ChedderGorgeous · 13/04/2024 15:53

When Cameron and the pig story came out. I was feeding pigs on a farm.

Yellowtrouser · 13/04/2024 15:56

911
Diana's death
Manchester Bombings - on a train on the way to Manchester on a school trip! Remember hanging about at Preston Station while the teacher phoned back to school for advice on what to do!

User884721 · 13/04/2024 15:57

9/11 I remember hearing at work. Then I went home and spent the afternoon and evening stripping wallpaper in my hallway listening to a radio station from New York giving info about public transport and where to go for help. Weird.

I was travelling for work and staying in a very 1970s style b&b when the concorde crash happened.

In a church hall at a Christmas choir rehearsal when the Lockerbie bombing happened. Someone had brought chocolates and juice to celebrate their birthday. While all those people died just 40 miles from where we were.

Death of Elvis. Mum came in crying. First person I remember dying.
Death of Princess Diana. I was in the bath and DP came in to to tell me. I insisted it was a hoax. 9/11 I was in the hairdresser and I'd never heard of the world trade centre and couldn't hear properly what people were saying because of the dryers. Got the bus home afterwards and a woman got on crying saying people were jumping off the building and her son worked there. Had to fetch DS from school early as they'd decided to close.

Hearing that the first test tube baby was born.

I was in a chemistry lesson stood near some actual test tubes. I often think about her.

9/11, had just landed in France for a year for college. Pre smart phone. Myself and my friend were wandering about the town trying to acquaint ourselves, there were still TV shops and they all seemed to be showing the same thing. It was only when I rang home later that I heard what had happened.

usernamedifferent · 13/04/2024 16:00

Dunblane - I was at school at the time and my mum was so upset when I got home, she hugged me really tight, I was a teenager.

Fred & Rose West murders - Again, I was at school and we’d be talking about how they’d found another body.

9/11 - I was in my first week as a newly qualified teacher. We were teaching in temporary classrooms that has no internet (wasn’t really a thing in schools back then) and so we didn’t find out until after school when another member of staff came to tell us and told us to come to the staff room so we could watch it on the tv in there. We all crowded round in disbelief.

7/7 - still teaching in the temporary classrooms but by now we had a small portable tv in our office bit so at breaktime we put the tv on.

Diana - I was upset barney was cancelled (I was four/five)
9/11 - due to go to London a few days later for my birthday
7/7 - at school and we got told the buses might not be running at the end of the day
Grenfell - at work watching the news on the screen
Queens death - at work and reading how all the royals were making their way to balmoral, we knew something had happened

hagchic · 13/04/2024 16:02

Dunblane
Death of Diana
9/11

SocksAndTheCity · 13/04/2024 16:02

I was painting my bedroom when Jo Whiley announced Kurt Cobain's death on Radio One, and watching Borsalino in bed in the same bedroom when the car crash with Diana was announced a few years later, although I didn't know she had died until the next morning.

Other news I woke up to: the Brexit result (I turned over and went back to sleep in the hope I'd dreamed it), Trump winning the 2016 election (ditto) and David Bowie's death. When the September 11th attacks came on TV I was round at my friends helping her colour her hair, and helping another friend move house the day of the Dunblane shootings.

9/11. I was at home with my new baby, sat on the settee feeding her when DH came home and told me - I had no idea.

7/7 was a bit of a shock, we had a friend trapped on a train in tunnel behind one of the attacked trains

Anewuser · 13/04/2024 16:04

The first one I remember was the murder of PC Yvonne Fletcher at the Iranian siege. We were shopping in Salisbury when local police were hailing and putting signs up trying to find her parents (who were also shopping there). No mobiles or social media in those days.

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/04/2024 16:04

Hillsborough. I have a friend who survived the crush. I was listening to the radio in my car at the time.

Ursulla · 13/04/2024 16:04

I remember when Shergar was stolen, it was so shocking. I used to walk past a field that had a horse in that looked just like him. They are all dead now, of course.

Cheepcheepcheep · 13/04/2024 16:04

7/7 - was on gcse study leave
Queen’s death - at centre parcs and it was very surreal
London Bridge attacks - but mostly because I was drinking in Farringdon and due to go home via London Bridge but it was my friend’s leaving to go abroad do, and she persuaded me and DH to have another. Got a bit into the timeline and worked out we’d have been walking across the bridge at the time. Bit weird.

Diana’s death (came downstairs to find my mum crying)

9/11 - off school so saw it all unfold on the news

7/7 - at work

2015 Paris attacks - at home

Grenfell Tower - in France

The discovery of Sarah Everard’s body - at home and burst into tears.

Andthereyougo · 13/04/2024 16:12

I was a very small child when JFK was shot and I can still remember the announcement on television. First saying he’d been shot then some time later that he had died. Can still remember what my mother said as she heard it too.
Also remember when Robert Kennedy was assassinated. Out on a walk and we’d gone into a shop to buy a drink. Radio was on.
When Elvis died. At home with small DC and trying to tidy as we had a buyer coming to see the house.
When John Lennon was murdered. In my car just driving into the car park at work.
When Diana died. Early morning news at home.
And remember being told off by my father for skipping along the hallway of our house on the day of Churchill’s funeral. I was being disrespectful apparently ( KS1 age)

JFK is about 20 years before I was born! Quite the thing to have lived through though I would imagine.
