MIL annoyed Dh told family we're expecting

Dh and I went to see his auntie, cousin and nephew and broke the news that we're expecting a baby and it was very lovely and they are very excited for us.

We then went to see MIL and FIL and mentioned we'd told the family and that they are happy for us and she flipped.

She shouted that she wanted to tell them and that its up to her to tell them we're expecting and it was awful of us to do so.

Dh argued that its his baby and up to him who and when he tells them, she then said that we're selfish and don't care about her..

Are we being unreasonable here for wanting to tell people ourselves?

You dh needs to send a text to his mum saying - or phone her to say;

I was upset by your outburst yesterday - wife is pregnant and it was a completely normal thing to do, telling aunty/cousins etc. You should not have flipped about it - it made things uncomfortable at a time that should be joyful.

Please try to be supportive. I want you to be involved, rather than the type of mother in law that all the jokes are made about.

Don’t bother with this. He’s told her and once is enough.

Don’t, whatever you do, tell anyone when you’re in labour, and make sure he tells your parents first when the baby arrives.

Overtheatlantic · 21/04/2024 13:33

My sil texted me to say that my niece had some very important news to share with me. 😳 Fortunately my niece had already called me with the happy news. I think some people struggle with impulse control!

Victoriasponge12 · 21/04/2024 13:39

YANBU she sounds nuts. I imagine you’ll be starting lots of similar posts to this once the baby arrives. Hopefully your DH will be supportive of you both putting firm boundaries in place.

jollygoose · 21/04/2024 13:41

Yes she is being ridiculous but I do think she deserved to be the first to know beside your parents.

She already knew! She just wanted to be the big I AM and share the news herself.

Yup! She wanted to make it all about her.

OP your DH needs to put a stop to this right now, or God help you when you actually give birth.

DrJoanAllenby · 21/04/2024 14:09

Make up something so she can announce it like the Queen giving a speech and when the other family members contact you asking you about it, lie and deny it saying the old bay must be going senile.

That is an excellent response.

While my mum wouldn't behave like this, she would think she had a much right to tell people others news.

I remember when we got engaged, we rang my mum then my now DH was quickly ringing everyone of my family (I was driving) so we could tell them in person before I mum got to them first.

Thankfully when we got pregnant she lived in a different time zone so she was last of the immediate family to know but it meant we had time to tell people.

LookItsMeAgain · 21/04/2024 14:20

She's doolally.

You can tell who you want, when you want.

Your MiL wants this to be all about her becoming a grandmother. Feck that for a game of soldiers.

Good luck when the baby arrives, she’s going to be a nightmare.

I was thinking this too. You’re going to be in a for bumpy few years. It’s a god job your DH has normal boundaries.

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 21/04/2024 14:24

She shouted that she wanted to tell them and that its up to her to tell them we're expecting and it was awful of us to do so.

Did she?

ridingfreely · 21/04/2024 14:27

Best case she's just disappointed she wasn't there to share the exciting conversation with the info shared by you

Worst case she's batshit and you need to start laying the law down now or she will be a nightmare at every turn

Ps - do not share name ideas with her at all

O dear, this is a sign of things to come! Time to put some boundaries in place now.

Cherrysoup · 21/04/2024 14:40

Put her on an information diet, don’t tell her a ruddy thing. Major boundaries needed, she sounds batshit.

diddl · 21/04/2024 14:48

How long had MIL known?

Long enough to tell the people she wanted to?

I have visions of Op & husband leaping out of the car to tell MIL then deliberately speeding to tell other relatives before ML gets the chance to let them know!

Husband & I both lived away so in all honesty we told parents, siblings & friends & left parents to filter it to the rest of the family.

Would you have cared if MIL had already passed the news on?

Op for goodness sake don't tell her your due date, when you go into labour or discuss names!

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 21/04/2024 14:48

She’s fucking insane. I’d leave her out of everything from now on. She’s made it clear she’s going to be a nightmare.

Rabbitsarebraver · 21/04/2024 14:55

Standard MIL, mine is the same. Got upset because I posted a picture on my instagram where I had a bump at a wedding, before she had chance to tell one of her friends (a friend I’ve never met)

Coconutter24 · 21/04/2024 15:07

Your baby, your news to share

HungryAllTheTime894 · 21/04/2024 15:09

Bad sign for things to come...although thank god your DP is on your side!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 21/04/2024 15:11

She's a pathetic child. Don't doubt for a minute that yanbu. I'm glad your DH seems reasonable.

TwinklySloth · 21/04/2024 15:30

Your MIL is a nightmare, you'll have to barricade the door when you're giving birth, that woman will want to be there. Good luck.

Nanny0gg · 21/04/2024 15:43

beetr00 · 21/04/2024 12:51

@Foood just wondering why you'd tell your husband's aunt before his mum?

Family dynamics?

They didn't
