I’ve seen similar threads re this but I’m just FUMING. It’s MAY and it’s still f*cking freezing cold.
I’ve just got up and gone to the coast, got out the car ran about half a K and turned around and come home in a strop.

Also- the heating has had to be on intermittently throughout April because I’ve got a 8month old.

I feel so friggen down with it, I fight SAD so hard during the winter months, wrap up get hiking even in the pouring rain.

We lived in aus for a few years and it’s just so much better weather wise, you can plan stuff, you can be outside even when you’re feeling sad and shit. Here’s just miserable 24/7 and it’s been winter for 7 months!

I'm a runner. Just write today off. Let it be.

I remember a quote from a tubby pie-scoffing 50 something meteorologist I follow on Facebook (he's a brilliant forecaster). He's also an ultra runner with an impressive list of achievements under his belt.

"Good run or shit run, every one of them makes you stronger."

Your half a K was still better than 0. Today was a shit run.

Fwiw I kwym. I'm so depleted by the grey and the cold. I curse at the forecast. I sigh at the window. I know how much better it would be if the sun was out.
This isn't about your failure to run, it's about your aggravation at the weather.
I'm sick of it too.

ThreeEggOmlette · 28/04/2024 09:59

Yes, I'm with you too OP.

And appreciate you are neither looking for advice on running routes or what you should be wearing. Sounds like you can do all of that, you just want spring to... Spring.

The wind gets to me - I can do cold, I can do rain, but the wind makes running so much harder. And my bones ache in the cold, it's age but I ache less in the warmer weather.

I've been doing more yoga & strength than running just lately to try to stay in routine & maybe help with the achiness.

Meadowfinch · 28/04/2024 10:00

Yanbu. I haven't been running this weekend either. I'm sick of needing layers just to open the door.
I'm off to Scotland tomorrow on a business trip and I'm staring at clothes I've been wearing for months. I'm so bored with them. It's just grim.

I went to the same event last year and strolled around in linen trousers, a little linen jacket and sandals.

This year it's jeans, sweaters and a waterproof ☹️

I NEVER complain it's too hot 😀

Overthebs · 28/04/2024 10:01

PrincessPeaches123 · 28/04/2024 09:58

Completely agree. I'm sick of it. I'm cold to my core.

Thank you you’ve summarised how I feel perfectly.. it’s more than simply feeling a bit chilly now and again and putting extra layers on.. my bones are constantly cold..

I'm also a runner and I feel your pain. I am cold-blooded and can run in long sleeves and leggings perfectly comfortably for 8-9 months in the year and prefer it a bit cooler to too hot. I do warm up properly which helps on cold mornings. But what I hate more than the cold is the endless mud and sloppy wet feet. It is mostly worth slogging through though!

Catopia · 28/04/2024 10:02

I'm still procrastinating about going. It's chucking it down, all my favourite routes are going to be flooded and I don't want to go outside. I am not a fair weather runner by any means, but I'm not currently training for anything (I'm pregnant) and seriously lacking motivation to force myself out there to get cold and wet. Considering the treadmill. Need to make a decision though as we have lunch guests arriving in 3 hours (lunch is pretty much made - I have done something productive whilst procrastinating at least!).

Anywhere from 10k to half marathon.. when it’s good conditions I’ve gone further.. luckily our coast is good for getting marathon distances in

in that case… there will be lots of local routes that will get you to parks and country without the arse of driving

WingsofRain · 28/04/2024 10:05

Being cold and feeling at one with the elements is the best part of outdoor exercise, YABVU to moan about the weather. You are going to have months when it’s going to be far too hot to run coming up.

curtaintwitcher78 · 28/04/2024 10:07

Because there were a couple warm days last week I thought that we were done, so I put my big coat in the attic, along with some jumpers. I am regretting it now. It's freezing.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/04/2024 10:10

I work away quite a bit and I'm getting fed up of having to pack multiple coats, and clothes for different weathers! I'd like it to warm up a bit now too.

