AIBU that DH and I are too sick to eat McDonalds ?

DH and I are driving 6 hours to spend a week with his parents to help them with the house, medical appointments, etc. We were too sick to travel yesterday but have to go today as we have the plumber coming (to his parents') first thing tomorrow.

Typically when we do this trip without the DC* we stop for a McDonald's when we wee and change drivers. It's like a little treat before we spend a week of DIY, cleaning, etc. DH loves McDonald's, but otherwise we eat home cooked food.

AIBU to be a bit sad that we are both too ill to eat today, esp. as the drive will be a bit of a struggle / more tiring given that we're both feeling a bit crap?

*DC don't really like McDo and get hungry about 90 minutes into the journey then fall asleep so we bring a picnic instead (we are not secretly eating fast food and depriving them.)

No, we have travelling food, stop off rituals and I would be sad if I was too ill to do mine. I look forward to it, it's part of the trip.

OolongTeaDrinker · 07/04/2024 13:25

If you are both too ill to eat, you really shouldn’t be doing a long drive anyway. Lack of food could make the driver feel faint, and aren’t you worried about passing it on to your in-laws and the plumber?

fieldsofbutterflies · 07/04/2024 13:27

If you're that unwell, surely you shouldn't risk getting his elderly parents sick?

PrincessFionaCharming · 07/04/2024 13:29

Ah you are going to get piled on because people are hysterical (and unrealistic) about crossing the door when sick these days.

But I’m always sad when I don’t have McDonalds so yanbu for me.

IdealHomeExhibition · 07/04/2024 13:30

Yabu that you are driving that distance and visiting elderly people if you are too sick for a,mcdonalds

It’s not really hysterical pointing out if someone is too ill to even eat, they probably shouldn’t be doing a long drive or visiting elderly relatives who are presumably vulnerable heath-wise. I’m assuming that is the case because of the level of support that is needed, eg. They are not able to deal with a plumber’s visit themselves 🤷🏻‍♀️

DontGetYourTitsInATwist · 07/04/2024 13:40

I'd have to be at death's door to be too sick for McDonald's, so I vote YABU

KeepingItUnderTheRadar · 07/04/2024 13:41

I can't imagine what kind of illness makes you too ill to eat but suitable to drive for several hours tbh.

gamerchick · 07/04/2024 13:44

Man that sucks. Having to do all that driving with a lurgy that you might pass on. Might be worth stocking up on stuff for the in-laws if they catch it. You must both be feeling like utter crap, i'm sorry man.

Get one on the way back. Victory McDonalds.

Caspianberg · 07/04/2024 13:46

Yeah surely you need to stop anyway? 6hrs is a long drive without a wee.

Just stop there anyway. Buy a coffee or a cold drink, use loo, take 20 min break. Get a snack if you feel like it

5128gap · 07/04/2024 13:46

If you're ill and driving you need to eat. Unless there's some reason you can't face McD, then have it as usual. It's high calorie immediate energy, soft and effortless to consume and as good as anything else to keep you going. If you can't face it, pencil it on as a treat for as soon as you feel better.

Me neither.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/04/2024 13:56

Use a drive through?

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 07/04/2024 13:57

Reschedule the plumber and go a day or two later.

TheSnowyOwl · 07/04/2024 13:58

If you are that ill you shouldn’t be driving or looking after/infecting others.

FawnFrenchieMum · 07/04/2024 14:01

Doesnt make sense to me as McDs is my comfort go to food when ill. Stodge that lines the stomach. If I couldn’t eat Maccies, I couldn’t drive an hour let alone six.

Meganmeccano · 07/04/2024 14:40

Neither of us is contagious.

I am feeling much better today, but stomach a bit delicate hence no McDs, so for now I am driving. Yes, we will stop every 2 hours as usual, and yes we have both eaten bland food, we wouldn't drive on an empty stomach.

Surely Maccies would dampen your recovery..
? 😷

Candleabra · 07/04/2024 14:44

Delicate stomach? Tummy bug or something else? How do you know you’re not contagious?

I hope your journey is ok as you’ve already decided to go, but I certainly wouldn’t be doing a six hour drive to elderly parents if I felt unwell.

Nudgethatjudge · 07/04/2024 14:47

Promise yourselves one on the way home. Then next month plan a not-going-anywhere trip that takes you to a McDonald's to 'replace' the one you missed out on.

I get the rituals of travel.
Mine is to do a cryptic crossword whilst DP drives. But on our long journey on Friday I'd forgotten to double check my crossword book is in the car - he got a new car a few months ago and not replaced what he calls my "junk" back in. I really missed it.

Something else that isn't contagious, as I said.

Oh no! Could you buy a new book on the way?

Hangover? Otherwise, you can't possibly tell you're not contagious.

Agreed. Even if it was food-poisoning, could easily be norovirus which is definitely contagious.

If it's a hangover then one wonders what the purpose was in starting an entire thread to ask strangers about eating McDonalds when they were simply too smashed to travel.
