Neighbours oxygen tank

Tevion1213 · 27/04/2024 17:37

I'm not one to complain and I am usually tolerant but the distinct popping noise from upstairs neighbours oxygen tank is irritating me so much. They are on 17 hours of oxygen so it's going all through the night. I know it's a medical need and don't know how to deal with this.
Its 3 pops followed by a final louder one and it's constant. Anybody please

Ear plugs. Fans. White noise.

ShalommJackie · 27/04/2024 17:46

How can you hear it? Are the walls made of Cardboard?

bringmorewashing · 27/04/2024 17:46

That would drive anyone up the wall. Get some good earplugs, and a fan might help as well.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/04/2024 17:46

I've never known an oxygen machine to make such loud noise that it's audible from next door, ours is a low hum and DS won't have the machine in his room but what you're describing sounds like it's constantly making banging noises.

Is it a single person? Might need servicing? Do you think if the machine wasn't functioning properly that they'd be able to report it themselves?

Actually OP I think you are getting a really hard time here and that’s unfair- you’re allowed to be irritated by a noise and especially for 17 hours ! It doesn’t make you a bad person it’s not like you’ve gone and had a go at your neighbour!

Perhaps we could offer some ideas for OP rather than having a go ? For all
we know OP could have sensory issues around repetitive noises or a condition where disturbed sleep makes it worse?

Have you tried earplugs or some white noise? Or could you change rooms around if that’s possible Flowers

I did wonder if my adhd/ asd may be making it difficult tbh

The sound proofing is awful in this flat it's built like a house with them upstairs

Sympathy OP, ignore the horrible pretend caring people in this thread. I would have problems with the noise as well. Try noise cancelling headphones

noctilucentcloud · 27/04/2024 17:48

I can see how noise disrupting your sleep is difficult, but I think it'd be unreasonable to say anything. However, you could try ear plugs (ones that block sound or ones that reduce noise eg for those sensitive to sound), white noise machine, fan, listening to the radio / audio book / soothing music as you go to sleep (which you can set to switch off after a certain amount of time), turning around in your bed so your head is normally where your feet are (if that means you're further from the wall), or if you are lucky enough to have the option sleeping in a different room.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/04/2024 17:49

Oh actually our holiday O2 machine can make a kind of chuffing noise. I always think it sounds like it's huffing and puffing. Not a popping sound though. I wonder if they've put it in a different room so they can't hear it? But you must have really bad soundproofing if you can hear that noise.

I guess you could try grabbing the O2 guy next time they visit and explaining the noise is coming through, you obviously don't want to tell the neighbour (although id have no objection to a polite conversation about it) and are they able to assist in anyway by checking the machine?

quizzys · 27/04/2024 17:50

Could you get earphones and listen to podcasts/music whatever on your phone/tablet.?

That's what I do to help me sleep and I haven't managed to get through one 30 minute episode of anything as I conk out. In fact an ambulance arrived for a neighbour over the road in the night recently, it came up the road on blues and twos (so another neighbour told me), and I never heard a thing.

I know it's not the same thing, as I don't have to listen to a similar noise as you, but it might be worth a try anyway.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 27/04/2024 17:51

Not sure why you're getting a hard time OP, considering MN will be full of moaners in a couple of months, because people are daring to enjoy their gardens in the middle of the day but the noise will be 'unbearable' 🙄

I can't offer any suggestions other than earplugs I'm afraid.

It's a horrible situation and obviously not one that can be helped by the person needing their oxygen, but that doesn't make the noise any less stressful.

Tevion1213 · 27/04/2024 17:54

Some very kind replies on here and I have thought about my poor neighbour having to put up with a mask stuck on his face and I wouldn't want anything to happen to them. I just wondered if the tank needs a more stable Base or position adjusting etc but hey I will definitely try earplugs as suggested.

It's like I'm highly sensitive and the noise is bringing it out probably more my problem to try and deal with it

Invest in some sound proofing

Op has he got anyone in with him regularly? Genuinely it sounds like it needs a service. How long has it sounded like that? Do you know if he has portable canisters delivered? You could try nabbing the driver?

PuppetQueen · 27/04/2024 17:56

I'd hate this too, OP! It's obviously not the patient's fault, but equally it must be intolerable to have to listen to a repetitive sound for 17 hours a day. White noise or noise-cancelling headphones will hopefully help matters.

Rental property and I can't afford to do anything at the moment.

I understand OP. Sometimes a noise gets into your head and drives you batshit.

Unfortunately the only thing you can do is either block it out with earplugs etc, or move bedrooms.

Zanatdy · 27/04/2024 17:58

Oh come on, what on Earth do you expect they do? The guy can’t breathe

Yes his wife and I think I've seen a van deliver oxygen

He has been on oxygen for some time even before this noise started but maybe not 17 hrs a day.

My tiny baby son was on 24hour a day o2 at home… if my neighbours had said anything to me about the noise the normally v polite kind me would have told them to Fuck off

Wow, This ⬆️.
My partner was on 24hr oxygen aswell. I didn’t sleep and had very young children to care for as well as caring for him. Have some empathy and buy some earplugs/use white noise/listen to audiobooks etc.
Honestly, your comments put me in mind of the parent who asked me to tell my 5 yr old to stop mentioning her dad dying as it was upsetting their daughter!!

TheOccupier · 27/04/2024 18:00

I thought this was going to be a thread about a fire risk... anyway, these are good earplugs and very cheap:

If you google noisy oxygen machine you will find lots of advice on this - I don't think you can raise it with your neighbour if you don't already know them well but perhaps you'll run into their carer/nurse in the hall? Then I think it would be OK just to say that you can hear the machine clearly and you're wondering if it's working OK.

Not sure why you’re getting such a hard time OP. The fact of the matter is the is constant sounds from a neighbour impacting sleep and life. The fact it’s life saving noise doesn’t mean it’s not disruptive. Sounds like OP was looking for advice on how to manage since she knows it would be unreasonable to talk to neighbour. All very fair.

I completely agree!! OP wasn't suggesting they turn it off, they presumably just need a way to minimise the impact on their life.

Tevion1213 · 27/04/2024 18:03

I'm listening to it now pop pop pop 😫
