To want a breakfast buffet at home

UnmitigatedAssholen · 06/04/2024 07:42

I want to wake up every morning and come down to a table laid with random things, like slices of cheese, pineapple juice, apple compote, muesli, iced water, yoghurt, coffee, hot chocolate, and just kind of start my morning by picking at this and that. But how do I get around the fact that I don't want to get it all out/prepared?

I'm going to have to hire staff, aren't I?

A couple of ‘home kitchen’ type of businesses local to me do cold breakfast buffet boxes to order. Pastries, waffles, fresh fruit, mini pot of yoghurt and granola. I’m surprised supermarkets don’t do these to be honest.

Speaking of waffles, I got a box of frozen ones and you just pop them in the toaster for a couple of minutes and they’re pretty decent. I was actually thinking of breakfast buffets this morning whilst eating instant porridge.

Well, I've decided on Monday I am going to have a travelodge breakfast, will report back.
Tonight I'm going to prep my own Sunday hotel breakfast buffet at home, and will have:

  • Orange juice
  • A weird juice (probably cranberry)
  • Muesli
  • Yoghurt
  • Spanish omelette
  • Pre-baked pastries
  • Sliced cheese
  • Coffee
  • Hot chocolate
  • Rhubarb compote (will make today)
  • Water with lemon and ginger

Get yourself some teabags in little paper packets too. Pukka and Yogi both do them.

Don't forget to only provide shot glasses for your juice to necessitate multiple trips to the juice station to get a decent sized drink.

Also on the juice topic, I think you need at least 3 to enable juice mixing. I like a cranberry/orange mix myself. Bonus points for watermelon juice which is the holy grail at a buffet.

A few weeks ago I had double ordered some lemons so had some in my black tea with a squirt of honey as served in the US. Going to see if I have any lurking in the back of the fridge…

mondaytosunday · 06/04/2024 10:25

Ooo I'd love this! Breakfast is my favourite meal (though at home I stick to the same one every day) and love those hotel buffets. Yes, staff! I'd love an invisible entity to lay it out then clean it up! Can we make it all calorie free to? And clean every other bit of the house?

When I was young and visited my grandparents, every Sunday my grandad would do this.

From bacon & egg sandwiches, to toast, to cereal and fruit. It was amazing. I miss it so much.

That's a lovely memory to have.

Maybe you could join me with your own Sunday buffet?

OMG pastries, how could I forget!!! I could get some frozen pains au chocolat and bake them the night before

Tesco do packs of already baked, mini assorted pastries, they’re delicious!

If you live anywhere near a premier inn, you can book their breakfast without staying. Not an everyday option obviously but an occasional treat. We’ve done it when camping.

Are there always hoardes of children running about unsupervised?
Only been once and won't do it again.

@UnmitigatedAssholen

I used to go and stay for two or three nights at a health spa (sadly closed down since Covid) and really be pampered.

One of the many things I liked about it was breakfast (my favourite meal). Buffet with softly scrambled eggs, baked ham off the bone, properly cooked mushrooms, finely sliced juicy smoked salmon, home made yoghurts plain or fruited, bowls of stewed or baked fruit, lovely fresh bread, pot of tea or hot cocoa, lovely butter, lovely fruit juices etc etc I felt I'd earned it as I woke early, had a bit of a swim or sauna or whirlpool bath. Then gentle exercises or massage, or other treatment from mid morning after I'd read the paper. I do miss that place!! 🌹

It doesn't have to be loads of work on the morning......

  1. Bulk make scotch pancake batter and freeze
  2. Take out jar night before to defrost - takes very little effort tp fry a few next morning.... have you got kids you could recruit to it? My 7 year old cooks mine for me...
  3. Use airfryer to do sausages and boiled eggs with minimal fuss (again, can a DC help)
  4. Buy bags of posh granola and tubs of yeo valley yoghurt (DC can set up)
  5. Buy punnets of berries
  6. Have you got a breadmaker? If not, get one. Fresh warm bread waiting for you in morning.

I'd pay my DC to get up and prep it 15 mins before i go down.....

SkyBloo · 06/04/2024 11:31

Oh yeah and the frozen pastries - all the supermarkets do those. They are good

I would actually do this twice a week! Do you pay guest prices on the breakfasts?

Otherwise maybe I could hire someone local and give them say 50 quid a week to come and lay breakfast for me, hover in the kitchen, and then clear it away. Talk about an indulgence 🤣

We just did this today on the way to holidays! It’s 10.95 per adult but all under 16s are free!

Shufflebumnessie · 06/04/2024 12:04

I love breakfast, best meal of the day!
A holiday in a hotel with a good breakfast buffet is almost as good as the holiday itself!! I still We stayed in a hotel in London that had orange segments with all the pith removed completely - absolutely amazing, I've never eaten so many oranges in my life!!

If I was ridiculously rich I'd employ a chef to prepare a fabulous breakfasts - fruit platters, mini Croissants & pain au chocolate, fresh pancakes & waffles etc. I'd also need a house with a swimming pool to subsequently burn off all the breakfast calories I'd be constantly consuming 😅

Am I blind with hunger or has no one mentioned sausages yet? There has to be amazing sausages on this buffet. And black pudding. And baked beans. And fried bread!!! Why is that not a thing anymore?!

I love the idea of going for a cooked breakfast. Sadly the places within a short distance from me, whilst great at a lot of the full cooked breakfast components have really inferior sausages, which detracts from the experience for me. However, one has started offering eggs Benedict or Eggs Royale, which is a real, if occasional, treat. 🌹

Try true 100% pomegranate juice (not "juice drink"). I dilute it so it's one third still water to two thirds juice - it's still plenty strong enough and has a fruity slightly tannin aftertaste. 🌹

I'm out for brunch at the moment and still drooling over the thought of a breakfast buffet.

Hope the travelodge is a good one.

The ibis near me does a breakfast too good to go bag with buffet leftovers in.

Fluffypiki · 06/04/2024 14:04

Where do you find apple compote in the UK ? Desperate here, in France this is life, here it is either baby food or loosing a kidney for a tiny pot in Waitrose.

LuckyOrMaybe · 06/04/2024 14:27

Not quite the same as someone preparing it for you, but I'm a fan of a cooked breakfast in the mornings. I've found that if I bake a whole pack of sausages and keep the leftovers in the fridge, I can stick a cooked sausage, a tomato and two rashers of bacon in the frypan, add an egg when I turn the bacon and the whole plate is ready quite quickly. Normally no toast or fried bread as I'm gluten-free and also function better when I keep my carbs down (though don't always stick to it).

Apparently Pomegranate juice is beneficial re prevention of dementia @Newestname002
I read that somewhere.
It's very expensive here in Ireland though.,

Yes I've heard that - hence on my shopping list. However, I hear the whole fruit (including skin and pith) is even better when whizzed up in a very good blender. Working up to that one. 🌹

LongCareerOfNearMisses · 06/04/2024 19:33

You're brave attempting a full breakfast buffet before a new job! I'd need a good nap and access to my own loo afterwards...

Sure I saw my SIL attempt some version of this with bacon, eggs, sausages etc in a slow cooker overnight. Didn't sound that appetising tbh...

I loved the breakfasts at our tiny hotel in Istanbul. Individual bowls of honey, jams, olives, cheese, sweet butter, oven baked eggs or shakshouka, lots of freshly baked bread, pastries and Turkish coffee.

Edited

That sounds phenomenal
