Was I wrong to egg the car?!

Simplepink · 13/04/2024 06:11

I stand by my convictions and don’t think I was wrong but interested to hear what other people think.
my husband thinks a note would’ve sufficed.

so we live right next to a public footpath which leads up to accommodation for lots of elderly people.

yesterday I noticed a car had blocked the entrance to this footpath which is clearly marked as to be kept clear at all times.
asked around neighbours, no one knew the cars owner.
waited a good couple of hours, person still hasn’t returned to car.
Many elderly people with walking aides struggling to get past. Anyone with a wheelchair wouldn’t be able to.

i had already left a note on the car but realised the owner would return, rumple up the note and not be slightly inconvenienced. . . . Sooo I egged the car windscreen. (Yes I know I’m clearly 12 years old/it’s a very minor criminal offence etc)
But my logic is that this person was therefore also mildly inconvenienced as retribution for their blasé attitude to others.

YABU to egg the car
YANBU to egg the car

(disclaimer this may be completely hypothetical and there’s no proof I am the neighbour who egged the car!)

OP, you didn't key their car or let the tyres down, you threw an egg at it. It's a minor inconvenience to clean it and they weren't worried about anyone they inconvenienced by parking there. I don't know whether I'd have done it or not, but I wouldn't be losing sleep over it if I did.

Needanewname42 · 13/04/2024 09:17

Op why did you not just call the police?
Give them a chance to do the job properly.

SerendipityJane · 13/04/2024 09:08

This is a weird comment given that the OP decided to sanctimoniously punish someone whose parking she dislikes - apparently on behalf of ‘elderly people’.

You mean the people no one else on this thread is thinking of ?

Let’s. It prop up the OP’s delusions that (in the words of emo legends - to ensure the correct level of hyperbole) she is ‘the saviour of the beaten, the broken and the damned’ by egging a car.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 13/04/2024 09:17

Of course YABU, YABVU.
Are you aware how hard it is to get egg off?
You sound very petty and/or slightly unhinged.

lemonmeringueno3 · 13/04/2024 09:19

Love all the other suggestions - notes, a quiet word, calling the police. On balance, the egg was better. No inconvenience for the police, some inconvenience for the perpetrator. If I parked my car stupidly, I'd absolutely think it was fair enough if I came back to an egg. I'd probably be pleased it wasn't something worse. I wouldn't park there again.

likepebblesonabeach · 13/04/2024 09:21

Also I am not the note writer. The egg thrower and the note writer are not necessarily the same person. Also I don’t think the police analyse notes stuck on car windscreens in large cities with high crime rates on their paltry budgets

@Simplepink but that's not the point if the police analyse notes or not.
You did something criminal that you feel you were right to do but you don't want to seem to be caught for doing it which sort of blows your "standing by your convictions" argument out the window.

lemonmeringueno3 · 13/04/2024 09:21

Gosh op some people seem really angry with you. They must be people who park thoughtlessly and rely on mugs letting them get away with it, or at worst delivering them a terse note.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 13/04/2024 09:21

I’ve frequently entertained myself with thoughts of how much it’d piss off my neighbour (who’s an abusive POS to his family) if I egged his car on one of the hottest days of the year. However I keep those thoughts in my head and don’t act on them because I’m an adult with no wish to end up with a criminal conviction. You better hope the car owner didn’t have any kind of dash cam or that there’s no cctv in the area. Maybe seek counselling too, egging someone’s car isn’t something people generally do, you seem to have cracked a bit, no pun intended.

Because it doesn't get the car moved.

If you can't get your car off your drive because it's blocked its an offence.

If you can't get your wheelchair off the drive because someone has blocked it, you are (actual quote) "Shit our of luck". Cars above chairs every time.

Parents like you and those agreeing with you are why so many children don’t know how to behave nowadays.

gould · 13/04/2024 09:40

Well I bet they won't park there again which is the desired result so it's a win

Somebody parked fully across my driveway once so I ran my house key fully across the bonnet

They didn't park there again

Exactly.

The one in the right here is the parent who parked like a twat and let their kids see them get away with it.

