Was I wrong to egg the car?!

Simplepink · 13/04/2024 06:11

I stand by my convictions and don’t think I was wrong but interested to hear what other people think.
my husband thinks a note would’ve sufficed.

so we live right next to a public footpath which leads up to accommodation for lots of elderly people.

yesterday I noticed a car had blocked the entrance to this footpath which is clearly marked as to be kept clear at all times.
asked around neighbours, no one knew the cars owner.
waited a good couple of hours, person still hasn’t returned to car.
Many elderly people with walking aides struggling to get past. Anyone with a wheelchair wouldn’t be able to.

i had already left a note on the car but realised the owner would return, rumple up the note and not be slightly inconvenienced. . . . Sooo I egged the car windscreen. (Yes I know I’m clearly 12 years old/it’s a very minor criminal offence etc)
But my logic is that this person was therefore also mildly inconvenienced as retribution for their blasé attitude to others.

YABU to egg the car
YANBU to egg the car

(disclaimer this may be completely hypothetical and there’s no proof I am the neighbour who egged the car!)

If the car was really bothering you, you could have asked the police to make contact with the driver. Perhaps the driver just didn't realise- say if there are no double yellow lines for instance. Is the signage real or has someone just put it there to try to keep the pathway clear?
And yes I think as an adult woman YABU to throw eggs. Littering, vandalism.. come on, you know this isn't on!
However, it's done now, you can't really do much about it.

clarepetal · 13/04/2024 08:52

You say that there were loads of other spaces..... two wrongs don't make a right, but I did laugh when I read this.
Good for you 👍

Not if it goes in my bin they won’t!

So you don't want to be traced for doing it?
Not really standing up for your beliefs then is it. If you really think what the driver did was so bad and your actions are justified you'd surely be happy to be held accountable for it

@GreenWheat ... I think you mean eggressive!

OP - really annoying but I see your reasoning. I'd maybe put the note on with flour and water if the rest of the road was clear to park on, or blocked them in somehow

So your solution to someone obstructing the pavement is to block them in so they can't move?

I didn’t do the littering! The car culprit was the litterer- they threw the notes in the bushes!

Also I am not the note writer. The egg thrower and the note writer are not necessarily the same person. Also I don’t think the police analyse notes stuck on car windscreens in large cities with high crime rates on their paltry budgets

You are unreasonable to egg the car now, it’s a waste of good egg because of all the rain. You should have waited for nice sunny weather instead, to bake it in.

Noseyoldcow · 13/04/2024 08:59

On the basis that a selfish idiot git who knowingly blocks a driveway/walkway or whatever is also likely to be idiotic enough to drive off without cleaning the egg mess off sufficiently for good visibility through the windscreen, you were wrong.

Dibbydoos · 13/04/2024 09:01

Call the local authority next time, they may be able to issue a parking fine.

The sanctimony on this thread is hilarious. There are not enough pearls in the world to clutch that would satisfy MN.

jeaux90 · 13/04/2024 09:03

Personally I think it was a smart move. They won't park there again.

Eggs? Egg shells. That's litter!

Riapia · 13/04/2024 09:04

You would only be unreasonable if you didn’t feel better for doing it.

SerendipityJane · 13/04/2024 09:04

Someone I know was unable to get to the bus stop because the only dropped kerb was blocked and they couldn't cross in a wheelchair. That was their day ruined.

Crack on OP (no pun intended).

BatteryPoweredPeacock · 13/04/2024 09:05

I am reminded of that John Finnamore sketch where someone parks to block a garage in. The garage owner comes along and is so grumpy that it lets the parker off the hook and they no longer feel bad about blocking them in.

That's what's happened here. Your reaction is such that you come out of it looking like the twit. Sorry OP.

This is a weird comment given that the OP decided to sanctimoniously punish someone whose parking she dislikes - apparently on behalf of ‘elderly people’.

Sanctimonious egging is a weird MNer oxymoron.

Lagoony · 13/04/2024 09:07

It's tempting to do such things bur you've made a lot.pf assumptions here too. What if the car belongs to a relative of one of the elderly, who had to rush over as they were told their telstive was ill and in their haste didn't park very well?

Marblessolveeverything · 13/04/2024 09:07

You do know there is a high possibility that there is now footage of you doing this?
Honestly my ten year old would have more sense.

Next time, Washing liquid capsule in a catapult...
The splat is satisfying... And, the driver gets a nice clean window... Well, eventually, after a lot of squirts and wiper actions.

Or, paintballs..

Whichever.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 13/04/2024 09:12

The only reason I would say YANBU was in case it had genuinely been abandoned in an emergency eg one of the elderly residents taking ill/ambulance. Apart from that, extreme, but actually on reflection good for you, serves em right!

Tbh my 10 year old does have more sense too and thought it “was a bit naughty mum”
I obviously told him to do as a say and not as I do. . .

Is no one ever allowed to make a mistake/be given benefit of doubt?

Its unlikely the driver drove up cackling like a witch thinking ‘I’m going to inconvenience an elderly person today.

For all you know it could have been an emergency, plain police car purposefully blocking the entrance OR maybe it is was an arsehole, either way note would have sufficed for a 1st offence.

The vengeful glee is icky to me.
