For only dressing my baby in ‘pyjamas’?

DD is 15 weeks old and small for her age (premature, still wearing 0-3months). Yesterday we attended a mums and baby music class and during the pre-class chat we got a couple of comments about how cute my DDs pyjamas were.

I dress her pretty much exclusively in babygrows and bibs, firstly because she has reflux and can write off at least one outfit a day (our record is 4 in 15 minutes!), secondly because most of our stuff is either secondhand, gifted, or cheap multipacks, thirdly because she still very much needs scratch mitts and she cannot stand cold feet or legs (socks fall off, trousers ride up). But most of all, because she’s a baby? Yeah I could waste money on little jeans and hoodies or dresses, but what’s the point? It’s expensive, wasteful, and makes life harder for both of us when it comes to changing and laundry. I’ve never really viewed babygrows as PJs before, just something babies wear.

Dressed mine in babygrows during the day until she started crawling/pulling self up to stand as then her feet would get caught up and end up half way up the legs. She still wears them at night time. Love baby grows, they always look so cute. Can’t stand it when people dress little babies in jeans etc like mini adults.

I think the comments were intended as a compliment. With mine, once they were weaning and getting messy from breakfast they got changed into daytime clothes and I missed the snuggly babygros.

RuthW · 19/04/2024 12:02

Babygros are baby clothes not pjs.

Spoonthief · 19/04/2024 12:04

With my first baby I was taken in by the cute mini trousers, shoes, coats etc but soon came to realise it’s all an impractical money making nonsense aimed at vulnerable parents.

After a few weeks they got ditched in favour of practical and cozy baby grows and blankets.

Needless to say, baby number 2 got baby grows only !
Fir the first year at least !

Farmwifefarmlife · 19/04/2024 12:05

I absolutely love baby grows. Due no3 in a few months and all I have bought and plan on baby wearing is sleep suits! Zip up ones are an absolute game changer too! Outfits are such a faff!

Elebag · 19/04/2024 12:09

Yanbu. Babygros when little. Then soft dungarees over poppered t-shirts when crawling. So much easier.

LaFidola · 19/04/2024 12:09

I remember this! My baby was born in lockdown and I had been putting him in babygros as they seemed so soft and comfy.

Went to our first baby class once things opened up a bit when he was 4 months old and was surprised every other baby was dressed in actual clothes! I carried on with the baby gros though as they worked well for us and he was comfortable and happy.

I'm sure the babies in clothes were happy and comfy too but I did think big bow hairbands and several layers of clothes were a bit fussy for babies.

Can't remember when I switched but probably around 9-12 months.

I have a friend who dresses her new born baby in jeans and shoes. I've always stuck a baby grow on. But she thinks you should always make an effort. I'm sorry but jeans on a new born will forever look weird! Why do they have pockets is my next question too! What's he need them for?

For hiding bits of soggy bread stick so you stick your hand in it a few days later when you're doing the washing? 😁

takealettermsjones · 19/04/2024 12:15

Haha I missed that you said newborn.

Ohh boy. Bracing myself for onslaught of you can't give a newborn breadsticks!! 😂

I store broken bits or rice cake in my 10 months old pocket for later 🤣 very handy!

For keeping important baby things in of course! Like snot. And poo nugs.

SometimesIDowonder · 19/04/2024 12:17

Are you joking? I mostly dressed dc1 in pj's until he was one because of how cute it looked and the socks. I'd put a little zip hoodie on too if it was cold.

Also this really isn't a metric of successful parenting. Things like is your child getting interaction and affection, fed and medical treatment if needed are surely what matters.

TeaPleaseX · 19/04/2024 12:22

😂😂😂.

Why would babies need different clothes for day and night when their day and night are the same?

SareBear87 · 19/04/2024 12:28

Mines 18 months and she still gets dressed in baby grows if we're spending the day at home.
I think she only switched to "clothes" when she turned 1 as she's quite tall but with short arms so they didn't fit quite as well 🤣

EasterEgger · 19/04/2024 12:28

My child mostly lived in baby grows, vests and anything that was easy to remove like leggings or things with poppers.
With the constant spit up and blow outs I wasn't going to faff around with outfits or jeans.
I did have a few really cute clothes for occasions, but mainly found them a pain with all those buttons. Not fun when you are trying to change a wriggling baby.

NoCloudsAllowed · 19/04/2024 12:28

Some babies are recommended to start solids earlier and other countries introduce solids before six months @ColourfulSeasons

I'd wait til six months unless instructed otherwise by a doctor but in some situations earlier weaning is recommended, eg where baby needs extra fat or protein etc and BM/formula can't provide it

GreenBottles28 · 19/04/2024 12:30

DS is almost 3 months and wears a pair of leggings, a vest and a long sleeved top most days. I find separate pieces less faffy for nappy changes so babygrows are only for bed and emergency changes while out and about for us.
Honestly though, as long as they're clean and comfy, I can't imagine anyone noticing or caring what another baby's wearing!

Workawayxx · 19/04/2024 12:30

YANBU. I wouldn't call a babygro pyjamas. They're just standard outfits for babies for days or nights. I think my DS came out of babygros (some days at least) sooner than my DD because he was born in spring and when it got warmer (it was quite a hot summer that year), the sock issue isn't such a problem and a babygro would have been too warm although I did still have babygros that had short legs. DD was born in January so she was still in babygros nearly every day for ages till it warmed up.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 19/04/2024 12:32

My kid wore vests and babygros, mostly. I never really thought about them being nightwear. I very occasionally put her in a loose dress if I felt like it, with tights or leggings. But there's no dress code for babies and that is one reason why being a baby is brilliant.

Scottishskifun · 19/04/2024 12:35

I didn't start putting mine into "proper clothes" til they were out of 0-3 months size with the 2 exceptions of a pair of fleecy bottoms when it was cold and if some had bought an outfit.
I agree baby jeans are just weird!

I only did then as I didn't have enough baby gros for all day

thecatsthecats · 19/04/2024 12:37

I only moved my son into clothes when the spit ups decreased and the rolling started - he gets more practice with his trousers off.

It should be useful too for weaning when he might get half an outfit mucky.

Until then, onesies all the way!

AwBlessm · 19/04/2024 12:37

You're doing the right thing for your baby. Ignore the rest. At this stage, it's about comfort for the baby and reducing the faff for the parents. My DD lived in babygrows until about 1 and still wore them a lot after that.
