Prostitute checked into our hotel!

Ok, so away in London for a couple of days with DH and DD (10). We were staying in a 4* Hotel which is part of a large chain of hotels, not a small independent. We went to reception about 10.30 on the 2nd morning and was met with a lady (who was very obviously a prostitute) being told her room would be ready in 5 mins and her handing over £100 in cash to the receptionist. The hotel is £250+ a night and check in is 3pm!

AIBU to this this made the hotel feel a bit icky and sleazy after I saw that? Husband and I spoke briefly when DD wasn’t listening and he said “well they have to work somewhere!”. Not sure if I’m turning into a prude in my old age, but I really didn’t feel comfortable in the hotel after I saw that. I’m sure for her, it was a safe and comfortable place to work and I know this goes on in hotels, I suppose just seeing it in broad daylight shocked me a bit. We knew what she was there for, the receptionist knew what she was there for, the man behind us in the queue knew what she was there for, maybe I thought she and the hotel should have been a bit more discreet if they allow this to go on in their hotel, especially when it’s a family friendly hotel and there were a lot of children around?

There's loads of legitimate daytime uses for hotel rooms. The crews on the overnight trains from London to Scotland use them to sleep during the day.

They are unlikely to be paying in cash.

But day use hotel rooms is a thing. It’s a good way for hotels to make more revenue on rooms where lots of people check out pre 9am and check in post 6pm. Plenty of legitimate reasons for it.

More likely to be someone having an affair than a sex worker. Wanting to avoid the hotel appearing on their bank statement.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 13/04/2024 19:02

Thinking about it I knew an ‘escort.’
She wore pretty normal clothes and was quite ordinary looking. She did look like she fake tanned and she had bleached hair but that accounts for many, many women the same age as she was.
When I say ordinary I mean you would not do a double take and think that woman is a prostitute.
I also know if 3 women who work on OF as sex workers ( or whatever the correct term is.)
2 are quite young. One was doing it from at least age 18 possibly before.
Again she is ‘ordinary’ in the fact that you would not think she is a sex worker. She is very thin and has the typical long hair and fake boobs.
The other 2 are quite individual looking. Think heavy make up and jet black hair.

When I have been in very dodgy red light areas the prostituted women do have a very stereotypical look. Bare legs, short skirt, high heels, low cut top, smoking.
It’s all very sad and the punters make me sick.

Very unusual for a hotel to even accept cash nowadays.

Most of them don't as they want card details incase of any damage.

I think the implication was that it was a backhander.

Bobbotgegrinch · 13/04/2024 19:05

You saw a woman check into a hotel. I'm sure the kids are going to be scarred for life.

MILTOBE · 13/04/2024 19:06

One of my friends at university got kerb crawled and asked how much she charged by a bloke one afternoon - she was wearing a duffle coat and carrying a bag of food shopping.

(Wave to EW if you're on here!)

Itstoopeopley4me · 13/04/2024 19:06

She is minding the business that pays her, might be useful for you to do the same.

Universalsnail · 13/04/2024 19:07

I think you are being unreasonable. Whatever she is doing it's got nothing to do with you. It's not happening in your room. Mind your own business and get on with your life.

Rosebel · 13/04/2024 19:08

Unless she was having sex in reception YABU. And you, the receptionist and the man behind you absolutely didn't know why she was there.
So judgemental and if that was why she was there you could try feeling so empathy. I doubt being a sex worker was her first career choice.
And so what if it's family friendly, does that mean no one can have sex in their own room?

Riapia · 13/04/2024 19:10

Obviously the OP is able to identify a prostitute.
Pay no attention to people on here OP.
Decent people go to 4 star hotels hoping to be among others of the same class.
Disgraceful.

boozeclues · 13/04/2024 19:10

YANBU.

All this bollocks about sex work is work etc etc. and how could you tell. I wouldn’t want to stay in a building where staff allowed vulnerable women to be exploited. It would give me the ick too.

The very vast majority of sex workers are trafficked and or are drug users. It’s very naive to think the contrary. Living in Leeds with the countries first “managed” red light district it’s painfully obvious who is a prostitute.

I don’t blame the women, but i would not feel
safe sleeping somewhere where there is the type of men who use prostitutes close by, they are rapists and not to be trusted anywhere near women, especially the OPs daughter.

Sweetheart7 · 13/04/2024 19:13

What we're you doing at the reception OP? At 10.30am in the morning? Other than nosing round at others facial expression at the "prostitute" 😂😂😂😂 I find it hard to believe.

ZoeCM · 13/04/2024 19:14

My mind is boggling at the thought of what this woman was wearing to make it "very obvious" that she was a prostitute. I'm picturing the episode of Friends where Rachel ends up wearing lingerie to a restaurant.

HRTQueen · 13/04/2024 19:15

How can anyone be shocked that hotel rooms are used by sex workers

I wouldn’t assume she was a sex worker but we all know it’s a thriving business

BIossomtoes · 13/04/2024 19:15

A prostitute’s clients wouldn’t be remotely interested in OP’s daughter. They’re hardly rapists if they’re paying good money for it.

soupfiend · 13/04/2024 19:16

greyonwhitesky · 13/04/2024 15:41

I use the term prostitute because I object to the term sex worker, which has been adopted for political reasons to make an inherently exploitative business seem mainstream. Trafficking and abuse of women iin prostitution is common. There has been research in countries were prostitution is fully legalized and ‘above board’ which has shown that the prostituted women there have as high, or higher, levels of disassociation from their own bodies than child sex abuse victims. And even for the small minority of high earning prostitutes who can choose a small number of clients they are safe with and freely do choose that work, I still object to prostitution as I have a strong principled objection to a society where men are able to buy intimate access to women’s bodies. That is something that I strongly believe no one should be able to purchase.

So away with your sneering about old fashioned. I’d rather have looked into and thought about issues and make my decisions based on that, rather than on what’s ‘fashionable’.

Competely this, you said it better than me

80smonster · 13/04/2024 18:04

Yup. It’s rather blinging isn’t it! The outfits are something to behold, especially on a Friday evening. Were you there over a weekend? Imagine that’s probably peak flow in terms of trashy vibes.

I can’t remember but probably. It was a long time ago though. I was quite excited to be going to such a ‘fancy’ hotel but couldn’t get past the horrible bathroom set up so my excitement soon went.

Famfirst · 13/04/2024 19:18

You are being horribly judgemental and unreasonable.

4 star means nothing. It only means you can afford a night there so stick your snobby comments about class elsewhere 🤭

Yeah, in front of absolutely everyone and the CCTV! 🤣🤦‍♀️

AmethystSparkles · 13/04/2024 19:20

The staff in a hotel once thought I was a prostitute. Actually I was a very autistic 28 year old who had to be out of the house while renovations were taking place. I was too scared to walk round the town on my own so I spent a few hours in a hotel bar that I was familiar with😳

I still wouldn’t want the type of man who used women for sex to be any where near a daughter of mine, never mind if they have already to paid shoot their load so wont notice her.

What an absolutely vile take.

THEY DONT VALUE WOMEN, any women, they think they are owed sex for currency. Appalling attitude.

Cherry8809 · 13/04/2024 19:21

I hope you overheard her room number, so you know where to find your DH later 🙃

Sapphireblueeyes · 13/04/2024 19:22

Do YOU have sex?

Best you keep out of shops, parks, streets and schools then.

In fact anywhere public.
