9/11
Prince's death. I'd been following his forum all day when news broke of a fatality at Paisley park. All day I thought it must be someone who works there, then the news broke later that night 😭

RobertaFirmino · 13/04/2024 22:41

I was working in a nursing home on 9/11 and one of the residents came into the laundry to tell me that the Empire State Building had collapsed.

Hillsborough was another one. My friend's older brother had gone out that morning with the intention of buying a ticket from someone who couldn't go. He didn't return so we thought he was on the coach up there. I sat down with my pal and her family to watch the game and as the disaster unfolded, we were terrified for poor Dave*. Of course there were no mobiles then so all we could do was wait. Anyhow, he stumbled through the door, four pints down at 6pm saying 'Fuckin' hell, have you seen what's happened? What's for tea, Ma?'. Never made it to the footy, he let someone else take the place.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 13/04/2024 22:47

Oh and Brexit referendum. Was night feeding my baby DD and stupidly looked at my phone. Couldn't get back to sleep then as I was in shock and horrified at the damage we were about to inflict on the country.

Dullardmullard · 13/04/2024 22:49

Dunblane for me as my eldest was the same age and as it was being told no one knew what school at the time so a lot of parents including me went to their kids schools for the teachers to be gobsmacked with us all walking in fearing the worst. Hugging our kids and anyone’s within reach sobbing and then sobbing again realising the horror for the other parents.

Diana only because every damn channel was about her yes sad but come on

The Queen again on every channel

Elvis only because my mum was a fan and was crying.

LemonGelato · 13/04/2024 22:58

Ronald Reagan getting shot in 1981. I was at secondary school ad someone came in to tell the teacher who told us.

Chernobyl disaster - I was at university and the news raced around campus so fast (pre mobiles and internet!).

Fall of the Berlin wall - so incredible to watch a moment in history
Princess Diana's Death - I was in New Zealand and the news broke early afternoon so it was all over the news all afternoon whereas most of the UK woke up to it a few hours later

A few other New Zealand disasters like Air New Zealand Erebus crash where 257 people died when the plane hit the the mountain in Antartica in a whiteout. Pictures on TV of people at the airports waiting for news then the realisation it wouldn't be coming back and crying. Just awful.

The second Christchurch earthquake - watching on TV here in UK and feeling so sick seeing the damage & worrying about friends.

9/11: I was at work and someone came rushing into my office shouting about it. We had a massive TV on in a conference room and I saw the the towers go down. People were sobbing , we had so many Americans there and people who'd worked in the Towers and had friends still in them.

July London Bombings - at work knowing something had gone wrong but not knowing what and no mobile signal. Waiting for staff to arrive and getting worried when some didn't arrive (all fine but some were on platforms and got caught in the chaos).

Snowonthepeach · 13/04/2024 23:08

Diana's death - on TV 1st thing in the morning
9/11 - on a bus radio
7/7 - on TV whilst away abroad
1st covid lockdown - watched on a laptop in bed
Queen's death - on an Alexa in the kitchen

Thedogscollar · 13/04/2024 23:24

Diana's death, woke to alarm for early shift to be told of her death. So shocked.

911 woke from sleep after night shift to see news on TV. Could not quite believe what I was seeing on the tv.

Queens death died on my 60th birthday.

spiderlight · 13/04/2024 23:32

Robin Williams' suicide. We were staying with DH's parents and I remember just standing in the middle of their front room absolutely heartbroken. I'd always been a massive fan and his was the first celebrity death that really affected me. Funnily enough, I was talking about it with DS this evening.

spiderlight · 13/04/2024 23:33

Also 9/11 - we rang MIL to wish her a happy birthday and she just said 'Put the news on'. We turned it on just as the second plane hit.

YaMuvva · 13/04/2024 23:35

Oh and watching Michael Jackson’s trial verdict, I actually dumped my then BF that day. I cried for MJ’s victim (I always thought he was a pedophile and could never quite understand the support) and my BF was overjoyed that he “was found innocent” (he wasn’t) and was making some very unpleasant remarks about the child victim and how happy he was that he’d been ‘exposed as a liar’ 🙄

I was sexually abused as a child and I realised at that point that I could never ever continue to date a man who looks at the world’s most obvious pedophile and think he’s innocent. My abuser was the least obvious pedophile ever and I couldn’t bear the thought of him not believing me if I ever told him

ivyleafgeranium · 13/04/2024 23:38

James Bulger-had a new baby and watched Anne Diamond and those awful pictures of him being led away.

