mean she won't go next week or even tomorrow - she's just fed up and that's okay.

AhBiscuits · 28/04/2024 15:54

I sacked my run off this morning too. Woke up to the sound of pouring rain and just thought
Fuck this shit.
