Is this friend taking the piss?

My friend and I visit each other with our children (5 years old) often, we usually alternate hosting.

No long ago we were at her house and they were talking about this juice they started drinking, which is on the expensive side. She diluted it with water for the 4 of us saying that is because of the sugar content but also to make it last longer.
Fair enough.

DD and I really liked the juice and started buying it. I didn’t want to dilute it for myself so DD asked to try it undiluted and she prefers that way too.

So next time the friend is due to visit, I tell DD that I will dilute the juice for the 4 of us because this is like how they drink it (and I didn’t want to create friction between friend and her DD in case her DD wanted the juice undiluted too.

So they came, and when is snack time DD explains (not my instructions, out of her own accord) that we like the juice undiluted but we will dilute it today because they are visiting.

So friend very quickly say ‘absolutely not’ since it is our house, they can drink it undiluted too.
Okay no problem.
And they really love it and keep having more. I serve in a jar so topped up when needed.

Then it was our turn to visit them again and to my surprise, friend serves 4 glasses of the diluted juice and that is it.

Then her DD blurts out that she is looking forward to come to our house next so she can drink lots of undiluted juice again😅

Friend was mortified and quickly changed the topic.

Btw, her household income is double than mine. But I appreciate she might have debt as she is always complaining about money and the price of things… for instance she complained that her cleaner uses too much product and should use more elbow grease lol.

I don’t have debt. Nor a cleaner.

Should I serve unlimited undiluted juice next time?

I dilute fruit juice with water, and always have (as does my entire family). I find it claggy and not refreshing otherwise, and would need to drink water afterwards.

I actually thought that was normal?

No

AliciaCared · 19/04/2024 15:58

Bolinger?

Justme2023123 · 19/04/2024 16:05

I dilute apple juice as I prefer it as a long drink, and there's too much sugar in it if I drink as much as I want. So I have about 2/3 to 3/4 juice and 1/3 to 1/4 water.

Cannot believe this is my 2nd post today on things being too sweet...need a life

pelotonaddiction · 19/04/2024 16:06

Qwerty21 · 19/04/2024 14:33

I don't understand this at all. Surely you only dilute cordial type of juice, other juice is served as packaged as it's ready to drink?

I dilute orange juice for myself, half water half orange and loads of ice. It's really refreshing

Maddy70 · 19/04/2024 16:08

Shes not taking the piss. That's how she makes it last longer

How could you get bothered by this?

Time4achangeithink · 19/04/2024 16:09

I think you just should not have served it to her because of her odd behaviour of diluting when you was at hers. If someone is behaving odd , take a hint and don't add to the crazy. Sorry i mean that in the kindest way to you because orange-gate was not your doing!!!

So let op make it last longer too.. did you read a different post ????? Its a drink that doesn't need to be diluted. Said friend dilutes it to save money but goes to ops house and drinks gallons of the stuff.. that is excuse my French TAKING THE PISS!

Powshed · 19/04/2024 16:12

Is it M&S pink lady apple juice? That stuff is like crack

Talipesmum · 19/04/2024 16:16

I would revel in being the bountiful provider of luxury full fat juice whenever they come round. The house of plenty.

I totally see why she keeps it diluted at her house - eking out the pricey tasty stuff to make it last longer and go further (presuming it’s still tasty that way). And if she shows a chink of weakness at home by serving it full strength, her daughter won’t let her hear the last of it and will be always pushing for it!

I had never heard of anyone diluting fresh type juices till I got to university and people would mix orange juice with water half and half. I thought it was a bit sorry, but having started buying expensive juice for myself I did get it, and after a while you start enjoying the more refreshing version too. I don’t think it’s that unusual but everyone is different.

edited to add - this is all entirely your daughter’s fault! It’s quite funny really.

FictionalCharacter · 19/04/2024 16:20

She’s a stingy mare, serving you diluted juice to make it go further in her house, and demanding it undiluted in your house.

easylikeasundaymorn · 19/04/2024 16:23

😂"negative view of people"
Did you miss the fact the thread heading was "is this friend taking the piss?"

It's not me ascribing dodgy motives to this poor dehydrated woman, it's literally the actual AIBU!

