I genuinely tried so hard to watch this but I am physically unable to. It is absolutely unbelievable.

It is horrifying and heartbreaking that animals are going through this in order for humans to be able to eat meat, eggs and dairy.

To anyone who eats these things, this is where it comes from.

Throw in low FODMAP and then it would be an almighty challenge.

That is too cruel...

Summerpussy · 23/04/2024 15:58

If slaughter houses had glass walls
I'd like to think people would care ,but the reality is ,they probably wouldn't

Aykarumba · 23/04/2024 16:02

I just simply cannot get worked up about it.

I've watched the video, and whilst I agree it isn't nice, I also don't actually see anything wrong with it. I feel that the way animals are treated in the 6m - 2years before they're killed is much more important than the killing process.

Realistically our population is just too large to have anything less than industrial scale meat production. Our population is too large, and our geography and climate incorrect, for us all to be vegan.

Aykarumba · 23/04/2024 16:04

What I will say, is I think that bleeding slaughter (i.e. kosher or non-stun halal) is actually far more human due to the speed it's done at.

And I think people who disagree have never actually seen slaughter up close!

I went vegan for a month once last year i was so ill i had migraines almost daily.
Upset belly sat on the loo 5-6 times a day disgusting😩tired and hungry depressed i felt really sad as well and im a happy person.
It cost me more money than i thought it would.
I was just not my self by week 3.
I didnt lose weight i was bloated and no energy and aches.
A family member said stick with it you have to get used to it (fuck you was my words)
Went to my GP who said stop it.
Im now back to me.

However side rant i saw a strict vegan woman on youtube the other night that said she cannot and will not de-lice her childs head because they are animals.
And she will not hurt them.🙄
Will try and find link to upload shes barking mad.

Utterly ridiculous. You actually believe all vegans are unhealthy 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 you just ate badly. A month 🤣

I'm out of this thread because I get bored of reading the same old shit . Enjoy your health all, if you can.

I got told the same thing by someone when Quorn gave us all bad bellies and the squits. 'just stick at it, you'll get used " I don't want to have to get used to something that puts me on the bog multiple times like.

theeyeofdoe · 23/04/2024 16:15

You do realise that this (obviously) comes from a completely biased source.
I hop that you don't take everything that you see on the internet at face value.

None of the 20 or so farms I've ever visited have been anything like this.

Humans are omnivores and need to eat a variety of foods groups to obtain the nutrients that need to stay healthy.

RadoxMoon · 23/04/2024 15:51

Aren’t you then just getting to the BRAT diet, but with GF toast?

Nah
We could start with a Mediterranean theme:

Polenta chunky fries with a tomato sauce.
Roasted aubergine and tempeh in a pomegranate molasses marinade with a wee bit of tahini sauce and sprinkled pomegranate seeds.
Grainy salad of buckwheat, quinoa, cucumber, olives, parsley and a few pine nuts.
Green salad.

I'm not disagreeing with you about Quorn, but I don't think that not wanting gett used to something that makes you go to the loo a lot is a good basis for diet control! Lots of people have never eaten much in the way if fibre, lentils etc and most diet changes cause toilet changes that you do get used to after a while. I doubt anyone will say people shouldn't keep eating increased fruit and veg just because it makes them poo a lot in the begining.

You know the stunning should be instant and the bleeding done immediately alfterwards, yes?

If I had to choose between being carefully shot in the head and then my throat cut, or just having my throat cut, I know which I’d choose.

Until recently, I was one of those evil slaughterhouse workers. Those working with the live animals were excellent and the system was as humane as it could be. It wasn’t in the UK though, so I can’t compare.

Chickens are kept in large barns and they can run around. I know because I’ve been in quite a few. Not sure I’d call them happy barns, but the chickens do usually have different levels to perch on and often things like straw to play with.

Animal welfare on farms in the UK isn’t perfect, but the vast majority is good as farmers who don’t look after their animals tend to go out of business.

GoonieGang · 23/04/2024 17:00

When I have to kill it myself then i will become vegetarian. Until then I will happily and ignorantly eat continue to eat meat.

wibblywobblywoo · 23/04/2024 17:10

maddening · 23/04/2024 14:36

It is fine to continue to eat meat - but surely we should all demand that those that rear and kill these animals do so as humanely as possible.

Good luck with getting Halal slaughter changed so that's it's humane, it should be of course but will it happen, i doubt it very much.

