Washing up - is DH filthy or am I overreacting?

I have name changed for this. Dh and I have a disagreement about washing up water. He feels that you fill the sink, start with cleanest stuff eg glasses work your way through to the dirty stuff and no need to change the water unless the bubbles disappear, even if the water looks dirty.

I fill the sink, wash, rinse under running water, and if the water gets cloudy I change it.

I just caught him washing a cereal bowl in this:

I think it's disgusting. He thinks it is fine 'as it was the last thing to be washed'. We have agreed to abide by the MN poll for future washing up.

So, YABU DH is sensible and timesaving, of course the last few things will be washed in cloudy water.

YANBU DH is filthy and clean water and rinsing are the way to go.

^ This.

Use a washing-up bowl and you can tip loose crumbs, the dregs from mugs, cereal milk and whatever else down between the bowl and the sink before washing them up in the bowl. No wonder the water gets manky if you wash up like that.

Does nobody get taught how to do household tasks properly any more?

Surely you tip loose crumbs, milk dregs etc down the drain before you put them in the basin?! Then there's no need to tip them down the side and the water stays clean

I put everything on the dish rack to dry so there is no soap 🤷🏻‍♀️ I feel like I'm in the twilight zone here 😆

But the chemicals from the soap will still be there though, just dried? 😅

Yes, in the 80s there was The Brownie Cook Book with the instructions in it - I learned how to wash up from that using same method! My mum never had any issues with it.

Oh, yes, that was it! I can picture the book now.

AIBunnecessary · 20/04/2024 19:34

Nope YANBU I always wash things under running water I cannot stand people that wash up like this and even worse if they then don't rinse after either!

Kalevala · 20/04/2024 19:35

OkPedro · 20/04/2024 19:23

What would I be rinsing afterwards for? I rinse first because there will be food/tea/coffee residue on the dishes. I've washed them in clean water.

Just water, no soap? You rinse to rinse off the soap.

Soap doesn't evaporate, just the water.

@cardibach
you really should wash the soap suds off. The chemicals are really not good for you (chemicals) and their purpose is to carry the food away, so you rinse it off

Funny I have suffered no ill effects then…
I use a dishwasher now, but I managed to get through childhood to my early 30s without contracting some awful soap disease.

What are these crumbs and dregs? I have two cats for that.

For those who do post rinse, do you have a shower after a bath, and maybe a shower before a bath too?

I don't bath

notmybear · 20/04/2024 19:49

@Kalevala Me neither. Huge waste of water if anything..

timenowplease · 20/04/2024 20:29

Fine if he rinsed in hot water but as he's not then yeah - grim.

Haydenn · 20/04/2024 20:31

Unless you’re my ex MIL who used to keep a sink of water all day to wash up as she went along, which is always going to be wrong I’d say it’s the prerogative of the person doing it.

DitheringBlidiot · 20/04/2024 20:33

"Caught" would suggest he was doing something he shouldn't be doing.

Water looks fine. Your way is wasteful.

If he's always washed up like this and it's never been an issue, why is it an issue now all of a sudden. Has it made you unwell?

DitheringBlidiot · 20/04/2024 20:44

Remaker · 20/04/2024 13:24

Judging from this thread, germ phobia seems to be responsible for a lot of water waste. Your DH’s way is fine.

People may be shocked to know that there are entire countries that don’t use washing up bowls. Why would you put a plastic bowl inside the sink? Makes no sense!

They're good if you don't have a double sink, and you can tip liquids down the side. Milk, for instance.

But other than that, and maybe then being softer than metal when washing up wine glasses, I don't really see the point jn them. We have one because we haven't got a double sink.

Yeahno · 20/04/2024 20:45

MIL washes like this. It makes me angry, I think its disgusting. I swear some of the things she washed were cleaner before she washed them. I almost took a picture to show my husband something she had washed the last time she was here, it was still greasy and filthy, had to talk myself out of it because what is the point. We have told her to stop washing up, she won't stop. She thinks she is helping. Sometimes I quickly rewash after her.
And the smell. The not rinsing afterwards leaves a smell. I smell it in MIL's house and also after awhile when she is here. If you wash like this and you can't smell it, you gotten used to it. Also sometimes fruit taste like onions and garlic after using the chopping board or the water taste funny especially with plastic cups. At this stage, although I like MIL, I'm ready to for her to go and not come back for a long time.
Also for the "well she raised you husband and he didn't die, its not poison" people, not everything that is bad causes death.

hottchocolatte · 20/04/2024 20:46

I don't agree with either of you.

I rinse everything first before washing in hot soapy water so there are no food remnants in the water.

be as flippant as you like. Your health doesn't really interest me.

you don't know what its done to your body, its not like you suddenly go purple.🙄🙄

but keep laughing all you like.

Well, my dad made it to 97 in excellent health, so I don’t think it did anything very drastic to his, especially since he experienced damp housing and poor nutrition as a youngster in the 20s on top of that…
it’s very diluted. Most of it runs off. It’s not like drinking it…

crumblingschools · 20/04/2024 20:54

@YeahComeOnThen surely you would need to be licking the soap suds in sufficient quantity for them to be more harmful than other substances that we eat, breathe in etc

crumblingschools · 20/04/2024 20:59

I’m assuming the manic rinsers surround themselves with a multitude of cleaning chemicals including the ones who use bleach as washing up liquid, so rinsing soap suds off plates is going to make very little difference to their exposure to harmful chemicals

Bananadramallamas · 20/04/2024 21:01

I'd just be glad he was doing the washing up, tbh. 😏

No. I personally couldn't possibly not rinse as I wash up with a soapy sponge, not diluted soapy water. I buy very few cleaning products, fairy liquid, bleach for the loo, and white vinegar cover it all.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 20/04/2024 21:03

I was taught to wash up like your DH does. Change the water when the bubbles go. The only thing I'd do differently is wash the glasses separately. Prevents breakages and my DM was red hot on having sparkling glassware.

EnglishBluebell · 20/04/2024 21:09

Eww 🤢 I do my washing up under a running tap. I cannot get my head around having a washing up bowl. Utterly rank

wintersgold · 20/04/2024 21:12

I don't understand people who fill up a sink to wash things - this is inherently unhygienic, no? Just wash everything under fresh, running water
