When did it become a thing to bring your dog to other peoples houses ?!

DH & I bought a house last year & have been really enjoying having friends / family over - but I’m getting soooo fed up of people asking / assuming their dog is invited too!!

I spent all of last Saturday cleaning my house & then friends bought their dog along so I had to reclean the whole house the next day to get rid of all the dog hair etc. I even found dog hair in my bed the next day 😱

We even had a friend who bought some manky sausages & asked us to cook them for the dog!!! I was trying not to gag.

I’ve started trying to say no, but find people take it soo personally if you don’t embrace their dog too. We’ve also had friends say they can’t leave the dog so would have to cancel (an hour before they were due to arrive) so I feel like my hand is being always being forced.

Has this always been a thing ??!! AIBU to think it’s rude and you should leave your pets at home.

Huh? It's the cats home! Of course it's OK for the cat to be here. Ffs.

I mean why are cats ok in a house generally ? I find they shed more.

Why did you need to put ffs?

Screamingabdabz · 11/04/2024 19:46

I vote YABU because you are at fault here. You have allowed dogs into your house.

Not a single dog would be allowed through our front door under any circumstances and whoever they were. You just say no. That’s it. The humans are welcome, but the dog will have to stay in the car or the garden if they bring it.

Act like a door mat and don’t be surprised when people walk all over you.

I have 4 cats, all of them combined don't shed as much as my collie

Seasonofthesticks · 11/04/2024 19:48

I leave my Labrador at home unless they know and like her and want her to come.

Yes I suppose a collie would shed a lot.

But cats - esp long haired ones - make me really sneeze.

It's not so much the hair, as the dander. Which cats spread far more effectively than dogs due to the amount of licking they do. Plus they get to places a dog can't get to.

I aren't remotely allergic to either but I have a friend who is so allergic to cats she has to have a antihistamine before she sees me!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/04/2024 19:57

I always check with friends if it's okay to bring the dog but tbh I wouldn't take the dog to a pet free house or to a friends house if meeting for coffee.

It's very rude to turn up with a dog without checking it's okay first.

What a weird question. I prefer cats. I don't have the lifestyle for a dog, I like dogs, but I prefer to have cats around.

Yes. I completely understand why people might love to have pets, or not like them; but I can never get to the bottom of the view some people have that cats are fine but dogs are somehow outrageous because I am like your friend and find cats impact a house more.

Most people don't tend to take their cats round other peoplea houses. So it only impacts the cat owners house and life.

Cats don't tend to be boisterous, smelly, or imposing though do they. Especially if you're not used to them. If you took a cat to someone's house 9 out of 10 of them would dart off and hide somewhere

It's not just about impacting the house. I like cats, I'm meh about dogs. My cats impact on my home is fine by me as I love them. Someone else's dog impacts my house more, to me, as they're not my beloved pet.

NorthernMouse · 11/04/2024 20:12

It’s always been a thing but it didn’t used to be that everyone (every man and his dog) had a dog.

When I was a child in the 70s/80s none of our friends or neighbours had dogs (only elderly neighbours with little yappy things). However my country cousins did have dogs and always brought them to our house when visiting - huge dogs in our tiny terraced house where there wasn’t even room for the visitors let alone the dogs, even as a 5 year old I didn’t understand that.

If I was you I’d get cats, then dogs aren’t allowed to come round (plus you have cats, bonus). Or just say no dogs.

@Calliopespa

Because it's their cat and it lives there?

No I was meaning more generally. Why do some people think cats are ok but not dogs. It’s just a genuine question not barbed.

fungipie · 11/04/2024 20:17

Caspianberg · 11/04/2024 16:45

Just say no. Say no every time, and they won’t keep asking.
I don’t let any dog in our house, a) we have a cat b) Ds is allergic c) I just don’t want dogs in my house.

of course you can just say no- easy.

But friendships may well be compromised- and you may end up with few friends and few relatives happy to visit you or to invite you. If that is ok with you, fine.

2proseccosplease · 11/04/2024 20:22

Our dogs go where we go, but we do check it's ok at the time of invitation.

If we don't bring them, we have to find someone to look after them and add an extra 1-2 hours into our journey transporting them or pay the dog sitter £50 for the day.

If dogs aren't welcome that is absolutely fine and the inviters prerogative, but there's a strong chance we won't accept the invite.

We do often host to avoid the issue. All dogs are welcome.

Mammyloveswine · 11/04/2024 20:35

The only dog allowed in my house is my sisters dog and that's only cos we sometimes look after her when they go away. She's a cockapoo and lovely and my sister always checks before she comes round in case I've had carpets deep cleaned or if asd son is having a moment.

Generally others don't bring their dogs round no.

cakewitch · 11/04/2024 20:51

What is wrong with dog owners these days?? How is it that its become completely unthinkably cruel to leave your dog alone for even a couple of hours while you just get on with your life.? Since when did they start to be treated like children and absolutely be accepted everywhere? I was at B&q the other day and a dog was wandering round, off the lead, while it's owner was browsing the aisles nonchalantly oblivious. Do not get me wrong, I love dogs, and if I was home more, I'd love one, but I certainly would not expect everyone to love my dog as much as me, and for it to be accepted everywhere.

2024namechange · 11/04/2024 21:02

I actually think it’s rude to ask as well as assume.

Asking puts the askee in the awkward position of having to say no and they might end up agreeing even though they would rather not.

I won’t allow dogs in my house. I like to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and DH is allergic and hair everywhere would affect him for days. I would allow docile dogs to remain in my garden if it were a deal breaker for attending my home.

theonlygirl · 11/04/2024 21:08

Probably about the same it became acceptable to take them to the pub at every hour of the day and night.
Pub lunch the other week, felt like I was actually in a doggy daycare. toddlers in the middle of it all. only gonna end in tears.

SwordToFlamethrower · 11/04/2024 21:17

Absolutely no way. A dog is not a child. Say no to the CF!!!

Flossflower · 11/04/2024 21:20

Yes, it just seems that people have to take their dogs with them everywhere these days. Is it because they haven’t trained them properly? Surely you can visit and leave your dog in the car with the window open. Just take it for a walk after a couple of hours. I do not allow dogs in my home, but fortunately I don’t have many friends with dogs.
Honestly, I know someone getting married and a wedding guest asked if they could bring their dog!

livelovelough24 · 11/04/2024 21:32

I have a dog but never bring her anywhere with me, even to people who also have dogs. I attended a birthday party once of a colleague of mine. She lived in a tiny one bedroom apartment but had invited a huge crowd of people. One of them brought in her dog. It was a huge dog, a puppy still, so full of energy and she ran around the whole time creating chaos. I do not get how people can be so inconsiderate.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/04/2024 21:46

Pheasantsmate · 11/04/2024 17:46

maybe, but no one has tried to change a dogs nappy on my cream carpet or feed it a yogurt on my sofa!!!🙈

The only people I know who take their dog uninvited to my house also change their children's nappies on my carpet so I'm saying there is definite CF overlap there.
