“What” is better English than “pardon”.

”What did you say?” or ”could you repeat that?” Is better English still.

it depends how it's said. "Pardon" does seem a bit twee though I grew up being told to use that instead of "what" but now I seem to always say "sorry, what did you say?" or "sorry I missed that" or if with very close friends I'll go for a succinct "wait, what?"

Can we have a class topic? It’ll probably be the busiest on the site - filled with Hyacinths trying desperately to appear to be a class they definitely aren’t because the Upper Classes are apparently just better people.
