To put my wife’s peanut butter in the fridge

I want to preface by saying that me and my wife both pick up after each other a fair bit, we aren’t the tidiest but certainly not the messiest couple and we find each one fixing the problems we see works better than nagging each other for missing this and that.

I recently switched from brown source to mayonnaise and I do sometimes leave it out on the counter. I couldn’t find it and my wife had put it in the cupboard not the fridge when tidying up.

I mentioned that it goes in the fridge not the cupboard and she joked that I should put it away myself.

All light hearted, no fighting but over the last couple of weeks it’s happened and I’ve mentioned it about four times and it’s happened again and I’m not sure how to mention it again without seeming like I’m nagging.

also every morning she forgets to put the peanut butter away and I put it in the cupboard before I get my breakfast. It just happens in our current routine that she has breakfast first and we don’t share, not perfect but is what it is.

Anyway this morning I decided to put her peanut butter on the fridge instead of the cupboard, I’m hoping she’ll find it funny and when she next seas mayonnaise remember the peanut butter and put it in the fridge.

however I’m worried it might come across as petty, we don’t really do practical jokes or pranks.

When do schools go back?

mrlistersgelfbride · 05/04/2024 13:35

*think!

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 05/04/2024 13:38

It does sound petty, but I'd probably do it

WarshipRocinante · 05/04/2024 13:38

If you had posted as a woman and not as a man, the responses would be very very different. People would be on your side and it would be a funny joke to play.

This would be a funny joke in my house. But also, just start putting the mayo away to keep it fresh.

This is such a tiresome, not funny, ridiculous mumsnet response.
Why do posters keep doing it? Kids are not on mumsnet posting joke threads. This isn’t a funny little quip. It’s stupid.

Is it a man?

Rowanthetree · 05/04/2024 13:42

Actually peanut butter in the fridge would make me very angry

Sorry to have upset you.

Anytime someone says “my wife” on mumsnet, the replies will almost all assume the poster is a man. Have you never seen that? Even when the poster says “we are a same sex couple. My wife does….” the replies will repeatedly label the OP as a man. It’s a thing on this forum. Worst than most others.

I don't know if op is a man or a woman, nor does it matter, they should put their own stuff away rather than be PA about their wife doing it wrong.

Letsseeshallwe · 05/04/2024 13:46

So many of you need to lighten up. I'd see the funny side.

Saymyname28 · 05/04/2024 13:48

Petty but perfect. Mayo goes in the fridge, the fact you've told her this (as though an adult wouldn't know this) and she said youshould pick up after yourself when she also leaves stuff out would annoy me.

Depends what your relationship is like though. We'd laugh about this, my ex would have started doing all kinds of malicious passive aggressive things as revenge and DPs ex would have thrown the contents of the cupboards and fridge at him.

Ohdearydeary · 05/04/2024 13:49

My DW once put every piece of clean cutlery we own in the porridge box in a similar situation. Seems reasonable to me!

HurryupHenry · 05/04/2024 13:50

It’s a bit passive aggressive. You know her best though, is she likely to take it as a joke?
If you think she will then Yanbu.

FWIW peanut butter is horrible from the fridge.

Createausername1970 · 05/04/2024 13:53

I haven't RTFT'd, so it's probably been mentioned - have you considered she is doing exactly the same to you? Putting the mayo in the cupboard because you keep leaving it out? If you were tidying up after yourself you wouldn't have needed to tell her 4 times!

Same here. My ex would have taken this as a terrible personal attack and given me the silent treatment. My current partner and I would be giggling over it. For instance, he makes the bed in the morning. Just the thing he does. I, very annoying, will get my clothes for the day and leave whatever longline cardigan I plan to wear on the bed to pick up before I go. He has to move it each time to make the bed and asks me not to, so now when I do it, I come back into the bedroom and he will be wearing it over his boxer shorts whilst cheerily making the bed, or sometimes lying on the bed in the “draw me like one of your French girls” titanic style. It’s just a stupid thing he does when I leave stuff lying! And we find it funny.

Doesn’t sound like it. OP says the both leave stuff and both tidy up after each other. Just sounds normal in their marriage. And is only an issue here because the wife can’t figure out that mayo goes in the fridge.

Laiste · 05/04/2024 13:55

Oh - i'm picturing OP in same sex couple.

Anyway - put your own mayo away and then there's no problem. And/or just say ''if i leave the mayo out can you just leave it because if it goes in the cupboard i forget about it and it'll go off. Ta''.

AND while i'm here;
''switching'' from brown sauce to mayo ..... Confused on what food are you switching these things?! I can't think of much you'd switch from having brown sauce to mayo on.

Except maybe bacon sandwich? 🤔Please tell.

dementedpixie · 05/04/2024 13:56

Our mayonnaise is only occasionally kept in the fridge and we haven't died yet. Same with tomato sauce.

Yeah tomato sauce is meant to be in the fridge isn't it.
In all my years i've never kept it there!
And yes we're all still alive too 😂

SapphosRock · 05/04/2024 13:58

Some peanut butter should not be refrigerated, it does something to the oil and makes it rancid.

I hope you checked the label.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 05/04/2024 13:58

Gosh you both sound like you need some hobbies.

Sherrycat · 05/04/2024 14:00

Well if you’re petty, then I’m petty too, cause I know I’d do the same. But as someone else pointed out, it’s passive aggressive. Which I am also guilty of.

DrinkinghelpsThinking · 05/04/2024 14:08

Meh. I’d probably let out a little ‘ha’, but I wouldn’t be in fits of laughter. I also wouldn’t be upset by it. But putting away condiments isn’t a massive issue in our house, nor is putting things in the wrong place our idea of ‘banter’. So I think this humour is a little lost on me.

I keep my mayo in the bedroom and I’m not dead either.
