Is this friend taking the piss?

My friend and I visit each other with our children (5 years old) often, we usually alternate hosting.

No long ago we were at her house and they were talking about this juice they started drinking, which is on the expensive side. She diluted it with water for the 4 of us saying that is because of the sugar content but also to make it last longer.
Fair enough.

DD and I really liked the juice and started buying it. I didn’t want to dilute it for myself so DD asked to try it undiluted and she prefers that way too.

So next time the friend is due to visit, I tell DD that I will dilute the juice for the 4 of us because this is like how they drink it (and I didn’t want to create friction between friend and her DD in case her DD wanted the juice undiluted too.

So they came, and when is snack time DD explains (not my instructions, out of her own accord) that we like the juice undiluted but we will dilute it today because they are visiting.

So friend very quickly say ‘absolutely not’ since it is our house, they can drink it undiluted too.
Okay no problem.
And they really love it and keep having more. I serve in a jar so topped up when needed.

Then it was our turn to visit them again and to my surprise, friend serves 4 glasses of the diluted juice and that is it.

Then her DD blurts out that she is looking forward to come to our house next so she can drink lots of undiluted juice again😅

Friend was mortified and quickly changed the topic.

Btw, her household income is double than mine. But I appreciate she might have debt as she is always complaining about money and the price of things… for instance she complained that her cleaner uses too much product and should use more elbow grease lol.

I don’t have debt. Nor a cleaner.

Should I serve unlimited undiluted juice next time?

I'm not sure which of the IBU/INBU options to select to be honest.

You would be unreasonable to keep serving the undiluted juice if she doesn't serve it undiluted. You've mentioned it's quite expensive so when they come, only serve it diluted. Have a big jug of it already prepared and stored in the fridge if needs be.
When it runs out, serve iced water.
Stop being taken for a mug!

RosaBaby2 · 19/04/2024 16:59

If you won't reveal what juice can you at least tell us the price?

justanotherrandomperson · 19/04/2024 17:00

I do think it's rather cheeky of them to drink lots of it undiluted when you're serving, then offer the diluted version when you're visiting. Your friend obviously knows you prefer it undiluted, but she's saving herself a bit of money by ignoring that.

It's petty, but it would irk me. I'd serve it diluted the next time they come around (or just serve something else entirely). If anyone asks, you've decided that the lighter version is better with whatever food or snacks you're serving alongside. 😉

(I'm also wondering if it's pomegranate juice.)

Oh, and I voted YABU to serve undiluted, because I'm petty, as stated above. 😅

I’m meant to be cooking dinner but now I need to know what the juice is. Tell us!!!

PineappleTime · 19/04/2024 17:03

Just tell her you haven't got any of the expensive juice and serve them ribena next time

I would imagine your friend is thinking because of the sugar content she’s diluting it at home and when they come to your house her daughter can have it undiluted as that’s how you drink it?

I can’t believe you’re thinking about the financial implications of diluted/undiluted juice.

Yes this!

My first thought was she's diluting it because of the sugar content so it's healthier for her child, she didn't want you to dilute it especially for her at your house because she's polite but at home she wants to carry on diluting....end of story.

pictoosh · 19/04/2024 17:05

Is it Welch's grape juice?

Some of these juices are so thick and sugary they benefit from a wee scoosh of water in the top of the glass. More refreshing that way.
Welch's is like that...pure syrup until I add a dash of water.

fixies · 19/04/2024 17:06

Isn't she diluting it to reduce the sugar content?

Fluffywigg · 19/04/2024 17:09

End the friendship.

You can’t be going round diluting juice here there and everywhere. It’s not on

justanotherrandomperson · 19/04/2024 17:10

It's not as though it's difficult to dilute it at OP's house, if sugar is the main concern. Fill the glass halfway with juice and top up with water. Possibly swirl a spoon, and you're done.

Instead, Friend's daughter has openly stated that she's looking forward to unlimited, sugary, undiluted juice at OP's house. Friend didn't try to curtail her daughter's sugar consumption then, and if that were her true motivation, surely she'd have said something at the time. Parents who are that worried about their children consuming excess sugar don't tend to turn it on and off so easily, ime.

paristotokyo · 19/04/2024 17:19

Can't advise until we know which juice 😌

forrestgreen · 19/04/2024 17:28

I'd work it out so I only have 4 1/2 glasses worth left so you'd better dilute it to top it up...

Then next day miraculously find another bottle.

QuackaRoo · 19/04/2024 17:35

I'd fucking LOVE for this sort of nonsense to be the biggest worry in my life right now 🤯

Who the hell cares how you "serve your juice"?! Or just ask how they want it 🤷🏼‍♀️ I mean Jeeeezz

I'm pretty sure it's just because she's trying to make it healthier for her daughter if she's drinking it at home regularly.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 19/04/2024 17:38

I'd have just a small amount of said juice left next time they come. Either they have lots of diluted or a small amount of undiluted. Cos that's all you've got.

pictoosh · 19/04/2024 17:39

@QuackaRoo - that your contribution is it?
Thanks for sparing a minute to berate the thread content. We are honoured.

NightPuffins · 19/04/2024 17:43

I would just not buy that juice when the friend is coming to avoid the whole situation.
Also wondering what this magical juice is...?

Peachy2005 · 19/04/2024 17:48

Serve something else!

You didn’t set up the vote clearly 🙃

You mentioning it, is 100% weirder 😂

CurlewKate · 19/04/2024 17:56

Can you afford to buy the juice and serve it undiluted? If you can-do it. If you can-don't. Sorted.

BaronessBomburst · 19/04/2024 18:07

Diluted or not, please promise that next time you will serve it in cocktail glasses with umbrellas and a cherry. 🍹

GoldenTrout · 19/04/2024 18:11

gailedit · 19/04/2024 14:46

I was going to serve it diluted to accomodate them and not make her worried about sugar but DD ‘spoiled’ the plan by revealing our habits

I think it would be rude to serve undiluted when I know they prefer diluted but friend changed her mind which is fine too

Look, just don't serve it at all, and don't have it in the house. How difficult can it be to offer them squash, water or some other type of juice?

PossumintheHouse · 19/04/2024 18:22

Right, I'm willing to bet it is either:

POM pomegranate juice
Copella apple juice
Naked green smoothie
M&S Pressed Pink Lady apple juice

Am I right?

God, I must be bored.

GreekDogRescue · 19/04/2024 18:25

Yabu for not revealing the magic juice
Apricot?
Yes friend does sound a bit tight.

DoreenonTill8 · 19/04/2024 18:27

I'm thinking it's forever living aloe juice drink....