Its not as if the AIBU was "AIBU to treat my friend to a drink she can't afford herself" and I've jumped in saying "no she's a greedy pisstaker" - clearly OPs own view was that friend was taking her opportunity to drink gallons of undiluted nectar of heaven on someone else's dime.

Tlolljs · 19/04/2024 16:25

When you say juice do you mean juice juice or squash? Definitely dilute squash but not juice juice. Clementine juice from Tesco is lush.

ClawedButler · 19/04/2024 16:26

For the love of....unless this juice is the actual tears of Jesus, just drink the stuff however you want.

I just do not have the fx to give about how who drinks what.

Shinyandnew1 · 19/04/2024 16:29

So friend very quickly say ‘absolutely not’ since it is our house, they can drink it undiluted too. Okay no problem.

It’s your house, your call. I would have diluted it anyway.

easylikeasundaymorn · 19/04/2024 16:30

Anyway I'm overinvested in this now so I've gone on a hunt for the most expensive easily available juice in the UK

https://ww2.ocado.com/products/daylesford-organic-coldpress-b-green-juice/315698011

The above would work out at over £28 per litre - at which price I'd be diluting it too!

However giving OP the benefit of the doubt that she's not buying tiny 250ml servings and serving them in her big jar I'm putting forward a more reasonable sized bottle
https://ww2.ocado.com/products/daylesford-organic-apple-bilberry-juice/50228011
Bargain at a mere £7.70 per litre. Let them guzzle it down.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 19/04/2024 16:30

To all the non-juice diluters, I would just like to say, orange juice mixed with sparkling water and lots of ice is yum. It does tend to froth if you add the water to the juice so pour carefully.

I will often drink that in a pub if I'm not drinking as pub OK is not acidic so not great undiluted for a full night out.

Luxell934 · 19/04/2024 16:32

Is she taking the piss about what, serving diluted juice?

I'm so confused.

You think she's being cheap because she only served you one glass of diluted juice?

Alwaysalwayscold · 19/04/2024 16:35

YABU not to disclose the secret expensive juice.

Oh and next time don't give any juice at all.

KreedKafer · 19/04/2024 16:35

I just ... who cares? You serve the bloody juice how you want it, let her serve the juice how she wants it. It's not really relevant whether she's tight or not.

sonjadog · 19/04/2024 16:37

So what's the juice then? A juice brand is hardly going to be revealing, is it, so why wouldn't you just say what it is?

LittleMonks11 · 19/04/2024 16:37

My head is literally spinning about Juicegate!

stayathomer · 19/04/2024 16:40

I hate when people say that someone is more well off than them so they don’t know why they’re (paraphrasing here) being a bit stingy/tight. People pick what they can afford and what try to ease up on other things, ie they pick their treats and luxuries and try to hold back. In this house things like bottled smoothies, Ribena (as opposed to shop brand) and Tropicana are things that are literally only bought at times like Christmas or if we get a special voucher or something, but we get the most expensive milk for example.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 19/04/2024 16:51

Of course she isn't taking the piss - it's a glass of juice! Have two or three glasses of it diluted at her house if it's important that you break even.

JanglingJack · 19/04/2024 16:53

My friend just keeps imitating my lifestyle.

I've named changed because its very outing and regarding something very unusual.

So right, we get this juice and we dilute it, it's quite strong, the kids don't mind it diluted. It's also a bit pricey and unusual, so she's clearly gone out to this artisan juice maker, just so she can emulate my lifestyle because obviously I earn a lot more than her (takes breath).

We've popped round a couple of times and she's serving it undiluted. Well, I don't know what her game is, there's trying to keep up with us Joneses and then there's juice flouting, right under my nose.

Then one of her kids said something innocently, and shits hit the fan. I mean I instruct my kids to tell they always have it diluted. They know this a lie, but I'm in to feeding the five thousand and they said yeah fuck it Mum, we'll lie, no skin of our noses - pocket money please.

And then I see someone has posted about it on an online forum. Huh. Money section, tips on saving - financial Times.
It was my first.

We've started diluting our almond milk, watering down the ketchup and adding lentils to baked beans now.

We'll see who has the last laugh!

Gillyyy · 19/04/2024 16:59

I would imagine your friend is thinking because of the sugar content she’s diluting it at home and when they come to your house her daughter can have it undiluted as that’s how you drink it?

I can’t believe you’re thinking about the financial implications of diluted/undiluted juice.
