Cleaner told me off

I usually get to work early to get ready for the day as it's easier for me after a long ish commute. The work toilets are separate large cubicles with a toilet and sink in each one so I take my make up bag into work and usually spend 15-20 mins in one before I go into the office.

This morning I got ready at work as usual and as I left the cleaner was leaning on the main door waiting for me to come out so he could go in and clean. I had left some rubbish (an empty paper bag and a napkin) on top of the bin as the bin lid wasn't working when I pressed the foot pedal.

The cleaner looked annoyed as I left and then went into the cubicle. I had only walked a few steps down the corridor before he called me back shouting "lady lady!" And then beckoned me into the toilet, gestured at the rubbish saying "this is you - these are clean toilets" and picked up the rubbish and put it on top of my handbag then picked up some paper towels from the floor and stuffed them onto the top of my bag as well whilst complaining.

I was so shocked and embarrassed I took the rubbish and walked away and put it in another bin. I felt really stressed like he's going to report me to building services or something. The toilet was clean it was just the rubbish on top of the bin and I think he was annoyed waiting outside for a while. WABU?

What stopped you from lifting the lid with your hand and then disposing of your rubbish? Is that beneath you or something? Of course you were unreasonable to put your rubbish outside of the bin for someone else to clear away!

ExcitedButNervous0424 · 16/04/2024 13:01
  1. How does it take 15-20 minutes to put some make-up on? (just curious).

  2. I would have taken my rubbish with me in those circumstances.

PaulAnkaTheDoggo · 16/04/2024 13:02

So you won’t open the bin with your hand, but expect someone else to, or someone else to take your rubbish out after they’ve tidied it all?

YABU.

Anxiouslump · 16/04/2024 13:02

Yes ywbu, you should have put the rubbish in the bin. How is anyone else supposed to use it with all your rubbish sitting on the lid?

FlyingPizzaMonkey · 16/04/2024 13:03

Yabu to leave your rubbish. You could have opened the bin with your hand or found another bin. Were the paper towels yours too?

MuscariFan · 16/04/2024 13:03

I feel you'd be getting a resounding YABU if you'd put a poll ...

Put your own rubbish in the bin (and don't take up a cubicle that he might have been waiting to service for 20 minutes either).

FiveShelties · 16/04/2024 13:04

Had he been waiting for 20 minutes?

Janedoe82 · 16/04/2024 13:04

Not a nice thing to do. Who did you think was going to bin it?

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 16/04/2024 13:04

On what basis are you so high, mighty and important that you can’t put your own rubbish in the bin?

skippy67 · 16/04/2024 13:04

Yeah, you were being unreasonable. Very.

TheUndoing · 16/04/2024 13:05

The cleaner is there to clean, not to tidy up after you. YABVVVU (and are going to get your arse handed to you on this thread).

twoandcooplease · 16/04/2024 13:05

Can't damage your perfect manicure by lifting the bin lid to dispose of your own rubbish? Or some other batshit excuse?

Catza · 16/04/2024 13:06

It's unreasonable to occupy a cubicle for 20 minutes and also bloody infuriating that you left you rubbish on top of the bin. You have hands, so lift the lid or take your rubbish to another bin in the toilet.

mitogoshi · 16/04/2024 13:06

And blocking the toilet for 15-20 minutes is plainly ridiculous unless for medical reasons. Get ready elsewhere.

CountryMumof4 · 16/04/2024 13:07

Surely the most sensible solution would be to simply use your hand to lift the bin lid to dispose of your rubbish? I think I'd have been ticked off if I was the cleaner too, particularly if I'd also been waiting so long to check on a toilet.

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/04/2024 13:07

If your OH or one of your DC left trash on top of the bin because they were too lazy to open it with their hands, would you just meekly clean after them? Or would you say “hey, tidy up after yourself, I’m not your servant” etc? The cleaner was just doing as most of us would do in that situation to anyone else.

Desecratedcoconut · 16/04/2024 13:07

That's so grotty, op. God, that poor cleaner having to wait on you and teach you how to be civilized.

ovals · 16/04/2024 13:08

Should everyone using the loo after you have done the same and just left their rubbish on top of the bin?

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 16/04/2024 13:08

What were you expecting to happen to the rubbish you left on top of the bin?

pbdr · 16/04/2024 13:09

When you say the bin lid wasn't working do you mean it was firmly jammed closed such that it wasn't possible for you to open in? I'd still have taken my rubbish with me, but I have a little more sympathy if that was the case.
If you simply meant the foot pedal or whatever wasn't working and you could have just manually opened the bin then you are very much being unreasonable and need to take responsibility for your own mess in the future.

EpicAlice · 16/04/2024 13:09

YABVVVU.
Why do you think it’s for someone else to deal with your rubbish?
If you wouldn’t do it at home for someone else in your household to clean, don’t do it elsewhere.

WhoTurnedTheLightsOff · 16/04/2024 13:09

This isn't going to go well for yOU, OP.

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 16/04/2024 13:10

Well done on the cleaner for calling you out on your mess! If he hadn't, the next person in would have had to deal with it. It's rude, entitled and lazy!

WingSluts · 16/04/2024 13:10

Oh wow! The level of entitlement with you OP.

IncompleteSenten · 16/04/2024 13:10

You should have put your rubbish in the bin.
That's a fairly basic thing to do.
