For only dressing my baby in ‘pyjamas’?

DD is 15 weeks old and small for her age (premature, still wearing 0-3months). Yesterday we attended a mums and baby music class and during the pre-class chat we got a couple of comments about how cute my DDs pyjamas were.

I dress her pretty much exclusively in babygrows and bibs, firstly because she has reflux and can write off at least one outfit a day (our record is 4 in 15 minutes!), secondly because most of our stuff is either secondhand, gifted, or cheap multipacks, thirdly because she still very much needs scratch mitts and she cannot stand cold feet or legs (socks fall off, trousers ride up). But most of all, because she’s a baby? Yeah I could waste money on little jeans and hoodies or dresses, but what’s the point? It’s expensive, wasteful, and makes life harder for both of us when it comes to changing and laundry. I’ve never really viewed babygrows as PJs before, just something babies wear.

Sounds fine to me, did the ones in question look particularly like PJ’s?

I mean babies just need to be cosy really and little outfits aren’t always the best for that l!

NuffSaidSam · 19/04/2024 09:36

It's fine. I'm sure the other people didn't mean to offend, presumably they're also sleep deprived, new mums as well?

EmmaOvary · 19/04/2024 09:39

Babygros are the most comfy thing babies can wear, especially in the early months when they spend so much time asleep. Mine lived in babygros or leggings and vests for the first few months. I’m sure no offense was intended. Your baby, your wardrobe choices!

IfIwasrude · 19/04/2024 09:39

I always dress them in baby gros, why would you not.

Bluebuddha10 · 19/04/2024 09:39

Don't get sucked into having to dress very small babies in 'mini adult clothes'. Baby grows are perfect , they are comfy, and very practical (and look cute). Babies are not dolls to play dress up with - sounds like you have got it just right OP, ignore the comments.

PoppingTomorrow · 19/04/2024 09:39

Most "outfits" for babies are unnecessary. Why would they need a coat, dungarees, etc?

Even trousers have to be taken off fully whereas a sleepsuit/babygro can just be unbuttoned.

I'm only considering moving my baby (12w) out of them because I think it will be cooler for him in the warmer weather and I want him to have his feet free to explore. But yes socks are a nightmare.

Don't get me started on shoes for babies that aren't even crawling.

TheSnowyOwl · 19/04/2024 09:40

I always dressed mine in vests and leggings or babygrows for as long as possible. Who really wants to sleep on their back with loads of buttons behind them and in uncomfortable outfits?

M&S multipack that’s cream and has little elephants on it, they are one of her more cutesy outfits I suppose, but the standard poppers down the middle design.

I know some Mums get really into buying clothes and dressing up their babies, little bows on baby girls and baby boys in little corduroy trousers etc, but I’ve never really been that fussed, as long as she’s comfortable and dry. The majority of our outfits are either neutral or ‘boys’ colours (hand-me-downs from boy cousins and friends)

I did the same with all of mine, most babies I see now are in babygrows. It's not only comfy and warm for them it's much easier to take off a babygrow for nappy changes etc

Babies need comfort and personally I find trousers, jeans scratchy and don't keep the heat in.

You do what makes your baby happy and content. I would assume people were admiring and didn't mean anything by saying what they did.

pyjamalife · 19/04/2024 09:41

My first lived in baby grows for anything!
My second probably did most of the time, too.

Sod it, I wasn't one for spending hundreds on multiple outfits that they grow out of so quick. One or two cute outfits per size was my limit.

LongCareerOfNearMisses · 19/04/2024 09:41

Mine lived in babygros for months (with vest under if needed) and I never clocked that some people see them as 'pyjamas' until someone mentioned it! They've got decades to wear 'proper' clothes, I never understood the urge to dress weeks-old babies in trousers or tights with waistbands.

GiveHerEffervescence · 19/04/2024 09:42

Babygros are what babies should wear. comfort important

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 19/04/2024 09:43

There is literally nothing worse than seeing a small baby in a pair of bloody jeans. Baby grows are the best.

I wasn’t offended, mostly just curious as I’ve never thought of babies having day clothes and night clothes before, but now I’ve actually started paying attention I’ve noticed most other babies I see her age are wearing little outfits, rather than babygrows. I’m not planning on changing how I dress her, just curious if I’m unusual or not

^^This!!
I hate seeing tiny babies in jeans (or mini adult clothes in general) they look so uncomfortable. Baby grows and hand knitted cardigans all the way for me! ❤️

BodyKeepingScore · 19/04/2024 09:45

Babygros are ideal for a baby that age, they're warm and comfortable and easy to change. I'd simply ignore the people who passed comment. There's no reason whatsoever for a child to be in fussy outfits at that age other than the vanity of the parents.

DappledThings · 19/04/2024 09:47

If you want to. Personally I found babygros more faffy than other clothes with all those poppers and mine were out of them as soon as possible. Mine lived in long or short sleeved bodysuits (still some poppers but only 2 or 3 in one line) and dungarees. Ones that just slipped over the shoulder, not with extra poppers there.

Just as comfy as babygros and far easier for me.

KeepSmiling89 · 19/04/2024 09:47

Nothing wrong with that at all. I remember putting my DD in babygrows exclusively for quite a while due to reflux - we could go through a few different babygrows every day because of it. It wasn't until she was a few months old until she started wearing little outfits and pinafores etc. DD wasn't premature, but she was very tiny and didn't fit into her 0-3 months clothes for quite a while. I remember having to buy 'tiny baby' size babygrows for her when she was first born as she was so little.

Edited

It must be an area things because it’s definitely not normal here for people to put newborns and young babies in clothes.

GinBlossom94 · 19/04/2024 09:48

All mine wore babygrows 24/7 for first few months, comfy for them and easy for me for changing nappies etc. plus much easier and quicker to wash/dry when they got changed so often

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 19/04/2024 09:49

I rarely bothered with non-baby grow until crawling (even then mostly babygrow) unless the weather was warm, in which case short sleeve/leg romper. My paediatric physio also said no waistband is better for babies (not sure why, whether just comfort or also better for internal organs not to have tight waistband). I suspect referring to them as pyjamas was more just struggling to find the word rather than being accusatory, but in any case pay no mind!

tiredandabitfat · 19/04/2024 09:50

I'm a huge advocate of babygrows and pyjamas for babies.

They look so uncomfortable in those ridiculous little outfits, jeans etc.

People often give them as gifts as they look so cute, and so many are just regifted continuously as nobody wants the faff of actually using them. Then they end up in landfill. So wasteful.

Babies spend most of their time sleeping, and the time they are awake they want something comfy that they can practice moving in.

Babygrows and pyjamas all the way.

NewJob20241 · 19/04/2024 09:50

My kids lived in baby grows until at least 8/9 months old!

Easy to change, comfortable to wear, wash well 👌🏻

mynameiscalypso · 19/04/2024 09:50

I found babygrows annoying for nappy changes so also tended to use vests/long sleeved vests and legging/soft trousers during the day. But only because I hate lots and lots of poppers. I don't care how anyone else dresses their baby though and am impressed by people who have the patience for it!

LongCareerOfNearMisses · 19/04/2024 09:52

I wouldn't go for a nap (lol, I wish) myself wearing jeans so no way would I put a baby in one when they're napping 2-3 times a day!
