Or is that rude?

Not really. I do say both napkin or serviette. I never say couch but I say sofa or settee and living room not lounge. What does that say about me!?

Edited

Living room is akin to toilet. And pardon.

And you can't say napkin and serviette. Serviette denotes you.

I take it from this thread that’s not a good thing 😆

Depends on your position.

'What' is really rude! I say pardon or what was that, sorry? Or even just 'sorry?' with a puzzled look.

absolutely !
i went to 5 different schools, inc a private boarding school.
if i'd said, 'what?' to any of the teachers, i'd have got an order mark. and that was serious.

desperatedaysareover · 06/04/2024 20:43

Lounge is giving ‘Abigail’s Party.’

Oh dear. Not a very good boarding school, then.

TotalDramarama24 · 06/04/2024 20:43

I was always taught that pardon sounded subservient and we were to say sorry or what.

I’d better stick to serviette from now on then!

No, don't do that.

Isthisexpected · 06/04/2024 20:45

I would say pardon? (as in, I beg your pardon I didn't catch what you said?)

not "pardon (me I've burped in your face).

What (did you just say?) is rude to me.

Afraidofthedarke · 06/04/2024 20:45

Geebray · 06/04/2024 20:44

No, don't do that.

See, I don’t know which is ‘better’ now. This is a whole new world to me!

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 06/04/2024 20:46

I grew up in a rough part of East London, no one ever said pardon. 'What' was common place, as was 'you fucking what', which usually preceded some kind of aggression/violence or hearty laughter

It is great to be lower middle class. Embrace it!

youngones1 · 06/04/2024 20:47

Pardon is such a common word, much like toilet and settee.

CleaningSticks · 06/04/2024 20:48

‘What did you say?’ or ‘sorry, what did you say?’

’what?’ just sounds too rude/(LMCtrying to sound UMC 😂)

Meant to say, never ever say serviette. Or any french sounding fancy word.

Napkin, not serviette
What not pardon
Loo not toilet

2Old2Tango · 06/04/2024 20:49

I feel “what” on its own can be a bit rude, depending on tone used. I’ll usually say “sorry didn’t catch that”.

From the perspective of this prole, the LMC always looks kind of joyless and striving, all conservatories and Quooker taps and worrying about the children’s ‘extracurriculars’.

bradpittsbathwater · 06/04/2024 20:50

I would put them at middle class.

I just cannot bring myself to say ‘What?’ if I don’t hear someone. To me, it is so rude! My children have been told the same 😱

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 06/04/2024 20:51

Where I grew up, people say "Please?"