My local parkrun has a section that has been flooded since November and is effectively a ford, and my tolerance for drying out my trainers multiple times a week is going so I'm trying to run when/where it's drier. I'd like to stick to my vague plan of when to go, but the weather is making it hard!

notprincehamlet · 28/04/2024 10:10

Prepped all my running kit last night so all I had to do this morning was roll out of bed and into it ... but I can't bring myself to do it. It's so cold my face hurts. I need a wee too but the thought of that cold loo seat is making it go back in.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 28/04/2024 10:12

It's the mud for me. It's been endless from October until last week. We had a couple of dry warm days and a lot of the mud has dried out now thank god. It rained heavily on Friday but fortunately my run yesterday was ok still. I'm feeling hopeful now, the coast path is runnable again and I think the end of mud season is in sight!

The cold doesn't bother me so much, it needs to be exceptionally bad for me to not wear shorts - I agree the wind has not been fun though, there's been a lot of very windy days.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2024 10:15

I have given up trying to exercise outdoors and bought an exercise bike.

Gallowayan · 28/04/2024 10:16

I thing YABU to take the temperature and climate where you live so personally, to the point of being really upset. I mean this kindly and am not being goady. Ultimately, your feelings are what you make them. They are not controlled by the weather. Where I live its eight degrees and its not raining so to me that's a win.

At the end of the day it is what it is. You either make the best of it or work on how you are going to move elsewhere. Either way, you need to manage the situation so that you can feel better.

fieldsofbutterflies · 28/04/2024 10:17

I'm with you OP. I'm not a runner but I work outside everyday and I am absolutely sick of mud, wind, hail and rain. And yes, before someone comes along and tells me - I know it's April and I know it's normal for the weather to be unpredictable but that doesn't mean I can't moan about it, lol.

I look back on my FB memories and I feel like this is the coldest March/April in a long time. It's barely got into double digits whereas in previous years it was definitely in the mid-high teens.

LoobyDop · 28/04/2024 10:24

YANBU. I sacked it off this morning as well. When I first started I’d go out in all but the very heaviest rain, but I just can’t be arsed, now, I’m so so sick of it. I don’t mind the cold, it’s the wind and rain and mud that’s just soul-sapping. I did a core workout instead which was not in any way equivalent, and now I feel guilty.

I don't think OP is looking for solutions or "ways to manage the situation" - she's just sick of relentless wind, rain and mud and wants to have a moan about it.

Not every complaint requires a solution - it's okay to just have a vent and a whinge :)

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/04/2024 10:33

Oh I get it. I’ve been happily out on runs at 6 am, dodging ice on the pavement, where the only people out are van drivers deicing their windscreens - I don’t mind cold! You usually warm up eventually and come back in glowing and exhilarated.

But this week I went out on one that was so fucking miserable and ploddy, that I never warmed up, never enjoyed it and got back in still freezing and feeling quite down. It’s a different kind of cold. And yes I was dressed appropriately like I have been on every other run. It was just relentless and joyless.

pensione · 28/04/2024 10:35

There’s no such as thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.

When I run in the cold I have my hat/ear band, gloves, run jacket, thermal socks. Sounds like you were not prepared.

gamerchick · 28/04/2024 10:41

Believe it or not the time of year is behaving as normal. A smite warmer. But it has been the darkest and dull in history which makes it feel much colder.

One last frost this weekend and it should warm up after that. Bloody better, I've got babies to plant.

I would agree if the OP was mildly anoyed. But she does sound really down upset. She will just carry on being miserable if she does not change the view she has of her situation.

PhDinaseive · 28/04/2024 10:44

I prefer this cooler weather, do stretches in the house and the run from the front door. I'm warm within 5 minutes and boiling by the time I get home. Can't stand it when it gets above23 I often can't run in the summer because it's too hot

Maaate · 28/04/2024 10:45

Ne'er cast a clout till May be out

And I’m sat here kicking myself, feeling silly because 90% of the time I have this mindset. But this morning I just completely lost it and I thought what the heck am I doing? Cold, uncomfortable and miserable and I just turned around and gave in…
Sometimes I am jealous of people who don’t do a lot. What a simple life it must be to be sat around comfortable eating whatever you want 🤣 I choose hard most of the time - and I know that’s my choice but sometimes i loose it haha

I really hate the weather in this country but you can't live in the UK; want to run; be unable to run in the cold. You have to drop one of them.

I climb, it's very weather dependent and the UK has some of the best rock in the world for climbing you can just hardly ever fucking climb on it so I feel your pain. Also got an Australian passport so could just end this but...
