Gas hobs - Yay or nay

Spinachandcheese1 · 19/04/2024 13:07

In the Uk so many people have/prefer gas hobs for cooking instead of the electric ceramic ones.

I really don’t get it.

We ended up having a gas hob only because the house we bought had one and we never prioritised it as something that needs changing.

Its been 3 years now and I sick of cleaning all little corners and attach and reattach gas hob items, so high maintenance.

Am I unreasonable?

YABU - Gas hobs are much better

YANBU - Electric ceramic hobs forever! Just wipe clean a smooth surface and all done.

Ceramic hobs don’t work very well IME

Gas ones cook well but are a PITA to clean

Induction all the way

Backtoreality1 · 19/04/2024 13:11

Gas hobs are so much better for proper cooking.....much better instant control over heat and flame size. I loathe ceramic hobs because they are a nightmare to keep clean and also not as manageable for cooking.

6Y5T · 19/04/2024 13:13

Induction is the only way

TheFoz · 19/04/2024 13:14

We have induction but I’d imagine gas would be very handy for times when there’s a power cut.

AGlinnerOfHope · 19/04/2024 13:14

Gas needs to go- bad for lung health. And such an ugly mess maker in the kitchen.

Induction all the way- but I’ve never used one. Even chefs are going induction now.

I’d love to change ours. I have covered half of it and use mainly plug in electric appliances.

nutbrownhare15 · 19/04/2024 13:15

I've only just learned about the health risks of cooking with gas. So it's a no from me and we are getting rid of ours: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/15/gas-stoves-pollution-alternatives

Scribblydoo · 19/04/2024 13:15

Induction here too. You won't regret it

mindutopia · 19/04/2024 13:17

Gas is more of a pain to clean, but I much prefer it for cooking on. And you can do things like toast a tortilla on them, which you can't do on an electric or induction hob.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 19/04/2024 13:19

They do cook so much better imo, I have an induction now and yea it’s easier to clean but it’s also a pain in the arse when you want to use both sides at ones and it no where near as fast or as easy to control as my old gas one

NannyR · 19/04/2024 13:19

Induction is just as responsive as gas for cooking, much more energy efficient, less polluting and far far easier to clean. I think the only thing gas does better is things like proper Chinese cooking where you need flames licking up the side of your wok.

KreedKafer · 19/04/2024 13:19

I mean... each to their own? Personally I really hate electric and induction hobs. I much prefer gas and that would always be my first choice. But we're all different. Just get whatever suits you.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 19/04/2024 13:20

You couldn’t pay me to have a gas hob in my house, given the horrendous level of particulates they spew out. Not worth the health risks, no matter how quickly they heat up.

AstronomyDomine · 19/04/2024 13:20

Up til a few years ago, I'd have said gas all the way. When my marriage ended I moved into rented accommodation which had a horrible electric stove so I changed it. Plumbing the gas stove in would have been a big job, so I went for induction. Apart from having to make sure your pans work with induction, there were no issues at all.
The pans are cleaner (no black sooty bottoms), the induction surface itself is dead easy to clean, and the cooking time is quite a bit quicker. I didn't believe this at first, but the induction works directly with the pan (hence the need to get induction-friendly cookware) and no heat escapes up the side - it all hits the pan. And, bonus, it's as controllable as a gas stove.
I'll never go back.

Amara123 · 19/04/2024 13:21

Gas is really bad for lungs, replaced my gas hob with induction, no regrets.
Honestly no one should buy gas hobs, too harmful.

I use a flat cast iron pan on my induction hob to toast tortillas, works a treat

Only thing I’ve found that induction can’t do is burn things directly on the flame like aubergine for baba ganoush. Have to use the BBQ for that.

I also wonder about gas being phased out longer term but doesn’t seem like this will happen soon.

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/04/2024 13:22

We have gas because we live in an area with frequent power cuts in the winter.

AvocadoSurprise · 19/04/2024 13:23

Another vote for induction. We were persuaded to switch by the sales person when we got our new kitchen fitted 8 years ago. He said it was safer & cheaper. Other than the cost of buying new pans, I have been absolutely delighted with it. Would never go back now.
If it was a choice between gas & ceramic though, I'd choose gas as it's far more controllable. I've hated every ceramic hob I've ever used.

50yearsfreedom · 19/04/2024 13:24

I love gas but we have induction in our new kitchen- slightly nervous as have never used it before so I am finding this thread reassuring. I’ve always preferred cleaning gas hobs as well as you can really scrub without worrying about scratching it.

I hadn’t heard the gas was polluting.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/04/2024 13:26

Neither. Hate them.both with a passion. I want an induction hob. I had one in my previous house and miss it so much. Our current house has a gas hob, can't wait to change it

TheFlis · 19/04/2024 13:27

Just switched from gas to induction and it is dreamy! Just as responsive as gas and on the Power setting, much hotter than gas if you want a quick blast to bring something to the boil. And the cleaning!! Nothing to take apart, just a quick wipe with a damp cloth. I would never go back.

minipie · 19/04/2024 13:27

Took me a day or two to get used to induction after gas (you do have to allow an extra second to turn it on/adjust the temp) but really not hard and since then no issues at all

Anjo2011 · 19/04/2024 13:28

Induction fan here. I was a bit nervous about swapping over but it is just as good but so much easier to keep clean. A quick wipe over and good as new.

I don't know what brand of hob you have, but IME induction hobs are much faster than gas plus just as controllable.

Nagado · 19/04/2024 13:31

We’ve got a gas cooker rather than a separate oven and hob and I love it, I wouldn’t change it for anything. Aside from being really obvious whether it’s on or off (I have a deep mistrust of electric hobs) it’s great for warming the place up while you’re cooking and making sure you can still have hot food if you have a power cut. I don’t care enough about pollution or health risks for either to be a factor.

idontlikealdi · 19/04/2024 13:31

Has job, electric oven here. Never used an induction hob but I hate electric with a passion.
