To want a female only dorm in a bunkhouse?

Im doing a long walk next month in the highlands of scotland. Accomodation is limited to hostels and bunkhouses in some locations. Apparently they are no longer able to ask your gender so all rooms in the bunkhouse I am staying are unisex.

I've asked to be put in with another female and been told the other bunk is booked but because of gdpr they can't tell me if I am sharing with a male or female.

Is this not completely bonkers? Am I being unreasonable to want to know who is going to be in the same room as me while im sleeping or is this just normal and the risk you take?

I'm perplexed and a bit stressed about it.

Go on to Hostelworld. They have female only dorms in properties all over Scotland.

Are they genuinely female only?

I was thinking from the name they could tell but maybe not

So you’d happily sleep in a dorm with Susan and her 7” schlong but not Dave and his?

You need to only use SEX in your communications. GENDER includes anyone identifying, not biological.

Enjoy your hike! I did the WHW about 15 years ago and loved it. Currently have a foot problem that's holding me back from long distance walks, but if/when that gets better it'd be on my bucket list to return to it.

I would be a bit concerned about that, especially if only two people. I travelled in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia when much younger. Several mixed dorm/room scenarios, but with multiple people. Nothing bad happened but I was always very wary.

Just wanted to add a wee update the reason I didn't book a room to myself to begin with was the weird booking process! I tried selecting 2 bunks but apparently you have to select 1 bunk but add an extra room? After I booked I emailed straight away and the reply was they couldn't give me the other bunk. All a bit weird!
Anyway I've managed to get a pod at glencoe on a cancellation so I plan to stay there instead 😊

When I was a daft 18 year old, I would have said "what's the big deal." Now that I'm 51, there is no way I would sleep in the same room with a man who was a stranger to me.

Well I consider myself a daft 20 year old, but I wouldn't sleep in the same room as a man - well, unless he was MY man. I'd cancel and tell them why. I don't know whether I'm going to be considered a prude (if I am, it'll be the 1st time) but sharing a room with a ma - O K., somebody with a p - is not my idea of a good night's sleep!

That's what I thought but that was the answer I got plus they said they can't ask gender x

Who cares about gender, it's the other person's sex which matters. I wouldn't worry so much about sharing with Steve if he'd been born Sarah.
