Help DH won't wear speedos but going to France!

Taking DCs to Disney land Paris in May. DH has severe body dysmorphia and getting clothes that he will wear is a nightmare as he genuinely hates the way he looks (there's absolutely nothing wrong with the way he looks but it's not as easy as just telling him that!)

So I've recently found out about the law in France about all men and boys having to wear speedos when swimming. We aren't staying at Disney we are staying at the centre parks so we definitely plan on going swimming. He's point blank refusing to wear them which I do completely understand as he will worry about it every hour until we go. However if he doesn't go then non of us can go in as Dc are small and can't swim without help and I can't help both on my own. Is there a speedo alternative that's a bit more body forgiving that I could suggest to him?

Just as a matter of interest, for those places also insisting on swimming caps, is that for bald men too?

ToxicChristmas · 21/04/2024 22:23

Must be very site specific as we've been to France countless times (including Disney) and DH has never been booted out of any pool for wearing swim shorts. Nobody has even given a second glance as far as I've noticed.

KnittedCardi · 21/04/2024 22:24

I think it's a great idea. British pools are consistently revolting. No rules on clothing, or showering before you go in, or swim caps. So you get scum and plasters and hair floating everywhere. Bleuch.

LogicLoverLlama · 21/04/2024 22:26

Someone is taking the piss out of you, I've been to a few swim parks in France, next to Disney, literally last year, all baggy Bermuda shorts everywhere

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/04/2024 22:28

Beansandneedles · 21/04/2024 21:16

It's crazy to me too. We were there last year and I wasn't allowed in the pool in a sports shirt (like swimming costume material) that I'd put on to keep my skin out of the sun. Burkinis and things also prohibited. Kids all in one sun suits...nope. everyone had to be in the skimpiest swim wear. We're all super fair skinned and most of the pools had no shade. Put me off going back

It’s a pervy thing, then, innit. Lifeguards must be made up.

Get him some endurance jammers like these. Endurance jammers are high waisted so he may find them better to wear.

m00rfarm · 21/04/2024 22:31

It is interesting, as I was told it was because the baggy shorts hold too much water compared with tighter fitting clothes, and that too much water was being wasted when people got out of the pool.

Foodiefan · 21/04/2024 22:35

It looks like you’ll be OK from what PP have said, but having lived in France, this is the type of trunks my male relatives wore, it doesn’t have to be classic budgie smugglers

There’s another thread about those scrunch butt shorts (outer wear). Technically you could wear those all over town and they would also fit the bill for skimpy French swimming gear.

honestly, some rules are archaic, put in place during a time when it might have made sense. But the world moves on….happens everywhere.

That’s a pubic swimming baths rule. Not at resorts filled with Brits.

Truly excellent typo there!

FunnysInLaJardin · 21/04/2024 23:02

all I can say is fucking French.

We go to France a lot and have had to buy the DC and dh 'French' swimming trunks.

Seriously, it is only the French who do this shit

FreeRider · 21/04/2024 23:04

Fucking Brits thinking local customs don't apply to them.

A Fucking French Person

PrincessOlga · 21/04/2024 23:05

What a bizarre rule. I would have thought it would be the other way around! I am not up on men's swimwear at all, but are there not tight body-hugging shorts which actually go at least halfway down the thighs? Would they pass muster? I am sure I have seen Olympic swimmers wearing them...

I hope women are not told they have to wear "Brigitte Bardot bikinis"... Eek!

😂I am not a brit, but touche!

Lifeisgood1 · 21/04/2024 23:10

Is it Les Village nature? You don't need to wear them

Scarletttulips · 21/04/2024 23:10

We have this rule here for the children’s swimming - the baggy shorts fill with air and cause issues in the water. Most boys wear the long tight shorts.

I don’t know why all the aghast! Woman wear tight swimsuits, not baggy stuff. Why shouldn’t the boys?

If it helps I'm also not a brit and won't be giving your country a cent of my tourism.

Scarletttulips · 21/04/2024 23:13

restrictions were needed to stop men wearing baggy swimsuits at the beach or around town and then bringing back dust, sand and sweat when they enjoy a dip in the pool

Actually I think they have a point! It’s the same as wearing your PJs to Sainsburys and getting back in bed! Yuk! Glad they have this rule now.

BlueBox81 · 21/04/2024 23:13

We've also stayed at this Centre Parks and my dh wore normal baggy swimshorts and no-one said anything.

StockpotSoup · 21/04/2024 23:17

PickAChew · 21/04/2024 21:10

What's stopping them from already wearing them under their shorts before they get to the pool, though?

You can’t legislate for every single possibility. The vast majority of people won’t do that.

BlueBox81 · 21/04/2024 23:13

This attitude is part of the problem. Tight trunks aren’t “abnormal”, and baggy shorts really aren’t proper swimwear.

FreeRider · 21/04/2024 23:20

@mrsdineen2 I'm sure France will survive.

Not only. Adequate sport wear and hygienic routine involving soap before and after swimming in the pool are standard in half of Europe.

samarrange · 21/04/2024 23:21

On why this is so, there's a discussion among French people on that topic here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PasDeQuestionIdiote/comments/14rl4wt/pourquoi_pas_de_shorts_pour_les_mecs_en_piscine/ (perhaps an automatic translator will work if needed).

One person, who says they know someone who works at a pool, suggests that the issue is that ordinary shorts are made of less good quality material than speedos, and bits of that get stuck in the filters.

Others mention the hygiene question. Apparently these rules date from 50 years ago, when anyone wearing shorts was probably wearing cotton shorts rather than modern microfibres.

Personally I've always wondered if it was maybe because one time someone got their long baggy shorts (or perhaps the associated tie cords) stuck in an impeller and drowned.
