Help DH won't wear speedos but going to France!

Taking DCs to Disney land Paris in May. DH has severe body dysmorphia and getting clothes that he will wear is a nightmare as he genuinely hates the way he looks (there's absolutely nothing wrong with the way he looks but it's not as easy as just telling him that!)

So I've recently found out about the law in France about all men and boys having to wear speedos when swimming. We aren't staying at Disney we are staying at the centre parks so we definitely plan on going swimming. He's point blank refusing to wear them which I do completely understand as he will worry about it every hour until we go. However if he doesn't go then non of us can go in as Dc are small and can't swim without help and I can't help both on my own. Is there a speedo alternative that's a bit more body forgiving that I could suggest to him?

Would he wear jammers, which are like cycling shorts? Still tight but cover more.

JuvenileBigfoot · 21/04/2024 20:54

What...!? How can that be a law!?

Seashor · 21/04/2024 20:54

Everyone will be wearing them, he honestly needs to get over it. Harsh but true.

Utini · 21/04/2024 20:55

We stayed at centre parcs near Paris a couple of years ago and DP wore normal swimming trunks. No one said anything.

Clearinguptheclutter · 21/04/2024 20:55

Are you staying at villages nature? We are too but early June.

We’ve come across this rule in France before and my dh was “no way” but in fact it was all fine, choice of swimwear was not at all enforced

following, anyway!

letitgoletitgo6 · 21/04/2024 20:55

@Waffleson I will have a look at those thank you!

@JuvenileBigfoot I genuinely thought someone was having me on when they told me but it really is a law and apparently they are very strict on it!

Jammers - long like cycling shorts.
the rules in France are that they need to be tight and Lycra but they don’t need to be tiny. My dh wears jammers and he wears his baggy board shorts on top down to poolside and only takes them off last minute.

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 21/04/2024 20:55

Might be able to get away with Daniel Craig style tight shorts.

But ultimately if he feels that shit about his body, he's not going to get into any swimwear is he? You will have to take the kids into the water one at a time and he will have to entertain/console the one who has to sit out.

Its not a law, its policy in a lot of places in France

lavenderlou · 21/04/2024 20:56

He may not actually have to wear tight trunks (they are supposed to be close fitting but don't have to be speeedos). I've stayed at loads of French campsites and the majority have not had any rules about trunks in the pool. If it is essential, how about some sort if surfwear?

museumum · 21/04/2024 20:57

You’ll often get away with shorter baggies at a holiday park but it’s strictly enforced at municipal pools.

letitgoletitgo6 · 21/04/2024 20:57

@Seashor you obviously don't understand what it's like for someone with a severe mental illness.

@CaptainCarrotsBigSword he's normally ok with other swim shorts as he will wear a tshirt as well. It takes about an hour to get him in them though as he has to constantly confirm with me that he's not fat etc

Check with the venue - not all follow these rules, especially those who want international tourism. Some allow trunks.

Mandarinaduck · 21/04/2024 20:57

Agree that the longer Lycra swimming shorts should be ok, it does t have to be the classic small speedos.

letitgoletitgo6 · 21/04/2024 20:58

Thanks everyone looks like it may not be enforced as strictly at the centre parcs so we will take a pair just incase but take his normal shorts too and hope he gets away with it!

That’s a pubic swimming baths rule. Not at resorts filled with Brits.

Dumbledumb · 21/04/2024 20:59

I stayed at Villages des Natures last year and hardly anyone was wearing speedos so you shouldn't have a problem.
I seem to recall readiing the rule is more likely to be enforced in campsites.

I doubt he will be allowed to wear a t shirt in the pool. The whole point of the Speedo rule is the tight fittedness of it all.

BusyCM · 21/04/2024 20:59

Does anyone know why they have this rule?

PeatandDieselfan · 21/04/2024 20:59

Yeah, it just means swimming shorts not baggy boardies/ bermuda shorts down to the knees that he might have been walking around in all day. It's a hygiene thing to make sure everyone uses dedicated swimwear.

cansu · 21/04/2024 21:00

They don't have to be speedos but some places won't allow swim shorts. Just take both with you.

JovialNickname · 21/04/2024 21:00

WHY is this a rule? What's the reasoning behind it please, does anyone know!

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 21/04/2024 21:00

I’ve only seen it enforced in municipal type pools. Never had an issue in Center parcs or more touristy type campsites in France. I doubt it will be an issue.