Diana- was sewing name tags onto son's school uniform for his first school. Couldn't understand why the radio was playing mournful music when I turned it on.

9/11-was at work. Was going into a meeting when someone said a plane had crashed into a building. We thought it would be a light aircraft. When we came out of the meeting everyone actually looked white with shock. I will never forget the atmosphere on the Tube that evening. We thought London would be next - there were so many rumours. Just wanted to get home to the children.

7/7- had celebrated London winning the Olympics the day before in Chiswick. The next day I was driving colleagues to Tottenham Hale station to get home because the whole transport network was affected.

Iamawomenphenominally · 13/04/2024 23:40

Freddy Mercury dying. At home, the first and last time I saw my very working class stoic Dad cry. He wasn't a good man. But that night he felt the emotions that most good people would have felt I think.

In the 90's: Rape becoming a crime between married couples. I remember my mum pointedly telling me about this and the look in her eyes. Wondering if you and your siblings were products of rape kind of stays with you. 😔

Diana dying. Hungover teen. My mum wouldn't let me watch the Hollyoaks catch up as she wanted to watch the news coverage.

  1. I was working in a bar and we had it on the TV screens.

Diana's death- I was in my room with my boyfriend and my mum came in and told me I was upset. But then later shocked at the level of public grief.

Twin towers - at home and pregnant. It came on the news after the first I saw the second plane in real time.

Michael Jackson's death - I was at Glastonbury and everyone thought it was a hoax.

Manchester bombing - the first thing I saw on my phone that morning was I 🖤 Manchester. It was unbelievable. I still cry now if I think of it. I remember a young girl called Olivia was missing and her mum crying on GMB and she was one of the people who lost their life. A teenage girl. It could have been my girls so easily. Just abhorrent.

The lockdown announcement. I remember thinking 3 weeks, we can do this.

I was at Glastonbury for MJ death too. Not a fan but it was quite surreal at the time.

Northernsouloldies · 13/04/2024 23:52

Dunblane..on the radio at work
I genuinely thought that can't be right.
Unfortunately it was only to correct.

Changepassword · 13/04/2024 23:53

Hillsborough - knew effected people

James Bulger's kidnap - I had family living nearby

Diana's death - just woke up with a stinking hangover,

2 x Manchester bombings , 1996 I had not long visited Manchester with college,
2017, we had friends at the concert

911- I worked in the travel industry at the time, the day the world changed forever

Paris attack- travelling home from a gig, heard the news on the radio

Queens death, I'm sure most people remember this one

Catsmere · 13/04/2024 23:53

September 11. Day after I quit my job. Was on the way to the vet and saw the headlines at the newsagent.

@DanielGault It was a good year I remember blur and prodigy being amazing.

It was indeed! I got the tickets as a surprise present for then boyfriend/ now husband. Getting a photo for the tickets involved setting up a fake party with randomers taking photos of him. He must have thought I was a right weirdo! But still together 😁

ToWhitToWhoo · 14/04/2024 01:41

Brexit referendum

Trump getting elected

Of all things to stick in one's memory forever: Sir Keith Joseph becoming Education Secretary in 1981! I knew he'd be a disaster and he was.

1997 election; especially my mum ringing at about 2 a.m. to tell me that Wimbledon, where she lived, had become a Labour gain!

Apollo 11 moon landing, when I was a kid.

Recently, the Queen's death and funeral, and the King's coronation.

shiningcuckoo · 14/04/2024 02:32

7/7 bombings
Manchester arena bombing

I don't remember seeing it on the news but I do recall walking around Torremolinos on holiday and seeing Madeline McCann missing posters.

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/04/2024 12:53

Ah yes Michael Jackson’s death, not a huge tragedy in the scheme of things but I was driving around the highlands of Scotland with dh with no phone or radio. We came across a garage that had one of those newspaper headlines things in the forecourt and I recall seeing “Jacko Dead” and us frantically trying and failing to tune in a radio station in the car. It’s very interesting how the way you hear about things has changed so much with technology. These days with SM almost everyone hears about the big stuff immediately