The RSPCA (amongst many others) would strongly dispute that -

Ban Non-stun Slaughter | Campaign | RSPCA - RSPCA - rspca.org.uk

The practice of non-stunned slaughter results in millions of farm animals suffering before death. Join our campaign to end non-stunned slaughter in the UK.

IamFamousIam · 23/04/2024 17:18

Yes there are some terrible farmers but that doesn’t mean the rest aren’t out there maintaining the highest welfare standards.

Farming is an easy target to blame for climate change.

Good luck surviving on trees because that is what is happing to agricultural land in Britain so that other industries can spew out as much carbon as they like and claim they have off set it. See also celebs flying all over the world to preach to us about the environment. We will have to import more food and then what happens when waring nations block the supply routes?

Good luck growing coconuts, avocados and almonds in the uk.

But it’s okay it’s kick the farmers when they are down day.

Yet when people go keto/low carb feeling crap initially is viewed as a positive thing as a sign it’s working and your body is adjusting. You have to stick with it despite headaches/feeling crap/bad breath.

what’s losing weight got to do with it?

The key word being "should". But it often isn't. I eat meat and I don't have a religious affiliation with any type of slaughter and I have farmed and slaughtered animals.

Once animals get in queue for slaughter, if the stunner stops working, or isn't working reliably the animals are still slaughtered. If an animal wakes up in the queue because it's moving too slowly, another animal has slowed it down or whatever, then they aren't restunned.

My issue with prestun slaughter is that's inconsistent and stunning can be used as an excuse for sloppy slaughter practices.

I also don't hold the RSPCA up as any kind of bastion of animal welfare to be honest, having done work for them.

They get annoyed at non-vegans posting in threads on the vegan board, but then spam the general boards with their ideology.

SeanBeansMealDeal · 24/04/2024 02:26

LadySugar · 23/04/2024 15:21

With respect, no, chickens aren't kept In a big happy barn where they run around. And no, unlike with parents loving their children, there is zero (0) incentive for a chicken nugget factory to treat animals well.

No, I'm not a vegan but dismissing and choosing to be ignorant of animal welfare is wrong

Just because a great many aren't, that doesn't mean that none of them are kept humanely and given space to roam. Lots of people have a half-dozen, dozen or so hens in their gardens and enjoy the eggs - that they lay regardless and which would otherwise just be left to to rot - but also manage to treat the hens well and compassionately, often like pets. Even if they wanted to, what would be the point in having a cruel battery cage set-up for only 10 or so birds?

I'm sure there are also bigger-scale producers that care about their animals' welfare too. I know it's the stereotypical vegan claim that you're either a vegan or otherwise a morally-bankrupt, totally evil person/company - with no possible in-between. Most things in life are not black or white, with no nuance whatsoever.

Noyesnoyes · 24/04/2024 03:13

Meadowfinch · 23/04/2024 13:58

You'll have to be more specific.

I eat eggs, meat and dairy. I live in a house on a dairy farm and the farm manager spend more time tending to his prize friesians that he spends with his dcs. 🙂

Eggs come from next door - very free range. Lamb comes from the man who cuts my hair (and keeps sheep).

So maybe you can explain what the issue is. Without generalising.

Edited

Does the man use the sheep shearers for both of you......

Sorry couldn't resist!

Vegetus · 24/04/2024 04:46

SerenChocolateMuncher · 23/04/2024 14:38

I doubt "rotting flesh" tastes nice, but I couldn't say for sure, because I've never tried it. On the other hand I know for certain that vegan shite tastes awful, because I have tried it and it's disgusting.

What? like vegetables?

Meadowfinch · 24/04/2024 08:37

@LadySugar

Err, actually my friend's 800 chickens ARE kept in a big chicken shed with sufficient roosts, not cramped and with open access to a 14 acre field, carefully planted with a mixed species copse to provide shade in summer, and plenty of open ground so they can dig dust and rid themselves of mites.

Well fed & watered, then locked in every night to keep them safe from predators.

But hey, why let your sweeping generalisations get in the way of the truth? 🙄

Misthios · 24/04/2024 08:43

Urgh, more preachy vegans.

I could quite happily be pescetarian, vegetarian more of a challenge as I don't eat cheese because of the saturated fats. Would never ever consider an entirely vegan diet.

Preachy vegans turn people off with their all or nothing approach. For the sake of the planet, something like one or two meat-free days a week is achievable for most people and realistic. Demanding people who have eaten an omnivorous diet for 30 or 40 years suddenly given up all meat, dairy and eggs is hugely unrealistic and preachy.
