Baby Reindeer creator is provoking his stalker

jengachampion · 26/04/2024 10:02

SPOILERS AHEAD
I’ll preface this by saying I had a male stalker for 7 years. I moved, changed jobs, and deleted all social media in that time. I’m also a survivor of SA, as well as assault after being spiked, similar to RG in the show.

It completely baffles me that he would completely replicate his stalker down to physical likeness, occupation, accent, exact correspondences and references like hanging curtains.

He is clearly not too worried about people finding the real person, as well as her potentially contacting him again.

If it were me telling my story, I would change all identifying details of both of us, because I would NEVER want to go through it again. RG telling his story this way is hugely weird to me and really speaks to the theme of mutual obsession he hints at in the show.

'Also, why on earth did he keep trying to be a comedian when he clearly didn't have the talent for it?!'

I think he realised that during the final of the comedy when no one laughed that Darrien had misled him into thinking he did have talent for it. It was only then that he realised he didn't. But his monologue video went viral and he realised then where his talents lay I guess? So kept with it but changed the content.

‘It’s his story. He can tell it if he wants to 🤷‍♀️’

Im going to keep an eye out for ‘Martha’s Story’ later this year

Her version would be:
She did not stalk DD, she was simply engaged in local politics
She did not stalk her employer/the other MP, she simply wanted to talk about how she was unfairly treated left three different firms
She did not stalk Richard, it was the other way round
Two restraining orders suggest otherwise but the constant vitriol/strong sense of injustice and right-wing views seem to cloud her thinking.

I assume you mean his fictional counterpart. In real life, although he finds doing straight forward stand-up slots on the comedy circuit hard, his actual shows have been relatively successful then acclaimed, albeit niche/not for everyone. I think he started performing at the Fringe from 2009.

Cheese and crack whores 2013 (co-?) directed by Gary Reich (who co-directed Uncle David - Wikipedia ) (sleeper hit)
Breaking Gadd 2014
Waiting for Gaddot 2015 (underground hit/won awards)
Monkey see, monkey do 2016 (won the fringe festival, highest accolade)
Baby Reindeer 2019 (won an Olivier award)
He was stalked between 2015-17/18 depending on the source you read, another source says six years for police to act.

She is clearly a very mentally unwell woman. What she did is inexcusable, but does she deserve death threats?

Yeah I think you're right. We don't need to hear from her, or indeed bother with courts anymore. Let's just stick to trial by Netflix and social media. We should also reinstate the village stocks and start pelting people with rotten vegetables if anyone we know (or even don't know) says someone else is a wanker.

It's awful isn't it. No matter how bad her behaviour was and I'm in no way minimising it, she is clearly mentally unwell. Why tf would he want to shine the spotlight on her and drag the whole sorry mess onto Netflix as entertainment.

SallyWD · 27/04/2024 17:12

TheShellBeach · 27/04/2024 12:43

I never felt sorry for him.
He didn't tell the police anything for ages, and even when he did, he omitted to tell them everything.

So do you also not feel sorry for female victims of rape or stalking if they don't report it immediately?

He’s reposted someone comparing her to heather trotter with laughing emojis. This whole thing is a mess.

He did not report the rape at all.

When he reported the stalking, he neglected to mention the violent attacks and he failed to point out that he had googled Martha and discovered previous convictions.

I haven't seen further than ep 4 but did he mention to the police that he had followed her home and spied on her?

I bet we will see a Fuck Off Baby Reindeer Martha's Story coming soon to Netflix..

He didn't mention that, no.

You could be right about the follow-up series.

Really? I mean if I had a mad stalker and was traumatised by the situation I certainly wouldn't be following him home and peer through his windows, as surely that could be interpreted by the stalker as being interested. Of course to say so these days is victim blaming.

Yes but lots of female victims don't report all the details (or report crimes against them at all). There are many different reasons for this. I don't think it means we shouldn't have sympathy for them.

Quite.
And that's why some people are saying he is as bad as she.

You'll see for yourself when you watch it till the end.

Who though? I like a bit of dry, alternative comedy but his glittery leotard and my 'mum died' erm, jokes just all soo lame and pathetic.

I suppose his 'schtick' is the cringe factor, but he just gives off such a desperate vibe ive no idea what awards anyone would give him and if he did infact win awards why have none of us heard of him until his one sided tale of a stalker and other weird stuff on Netflix?!

Let's try that again for fairness. Her words:

  1. The Neil Sears article in the Mail did not use any of her interview and she has sent a letter before action
  2. The daily record article was fair
  3. The Mail article was not with her cooperation/approval
  4. She worked for an ex employer for two weeks
  5. She was headhunted from another firm because she had labour law experience and the employer had sacked employees/was not coping after inheriting the company
  6. She bears her no ill will and walked
  7. She did go for the First Minister's safe seat and was slurred in articles to spoil her chances/she'd be out of contention
  8. She made no report to social services
  9. Her side of the story has not been told
  10. Believes the Labour party was corrupt and incompetent in passing a private letter regarding her selection to another MP (her ex employer's husband)
  11. Lawyers will also write to Robert Collins of The Sun for naming her

I fully agree with this.

When we watched this, DH and I were cringing at the supposed comedy. It wasn't even improved after the Tim Goodman-Hill character had tweaked it.
Hmm

I am, too.

I don't think that's odd, after the Netflix series.

It has clearly sparked a lot of interest in the real Martha.
