DD went to Cream Dream ( I know !) Cafe in London today ( she had a fabulous cake ) and was sitting next to a celebrity - Male, 50 + ish,, in a houndstooth jacket, wide trousers and a pink beret. other people asked for a photo, and apparently he was really nice to them, so we know it was someone famous, but who ????

AIBU to ask you all to help work out who it might have been ? ( sorry shoe horned into AIBU as I was hoping for a quick answer !)

Nigel Farage is only 60.

Absolute proof that you get the face you deserve.

Ouch ! Really? Still he might look good at 90. Formaldehyde.

luckylavender · 11/04/2024 11:03

I saw Bowie on the Let's Dance Tour in Paris in 1983 with Dexys in support. Roland spent the whole set slagging Bowie off. They were pulled the next night. Have always hated him since. V unprofessional.

I once saw the actor from Stike wearing a white beret and odd clothes.

Farage has the temerity to be younger than me whilst espousing views that are ye olde school of boomer brexiteer badness. Me no likey.

But, I forgive Bill Bailey for being younger because he’s much nicer 😂

I hope they edit the title for you.

This thread is a classic example of people not reading the OP's updates. I suspect it will feature as an example on the next 'what annoys you about mumsnet?' post! Smile

I worked in a bank in central Birmingham late 90's early noughties and spoke to him on the phone once about his account. Of course the conversation soon moved to discussing Dexy's. He was so lovely and easy to talk to.

@WhatsTheUseOfWorrying it's one of the best TOTP howlers ever!!!

Yes I'm older than both too. Bill can be a Brexiter because he is so nice in general. There's no logic to it I know!

Actually, I really just want to know if the cakes in Cream Dream are as delicious as they look on their instagram.

They are... DD brought a box home ( together with her conundrum) and they were great - Coeliac friendly too

He wore a pastel pinkish beret, the kind you find in a second hand store....

He wasn't much of a celebrity if he wasn't recognised.

I never recognise anyone. I once cheerily shouted ‘hi Terry!‘ at a very unimpressed boy George (he saw me peering at him and started preening waiting for an adoring fan but I thought he was a friend of my sister).

I told mick jagger to bugger off when he stepped backwards into me in the video shop and squished me (he didn’t apologise hence the rude response).

I commented to my friend that the lady waiting to cross the road alongside us was a tad overdressed (Lulu).

I have a whole day with a colleague (granted I’d never met her and only met her predecessor twice briefly) calling her the name of the woman she’d taken over from. They did look a bit similar and I had to travel to another office to go through some files with her. She never corrected me - even through the penny must’ve dropped fairly quickly.

yeah I’m great for recognising my people ‘in the flesh’

Freetodowhatiwant · 11/04/2024 15:44

I immediately thought Kevin Rowland so I am glad I was right! He’s my Facebook friend. A lovely man he seems too.

BathshebaEverdene1 · 11/04/2024 15:57

Oh him from Dexy's? He has travelled well i must say..

Joey Barton?

Don’t think he’s known for being pleasant tbh.

Scarfitwere · 11/04/2024 17:56

Sir Ian McKellen?

yawnanotherone · 11/04/2024 18:03

I love this story! My favourite thing about living in London is finding myself beside an 80s icon in random places. Best examples - Marc Almond having lunch in Table in southwark and Terry Hall pushing a buggy in Islington. I miss Terry Hall 😢

70sdisco24 · 11/04/2024 18:12

I love Kevin Rowland and Dexy’s. I had a friend who went out with him back in the ‘80s. I wouldn’t have thought he was the pink beret type!

DisabledDemon · 11/04/2024 18:13

But surely, the question is, did the pink beret suit him?

oldsoulrebel · 11/04/2024 18:39

Still making amazing music . Thoroughly recommend Dexys' latest album - The Feminine Devine. Huge fan here ( hence the user name)
