Was I wrong to egg the car?!

Simplepink · 13/04/2024 06:11

I stand by my convictions and don’t think I was wrong but interested to hear what other people think.
my husband thinks a note would’ve sufficed.

so we live right next to a public footpath which leads up to accommodation for lots of elderly people.

yesterday I noticed a car had blocked the entrance to this footpath which is clearly marked as to be kept clear at all times.
asked around neighbours, no one knew the cars owner.
waited a good couple of hours, person still hasn’t returned to car.
Many elderly people with walking aides struggling to get past. Anyone with a wheelchair wouldn’t be able to.

i had already left a note on the car but realised the owner would return, rumple up the note and not be slightly inconvenienced. . . . Sooo I egged the car windscreen. (Yes I know I’m clearly 12 years old/it’s a very minor criminal offence etc)
But my logic is that this person was therefore also mildly inconvenienced as retribution for their blasé attitude to others.

YABU to egg the car
YANBU to egg the car

(disclaimer this may be completely hypothetical and there’s no proof I am the neighbour who egged the car!)

I've never understood the logic of "punishing" someone for parking badly by making it more difficult for them to move the car.... gluing notes on, letting down tyres, blocking them etc. Surely you want them gone?

Do you know what chickens go through to make an egg

What do they go through? I’ve had chickens and it just seemed a natural process tbh, i didn’t ‘force’ them to lay eggs, they just did. I’m taking it UK is free range (I don’t live there, unfortunately they still allow caged here but everyone I know who doesn’t have their own buys ethical free range as opposed to free range claim where it’s technically a correct claim but shocking density rates).

It’s exactly the same here. Really sad, awful conditions for industrial egg production even when they’re labelled free range.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 13/04/2024 07:45

It would be an impetuous thing to do and unwise, but I can certainly see the temptation - people are so selfish.

When I had to take the tube to and from work, I used to fantasise about taking stink bombs and throwing them through the open doors of the carriages where people clogged the doorways and refused to move down to let others on. Would never have done it though.

YeahComeOnThen · 13/04/2024 07:51

I'm glad you've had a think abut it & realise it was stupid & pointless.

It doesn't help that you can't (in my area anyway) report anything in real time unless it's an emergency.

I think I'd just leave a note explaining what an utter cunt they were being. (Without actually writing those words).

i wouldn't egg anything

You risk damaging property

its a waste of food (if you can afford to waste food, donate to food banks instead those eggs could have fed a child)

I don't know how to word this, but chickens exist in battery 'cages' to produce eggs (it's disgusting) & then you totally disrespect them by wasting their eggs. I know it's the same for the chickens whether you eat it or waste it, but it feels so disrespectful

purpleme12 · 13/04/2024 07:53

I take a dim view of anyone who chooses to egg property

Maddy70 · 13/04/2024 07:53

Egging is criminal damage

Its a ridiculous overreaction and egg sometimes causes permanent damage to a car

You could just have called the traffic warden if you were so concerned

AgnesX · 13/04/2024 07:58

Hope the eggs were off 🥚🐣

Wrong to waste eggs in this way.

I'd just assume that the car driver has an undeclared sight problem and report them to the DVLA. Hopefully even if in a few months the DVLA did something, it would cause them far more grief than an egg on the windscreen.

Absolute peak mumsnet 😂

HuminaHuminaHumina · 13/04/2024 08:00

I think I behaved rashly although not badly

I think you’re wrong.

NarnianQueen · 13/04/2024 08:01

I think you did alright op. A bit childish maybe but as you say, they're not going to take any notice of a note. This might make them think twice about parking there - and they'll certainly remember it.

And it's hardly criminal damage - I had someone smash my wing mirrors once because they didn't like me parking NEAR their house (non- dropped curb, not directly in front of their driveway, public road). So really, this driver got off lucky!

Sparkle88K · 13/04/2024 08:02

Weird thing to do!
The owner may of had an emergency or just didn't realise they had parked somewhere they shouldn't.
Imagine if they were disabled or returned with young children & had to try & clean dried egg off the windscreen of their car & find it possibly damaged.
It's quite dangerous really.
I understand they shouldn't park there, but you can't go round throwing eggs at cars. Go clean it off.

Bookworm1111 · 13/04/2024 08:04

How juvenile. I’m with your DH, it was a totally unnecessary response. Let’s hope it wasn’t a worried relative making an emergency bedside dash to one of the elderly residents, eh? Yes they left the car badly parked but maybe they just dumped it in a panic?

GreatGateauxsby · 13/04/2024 08:05

Simplepink · 13/04/2024 06:42

No I wouldn’t do it again. On reflection I think I behaved rashly although not badly. (hypothetically of course)

i think the person who suggested allowing someone to reflect on a note is far more sensible.

But I know a lot of the people who go up and down the footpath, elderly people, people with disabilities and it is so frustrating that people inconvenience others without a second thought.

I do hope the owner of the car wasn’t having a bad time personally.

I believe so far I stand corrected!

Wtf

this is just not a normal response 😅

Am i the only one wondering if the car belonged to an elderly disabled person???
who was probably mildly terrified to find their car vandalised

GinAndJuice99 · 13/04/2024 08:06

I've voted YABU because you should have keyed it

Astariel · 13/04/2024 08:07

Your poor husband must be absolutely mortified and wondering if he married a wayward teenager.

Especially since, in doing it, you’re painting yourself as the saviour of all the elderly people etc.

Vigilanteism mixed with crap teenage pranks is not a good look.

In which case, you are even worse than the OP. Maybe seek help and find better ways of resolving situations that retributive vandalism.

To show you what your free range egg providers really look like? | Mumsnet

That's all. Rescued a dozen ladies this weekend, ex-free range chicken farm hens. The photo shows the rest. Vile trade.

mitogoshi · 13/04/2024 08:08

No you shouldn't but also crucially is the gap to the footpath marked no parking? We have one here and the council haven't put yellow lines and no dropped kerb because there's no pavement therefore whilst it's inconsiderate to block it, nothing on the road indicates no parking

Wolfpa · 13/04/2024 08:09

Do you often overreact to minor inconveniences? There are so many other avenues you could have gone down.

ShiteRider · 13/04/2024 07:44

I mean if OP reared her own chickens or knows they are perfectly happy well looked after chickens then fine I guess it's just like they've done a poo. But I doubt it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/04/2024 08:10

This is not a normal response from an intelligent adult. If you actually did this you are clearly in need of help. Seek out other, more constructive, ways of dealing with challenges in life!

Bookworm1111 · 13/04/2024 08:12

Also, best hope there was no CCTV in the vicinity if they decide to report the vandalism. The tabloids love a good “do you recognise this egg-throwing Karen who damaged my car” story!

Janetime · 13/04/2024 08:14

What am I reading, what adult does this?

unless you’ve got additional needs op and there is a back story here, this is odd and cringe.

Coconutter24 · 13/04/2024 08:14

“i had already left a note on the car but realised the owner would return, rumple up the note and not be slightly inconvenienced.”

So you left a note then you assumed what would happen and took different action without giving the driver chance to see the note? Yeh the driver shouldn’t have parked there obviously but yes you did behave badly. Are you a bit of a busybody generally because that’s what you sound like. How mortifying that would of been if any of your neighbours were to of seen you acting so childish
