Neighbours oxygen tank

Tevion1213 · 27/04/2024 17:37

I'm not one to complain and I am usually tolerant but the distinct popping noise from upstairs neighbours oxygen tank is irritating me so much. They are on 17 hours of oxygen so it's going all through the night. I know it's a medical need and don't know how to deal with this.
Its 3 pops followed by a final louder one and it's constant. Anybody please

I've never heard a popping sound, I'd speak to the delivery driver to make sure its working properly.

Maddy70 · 27/04/2024 18:03

People are being harsh here. She knows the neighbour cant help it. But that does not stop it being bloody awful having your sleep disturbed

Op could you sleep in a different bedroom?

Tevion1213 · 27/04/2024 18:05

Sadperson1 · 27/04/2024 18:00

Wow, This ⬆️.
My partner was on 24hr oxygen aswell. I didn’t sleep and had very young children to care for as well as caring for him. Have some empathy and buy some earplugs/use white noise/listen to audiobooks etc.
Honestly, your comments put me in mind of the parent who asked me to tell my 5 yr old to stop mentioning her dad dying as it was upsetting their daughter!!

I haven't gone around there sounding off you know im not the devil

It sounds awful

Yellowhammer09 · 27/04/2024 18:07

I'd have a nice chat with his wife. I'm not really sure how they work but if it's on a hard floor then I guess it'll travel to you?

Servicing and acoustic treatment sounds like a reasonable thing to say, especially as it is affecting your sleep, which is unfair if there is something that could be done.

I have another room but no bed not sure if I'd escape the noise in there.
I have problems getting to sleep anyway suffer from extreme agitation restlessness am on medication for that but never expected to be bothered by this noise so much

Maybe it's the breathing mask that's clicking if it's cpap or bipap rather than the concentrator

crimsontyphoon · 27/04/2024 18:09

White noise machine, even without any specific annoying sound if you're autistic and have sensitive hearing they are life changing

takemeawayagain · 27/04/2024 18:09

Some real sanctimonious twats on this thread, the OP said she understood it was needed medically. She obviously isn't expecting the person not to have their oxygen.
That constant noise would drive me mad too OP. You could try some loop earplugs.

TheWonderhorse · 27/04/2024 18:09

The poor neighbours have to hear it too. I wouldn't say anything personally, and in the evening I'd mask it with the TV and overnight get ear plugs.

Does it freak you out a bit OP? I could understand that, and I find medical machinery a bit unnerving sometimes, and can imagine it maybe playing on my mind if I woke in the night.

TonTonMacoute · 27/04/2024 18:11

Sorry, but this is just one of those things.

You have to make your mind up that it’s not going to irritate you, find something to mask it until stops bothering you.

At the moment you are listening out for this noise but in time your brain learns to filter out the noise and you stop noticing it.

Tevion1213 · 27/04/2024 18:12

I've lived with fish tank noise a humidifier but something about this noise sets me off

You said your neighbour has been on oxygen for a while, but now it’s for most of the day. Have you been aware of the popping noise before now, or is it a new thing? It’s possible to both really feel for someone’s ill health and suffering, and to also be driven up the wall by the noise of a piece of their essential equipment.

If you’ve not heard this particular sound before, I’d see if you can carch the delivery guy or a visiting HCp, and ask if they either know if this is usual and if not, who you can contact to see if the equipment can be checked/adjusted/changed.

If there’s nothing to be done and this is a normal sound, then I agree all you can do is wear earplugs, play white-noise etc. What a sad and difficult situation. All the usual advice for neighbour noise, doesn’t apply in this case. I hope you find something to help and hope your poor neighbour is doing as well as they can

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 27/04/2024 18:17

My DM was on oxygen at home for the last 9 months of her life. There was a very slight hiss (or maybe more of a whirr) if you listened really carefully. But other than that nothing at all. And you could only hear it if the house was otherwise quiet. So I do wonder if there is something amiss here, something not being maintained correctly.

My advice as to what you do depends I think on whether your neighbour is terminally ill or has a long standing chronic condition. If the former I really would not say anything at all. I do not think there is any way you could frame your approach that would go over well. Ear plugs is the way to go. There are some good ones out there.

If your neighbour has a chronic, long term condition, I can, just about see that you might be able to broach the subject on the basis of could the oxygen be put on some padding, are they sure it’s working properly? It would still be a very difficult conversation though.

Are you a generally good neighbour? That might make a difference to how any approach is received.

TheTartfulLodger · 27/04/2024 18:18

My mum had an oxygen machine at the end. It shouldn't be making all that noise.

betterangels · 27/04/2024 18:19

It's likely keeping them alive, so you should get over yourself. I'm sure they're not having the best time.

Mynewnameis · 27/04/2024 18:20

I'm very noise sensitive and macks silicone earplugs are the best I've tried and comfortable

Barleycat · 27/04/2024 18:22

Yanbu it would drive me mad too. I have a white noise maker from amazon, its brilliant and very small and portable. You should try something similar.

I am pleased that you haven’t, I guess the subject is quite close to my heart, it can be incredibly hard for the person on oxygen and the family caring for them. The post just seemed to lack empathy. Lots of people have given you good pointers on how to manage your own sleep, I hope that they help.

flapjackfairy · 27/04/2024 18:24

my son uses an oxygen concentrator at night and yes it is noisy so.i get what you are saying. We put his outside his room on the landing and I wear ear plugs and keep the door shut. I couldn't sleep otherwise tbh as they make a series of hisses and clunk's On the plus side they belt out the heat so are great for drying the washing . Every cloud and all that .

Healingfrommothernarc · 27/04/2024 18:27

I listen fo 432hz music or sleep music on YouTube through headphones, when my neighbours are loud and I'm trying to sleep. Hope this helps xxx

Agree. I was probably harsh too, but seeing someone you love struggling for breath. It will just never leave me.

StormingNorman · 27/04/2024 18:32

I’m not a cow and feel for the person who needs oxygen. OMFG though! That noise has got to be some kind of torture.

It is a housing problem. Flats should be better soundproofed. Nobody wants to hear their neighbours.

Can you not have it downstairs and piped up? We have ours in the hallway so there's always a door between us and it 🤣
