i went to 5 different schools, inc a private boarding school.
if i'd said, 'what?' to any of the teachers, i'd have got an order mark. and that was serious.

I grew up in a rough part of East London, no one ever said pardon. 'What' was common place, as was 'you fucking what', which usually preceded some kind of aggression/violence or hearty laughter

I feel “what” on its own can be a bit rude, depending on tone used. I’ll usually say “sorry didn’t catch that”.

From the perspective of this prole, the LMC always looks kind of joyless and striving, all conservatories and Quooker taps and worrying about the children’s ‘extracurriculars’.

I just cannot bring myself to say ‘What?’ if I don’t hear someone. To me, it is so rude! My children have been told the same 😱
