To book a holiday to Tunisia on my own with 2 kids?

I'm a teacher and my husband is useless at booking time off in the school hols because he "doesn't need to"... anyway I'm sick of this meaning me and the kids usually only end up with a caravan hol in October half term or a few days at his parents house.

He also moans about the price of holidays abroad.

So I thought I'm sick of this and have been looking to just take our children away myself.. I've found a brilliant deal for all inclusive through TUI for £1600.. only catch is it's in Tunisia..,

We would likely just stay in the hotel complex for the week but would I be mad to book? Boys have never been abroad and will be 9 and 7 when we go. Love the idea of surprising them one day in the summer hols saying "and we're off on our hols!".

Honest opinions please! It's next August so advice might change but current foreign office guidance is that it's safe to travel to!

Money supermarket are advising you upgrade your holiday insurance to include terrorism cover:

  • Terrorism: Consider adding terrorism cover, which can provide peace of mind given recent incidents of terrorism in Tunisia. This is not usually covered as standard and may be offered as an additional option.

worth it for peace of mind, I would say.

I'm not sure insurance will protect you from terrorism. Obviously better to have it than not if you did find yourself mixed up in something, but insurance isn't going to make everything OK.

Gogogowall · 28/04/2024 07:33

I probably wouldn’t as I like to go out and about but if you are happy to stay in the resort then I would.

mitogoshi · 28/04/2024 08:04

Personally I would not book Tunisia at the moment as things are quite up and down. Instead I would put the money away gradually into a separate account and book short notice where you should get a better deal and potentially grab a trip to Spain perhaps which would be simpler as a first trip away. Do make sure you process passports before you book if it's short notice and buy travel insurance the same day you book.

Pip1402 · 28/04/2024 08:25

@Mammyloveswine it was around 30 years ago so I guess things could have changed. And you're right, men can be disgustingly lecherous the world over. I hope you have a wonderful time!

BurbageBrook · 28/04/2024 08:26

NBU to go on holiday but I would try to find somewhere else other than Tunisia in August even if you have to book flights hotel etc yourself. I think two weeks is a LONG time to be in an all inclusive hotel too and might get pretty boring. I'd rather take them somewhere for a week or ten days where I could actually go out and feel safe wandering around. Maybe a less popular area of Spain or Croatia.

Come back and let us know how it was!

Mammyloveswine · 28/04/2024 09:05

Thanks everyone! Will upgrade travel insurance to cover us should we need to cancel due to the situation!

Sorry I missed your update. Good luck with the holiday!

Pippa246 · 28/04/2024 09:08

It’s gonna be warm, it’s got a pool and if it’s got ice cream on tap the DC will LOVE it…. Do it!!!

Kitkat1523 · 28/04/2024 09:09

I would never go to Tunisia without children….would no way take children there…..I always remember that shooting a few years ago on the beach in sousse…..all those tourists shot…..it has stayed with me….and put me off the place for good

Sharptonguedwoman · 28/04/2024 09:11

Go! It will be warm and sunny and your boys will be in the pool all the time, make friends etc. Offer it to your DH/DP, if he doesn't go, it's on him.

Would you never go to London, Manchester, New York either?

Kitkat1523 · 28/04/2024 09:18

I been to all those places…..but some things just stay in a persons head….and for me that’s the Tunisia beach shooting…. 🤷‍♀️

yeriav · 28/04/2024 09:19

@Mammyloveswine malta is reasonable and great with kids, loads of beaches, boat trips, places to eat and it’s safer than Tunisia. I’d definitely go with the two kids though, they’re old enough to enjoy and you’ll get a change of scenery. Leave the miserable sod at home!

Fair enough, I guess I just find it odd when people are stuck on one incident from 10 years ago as a reason not to visit somewhere, you're more likely to be shot by a terrorist in the UK at the moment to be honest.

I expect I would find something ‘odd’ about you too🙄

Amx · 28/04/2024 10:01

No chance in hell. Travel agent of 20 years here.

It's cheap for a good reason.

Growlybear83 · 28/04/2024 10:22

I e been to Tunisia many times and have travelled around extensively, with just my husband and then later with our daughter and I've always felt very very safe. Tunisian food is wonderful outside the hotel complexes and Tunisian people are warm and friendly. It wouldn't worry me at all travelling there on my own with children. Although it will be very hot in August, the heat is much dryer than most of Europe and I find it much easier to cope with 40 degrees in North Africa than 30 degrees in Greece for example.

Exactly. By that reckoning, no one should visit the UK too.

WhiskersPete · 28/04/2024 10:27

Is it TUI Magic Life? We went there with DC and it was perfectly safe. You won't need to leave the hotel as there is so much to do for kids etc.

@Mammyloveswine , I've been to Tunisia a few times. and loved it. I didn't get hassled or food poisoning.
I loved the food and went on a few trips.

I stayed in Sousse once but it wasn't my best Tunisian holiday. Djerba was the best one.

I agree with you that Djerba is much nicer than souse and hammamet. The nicest place we've stayed was just outside Zarzis and it was paradise.

123anotherday · 28/04/2024 10:29

Also just checking you are white as if you are black you might not get a good response from locals.

Snoopystick · 28/04/2024 10:30

It’s the only country I’ve been to that I would never go back to. Both myself and my friend (male) were groped in separate incidents. Did not feel safe other than in the hotel grounds.

zingally · 28/04/2024 10:32

I'd definitely go on hols!

Not sure about Tunisia though... It's not very "white-woman-friendly", and you'd definitely be "stuck" in the resort.

VivaVivaa · 28/04/2024 10:34

Tunisia will be unbearably hot in August. If your boys haven’t been abroad before and experienced that degree of heat, I’d personally chose somewhere else. You should absolutely go abroad if you can though!
