To book a holiday to Tunisia on my own with 2 kids?

I'm a teacher and my husband is useless at booking time off in the school hols because he "doesn't need to"... anyway I'm sick of this meaning me and the kids usually only end up with a caravan hol in October half term or a few days at his parents house.

He also moans about the price of holidays abroad.

So I thought I'm sick of this and have been looking to just take our children away myself.. I've found a brilliant deal for all inclusive through TUI for £1600.. only catch is it's in Tunisia..,

We would likely just stay in the hotel complex for the week but would I be mad to book? Boys have never been abroad and will be 9 and 7 when we go. Love the idea of surprising them one day in the summer hols saying "and we're off on our hols!".

Honest opinions please! It's next August so advice might change but current foreign office guidance is that it's safe to travel to!

I would do it. I felt very safe in Tunisia with just my friend.

Sugarcoatedalmonds · 27/04/2024 20:16

Hmmmm, that's a hard one. Honestly I think Tunisia would really put me off, I've only been there once as a child and it was very grotty. That said, I really like Lanzerote and loads of people say that about their so, different folks! Could you join the FB group of the hotel to get a feel for it?

From a quick google its 36 degrees in August 😖 I would melt ha.

You are absolutely not being unreasonable to want to go on holiday though!! And i think your kids are at a good age.to do it! Also, I love the idea of.suprising them!

You know, in the time I've written this I've changed my mind 🤣 i think you should go for it! Lifes short!!

Mintchocco · 27/04/2024 20:17

I personally wouldn't because I wouldn't feel able to fully relax anywhere that reads like the official gov travel advice currently does for Tunisia - despite the fact that large part is in green. Doesn't make the most reassuring read so for me it would defeat the object of a holiday as I'd be nervous the whole time

101Nutella · 27/04/2024 20:18

Go on holiday without miserable partner!’
that’s fine. No sure about Tunisia in August though- I’d be too hot!

dcadmamagain · 27/04/2024 20:18

Which hotel?

EatingSleeping · 27/04/2024 20:21

I probably wouldnt. I felt quite vulnerable in Tunisia and although you'd stay in the hotel there is still airport etc. also it would be almost unbearably hot for me. Love the idea of going away. Id maybe go somewhere closer and cheaper. I know people are snobby about resorts like salou and benidorm but if you want a hotel with a pool and a nice beach for kids to paddle there are plenty to be had!

LateAF · 27/04/2024 20:21

I think if it’s your first time abroad with the kids - why not go somewhere easy and already set up for mass British tourism like Spain or Malta? Then build up to more exciting places.

but a huge yes to booking a holiday for you and the kids! You shouldn’t limit yourself and the kids just because your husband isn’t a fan of going away.

ShelfShark · 27/04/2024 20:23

No, I wouldn’t go to Tunisia. There are plenty of other safer options.

Rocknrollstar · 27/04/2024 20:25

Yes go away with the DC - I did it years ago because DH promised to be off and then went to a conference. BUT do not go to Tunisia. The government are now advising certain areas are no longer safe. Think Spain of Canaries.

AppleKatie · 27/04/2024 20:26

No I wouldn’t choose somewhere with such an openly misogynistic culture to take my young children. Also if that 36 deg js right that’s too hot!

Mynewnameis · 27/04/2024 20:27

No way. Pick somewhere else

Solongtoshort · 27/04/2024 20:28

I’ve been twice and enjoyed it, l think l would be fine going there.

Comedycook · 27/04/2024 20:28

I think you should go away with your kids...but I wouldn't go to Tunisia. I've not heard good things to be honest. Agree with a pp about going somewhere like Spain. Majorca or menorca are particularly lovely and nice for families.

I've been there several times on my own and I didn't stay in the hotel all the time. It was fine. One of the trips was in August.

Weighnow · 27/04/2024 20:30

I don't think I'd go to Tunisia as a lone woman. I went as a teenager with my parents and the way we girls were treated is the angriest I've ever seen my Dad.

Banana34 · 27/04/2024 20:30

We went last summer and felt completely safe. I will warn you though - it’s hot! Had sweat running down my legs just walking to the bar! Was nice though (till my partner ended up in hospital with a broken hip… but that could happen anywhere!!)

PonyPatter44 · 27/04/2024 20:33

I'd go for it if i was you. I really wish I'd done things like this with DD when she was little and my exH refused to go anywhere. Tunisia can be a bit dodgy in places, but then so can anywhere.

SoItGoes221 · 27/04/2024 20:35

I went with my husband a few years ago.
If you stay in a good quality hotel I don't see why not. We stayed in a 3 star and the all inclusive food was very average. The rooms and the resort were beautiful.

However, and again, this could happen in lots of places, I did get horrific food poisoning in our last night there. I was so ill we couldn't fly home. So make sure you're sensible about what you eat and drink there.

Clearinguptheclutter · 27/04/2024 20:35

Not Tunisia no. That sounds way too hot. Go to Spain or Portugal.

Mammyloveswine · 27/04/2024 20:36

Hotel is Marhaba Beach Hotel in Sousse if that helps!

I've been to Tunisia on my own with DS, was absolutely fine. We stayed mostly in the resort, no issues.

The unsafe areas named are nowhere near the tourist areas.

Chasingthewilddeer · 27/04/2024 20:38

Been to Tunisia and didn't like it as people were constantly trying to get money from you.

Mammyloveswine · 27/04/2024 20:38

Thanks for all replies!

All Spanish resorts are at least £500 more for really basic hotels..

You'll be absolutely fine in a resort, go for it.