Abeona · 13/04/2024 09:45

The kind of CF who does that kind of thing isn't going to change their behaviour because of a note.

Having to clean up the mess left by an egg will focus their mind more than 100 notes. Well done, OP. No damage done but a clear signal sent.

Bloody hell. It’s amazing that you think this is something to boast about.

I think you did alright op. A bit childish maybe but as you say, they're not going to take any notice of a note. This might make them think twice about parking there - and they'll certainly remember it.

And it's hardly criminal damage - I had someone smash my wing mirrors once because they didn't like me parking NEAR their house (non- dropped curb, not directly in front of their driveway, public road). So really, this driver got off lucky!

It is criminal damage and so was snashing your mirrors

Also some disabilities wont have a blue badge if theyre temporary. What if (as in my own case) i have cancer and my husband has just had a stroke) their mobility is impaired and they just parked for a short while to do something?

Who made the OP judge and jury and could get off on making someones day shitter ?

Call the relevant authorities if you think there is an issue

MothralovesGojira · 13/04/2024 09:56

Egging it is a bit unreasonable as it does dry hard which could delay the car's departure. Otherwise, no, you're definitely not unreasonable.
I don't know if someone has mentioned the recent poster who 'larded' someone's car? They got a block of lard and scraped it all around the car and then drew a cock & balls across the windscreen. I was quite impressed and will keep the idea in my arsenal on how to deal with awkward neighbours.

orangebread · 13/04/2024 10:00

Yes, flour and water would have been much better. Maybe a bit of wallpaper paste?

Love the dog poo idea. That's a circular economy.

Save the eggs for breakfast.

Allshallbewell2021 · 13/04/2024 10:00

YABU

2 x wrongs don't make a right - as other people have mentioned.

Leaving the note explaining the impact of what they did so they might consider being more considerate next time. This is reasonable and might stop them doing it again which is the best outcome.

IME inconsiderate people are usually inadvertently inconsiderate; other people's needs do not even enter their minds.

I once waited in a car park with another family for over an hour as we were blocked in by massive jerk of an eejit with his huge attention seeking car.

He eventually lumbered past us and pulled out without a single look at us or apology. We were, naturally, completely silent (English) but if looks could kill.

Most people are all about me me me. They only behave well when they're brought up to behave well - it's learned behaviour.

But put a camera there and threaten them with a fine - then they will be suddenly considerate

Oncetwicethreetimesalady · 13/04/2024 10:01

Totally over the top response! You are being very unreasonable.
It might have been an elderly and/or disabled person who parked there because they needed to. You might imagine it’s some inconsiderate twat but there could have been a good reason. Even if there wasn’t, a polite but firm note would have been much more reasonable and much more effective.

lemonmeringueno3 · 13/04/2024 10:02

"Also some disabilities wont have a blue badge if theyre temporary. What if (as in my own case) i have cancer and my husband has just had a stroke) their mobility is impaired and they just parked for a short while to do something?"

OP said it was there for hours.

I think it's unlikely that it was parked there by kind, considerate people who just happened to be in a desperate pinch tbh.

I would expect someone dealing with such significant difficulties to be mindful of inconveniencing others who may be experiencing similar.

No, notes aren't effective at all. Don't imagine that they are suitably chastised. They laugh, chuck it and park similarly again.

Another egging thread

ToxicChristmas · 13/04/2024 10:04

A few years back now someone left a car in a crap spot in the village. You could get round it, but it was on a corner and blocking the path so anyone walking would have to step into the road to pass.
A few locals got the hump after hours of it not moving and let the tyres down (a "punishment" I don't get anyway as surely you want it moved ASAP). Anyway, next day it was discovered the owner had felt really sick while driving, had pulled over quickly, phoned a friend who had turned up and taken them to hospital as they looked so bad. Owner had a heart attack in hospital. Was ok, but obviously unable to rush back for the car. The friend turned up to take the car, was upset by the note and the flat tyres and knocked on a door to explain. I'm sure that the vast majority of these incidents are people being inconsiderate or lazy shits but there were a lot of people feeling bad in the village that day (although from the back peddling and excuses on the Facebook page you wouldn't think so).
Hopefully the bad parker won't do it again!
