Is this friend taking the piss?

My friend and I visit each other with our children (5 years old) often, we usually alternate hosting.

No long ago we were at her house and they were talking about this juice they started drinking, which is on the expensive side. She diluted it with water for the 4 of us saying that is because of the sugar content but also to make it last longer.
Fair enough.

DD and I really liked the juice and started buying it. I didn’t want to dilute it for myself so DD asked to try it undiluted and she prefers that way too.

So next time the friend is due to visit, I tell DD that I will dilute the juice for the 4 of us because this is like how they drink it (and I didn’t want to create friction between friend and her DD in case her DD wanted the juice undiluted too.

So they came, and when is snack time DD explains (not my instructions, out of her own accord) that we like the juice undiluted but we will dilute it today because they are visiting.

So friend very quickly say ‘absolutely not’ since it is our house, they can drink it undiluted too.
Okay no problem.
And they really love it and keep having more. I serve in a jar so topped up when needed.

Then it was our turn to visit them again and to my surprise, friend serves 4 glasses of the diluted juice and that is it.

Then her DD blurts out that she is looking forward to come to our house next so she can drink lots of undiluted juice again😅

Friend was mortified and quickly changed the topic.

Btw, her household income is double than mine. But I appreciate she might have debt as she is always complaining about money and the price of things… for instance she complained that her cleaner uses too much product and should use more elbow grease lol.

I don’t have debt. Nor a cleaner.

Should I serve unlimited undiluted juice next time?

Fuck me who gives a shit about stuff like this..Hmm

Thulpelly · 19/04/2024 20:53

Wtf did I just read that many paragrgaphs about juice

No your friend isn’t ‘taking the piss’ you’re weird to give it any thought

Caroparo52 · 19/04/2024 20:36

Good grief. Has it come to this?

With the current cost of living crisis, I expect that these small things have begun to occur to a lot of people as the costs are adding up.

I'd fucking LOVE for this sort of nonsense to be the biggest worry in my life right now 🤯

Who the hell cares how you "serve your juice"?! Or just ask how they want it 🤷🏼‍♀️ I mean Jeeeezz

I'm pretty sure it's just because she's trying to make it healthier for her daughter if she's drinking it at home regularly.

People seem to have mistaken the AIBU section on Mumsnet for Literary Review or the New Statesman...

What was it about the title "is this friend taking the piss" that led you to believe this was going to be an intellectual debate about world politics?

It's the AIBU section of an open forum.. random chat about fairly irrelevant things is the whole point.

The irony of the number of people who don't think it's worthy of discussion and a waste of time to even consider yet have spent their own time commenting anyway....at least the juice issue actually affects OP directly herself!

NeverEnoughPants · 19/04/2024 21:02

I dilute orange juice - not to be cheap, but because I prefer it. It's really refreshing.

But yeah, your friend sounds cheap. Have it ready diluted before they arrive.

Ourshoddyhouse · 19/04/2024 21:19

What.
Is.
The.
Juice?

Igmum · 19/04/2024 21:29

Is it M&S Apple, Raspberry and Rhubarb? Now that is 😋

But yes, she sounds a bit of a CF (I'm biased against anyone who moans at the cost of cleaning products used by their cleaner).

SamWinchestersHair · 19/04/2024 21:59

I love posts like this when they won’t name a minor detail as it’s outing, like your rich friend won’t recognise this straight away if she read it as it’s so bloody bizarre

Tbry24 · 19/04/2024 22:18

Next time do a small glass of the juice with a ton of icecubes and a straw so it’s fancy. But still diluted. If that doesn’t work serve water 😁

Noseybookworm · 19/04/2024 22:54

Just serve up some cheap squash 😂

Tooshytoshine · 19/04/2024 23:04

You seem to think your friend is generally a bit tight or selfish with money.

You don't have to serve them the expensive juice. You can choose.

Btw, I am hoping it is beetroot juice and the children are precociously wearing spotless white linen.

Dita73 · 19/04/2024 23:05

I’ve just read the entire thread as I was confused and thought I must be missing something but I’m none the wiser. Why the hell would anyone give a toss about something like that?! Bizarre

Hankunamatata · 19/04/2024 23:09

So it's like fruit juice that she chooses to dilute?

Flip. Just serve squash next time

ButterflyKu · 19/04/2024 23:14

Does it really matter? Give it however you see fit

MoonWoman69 · 19/04/2024 23:21

I wish this was all I had to worry about! Bloody hell, I can't believe I've just read this and all the comments! I need a lie down and a neat Ribena!!! 🤣

It is POM, and no, I’m not sponsored unfortunately

I will certainly buy the M&S apple juice next time I go there, I’m very curious now

hottchocolatte · 20/04/2024 08:04

Just tell them you don't have any of that juice next time?

It seems really ridiculous to me, and yes a piss take, of your friends to dilute it for you (pretending they like it that when clearly they are being tight) and then insist on having it undiluted at yours.

Or just dilute.

or tell them next time "can we have it undiluted please?"

hottchocolatte · 20/04/2024 08:05

What is a POM?

hottchocolatte · 20/04/2024 08:06

Got it

PossumintheHouse · 20/04/2024 11:43

POM! I knew it! I am a juice genius!

GabriellaFaith · 20/04/2024 17:37

I'd say your house your rules, her house her rules to a great extent?

But I would be a bit concerned about the lots and lots of juice. At that age I believe they should have a maximum 4oz of fruit juice per day from a dietary point of view, and I'm sure being sugary and acidic isn't great for their softer baby teeth either.

So maybe limit regardless so it's a treat not endless? X

pineapplesundae · 20/04/2024 18:02

Tell friend you’re cutting back on sugar and serve diluted juice.

DoodleDoo37 · 20/04/2024 18:03

You really do need to get out more.......

Ohhoho · 20/04/2024 18:26

Buy Rocks squash it’s for diluting and all natural with no nasty seeeteners.
