Thoughts on Menorca?

Have you ever been? Is it good for families? Much to do? I know it's a fairly small island. I'm looking at it as it has a pretty short flight time and I have three small children who don't like to sit still for long.

If you can recommend any good hotels or areas I would really appreciate some tips.

I would recommend Hotel sur Menorca. 15 mins from the airport, close to a beach and has its own water park. I don’t usually go back anywhere twice but we have there.

Yes I've been there too it's great

Grupotel Club Menorca in Cala'n Bosch is brilliant for kids. We went there two years ago when DS was a baby and it was such an easy, hassle free holiday.

Menorca is so laid back and unpretentious and it feels like it's stuck in a bit of a 90s time warp at times (in the best way possible). I would definitely go again.

Perfect place for young children, lovely gentle beaches, no high rises. Two gorgeous cities to visit. Agree with the time warp vibe, in a good way

budgiegirl · 03/04/2024 14:27

Menorca is lovely, perfect for families. I've been going since I was a young child, have probably been 50 times, and have taken my kids when they were young several times. We are going again in June, and all three of my now grownup kids want to come with us, as they love it so much. We always self-cater though, and stay at Son Bou, or Playas de Fornells.

Most resorts are fairly low key, but are very family friendly, and you won't have a problem finding things to do - especially if your kids like the beach or pool. A few hotels have small waterparks.

I've never stayed there, but the Royal Son Bou looks great for kids, and gets good reviews. And the beach there is just lovely, long, safe, and with water sports and an inflatable water park. There's also a small resort centre, with a few shops and restaurants, amusements etc to have a wander around.

I loved ciutadela - we stayed in Es castell just outside Mahon which was very nice in an upmarket way- but didn't have kids with us. It's gently undulating, and nice beaches rather than spectacular- but with young kids it's probably great- we had lousy weather in July which was a bit of a bummer .

Frogonthelog · 03/04/2024 14:29

Highly recommend Royal Son Bou - my daughters 2 and 4 absolutely loved it and we are going back again this year. It’s a reasonably priced all inclusive with great kids club, activities and beach access. Nothing fancy but not bothered about that with kids!

nothingcomestonothing · 03/04/2024 14:30

Menorca was my DCs first foreign holiday, it's absolutely ideal. Short flight, lovely beaches with calm warm sea, no loud party towns or party-goers, I'm sure you'd have a great time.

The price also seems more reasonable than some of the other places we looked at. Our kids loved it and the staff were good.

Conkersandlattes · 03/04/2024 14:36

We went last year, first holiday away with two small children. Stayed in Binibeca. It was so beautiful, weather was amazing. Rented a villa through air b&b. Hoping to go back this year.

Thank you this has cemented my decision to go there although a lot of the recommended hotels are booked up for most of August!

Could anyone tell me if the Cala n Forcat area is better for families than the Son Bou area? Seen a great hotel but in Cala but the Son Bou area looks better for beaches etc.

Try booking direct and flights separately if needed.
Weve previously gone with EasyJet, BA and this year Jet2. Often the agents will say it’s sold out but the hotel will have rooms available direct

We stayed in Arenal d'en Castell on North Coast. Stunning beach with crystal clear, safe and warm water. Prettiest on the island in my opinion (and there is lots of competition) . Our hotel had a small water park too and was a 3 star, no frills all inc. which suited us fine. The whole island is very low key and chilled out, definitely not party central, some may find it a bit boring. We hired a car for a couple of days (roads so quiet and easy) and explored Binebeca and Son Bou. Our family really enjoyed it but next year we are going further afield to an island with a few more sights/things to do.

SansaClegane · 03/04/2024 16:13

Took my DC to Menorca when they were still quite little, my first solo holiday post divorce. We stayed at Carema club hotel (near Fornells) which was perfect - shallow pool, a large splash park, and right by the beach too! Very secluded and I never had to worry about losing any of them. Would really only recommend that hotel for younger children though, say 10 and under.

Kneeslikethese · 03/04/2024 16:20

We're going this summer to Arenal d'en Castell. Been before, it's a lovely beach. Been to Menorca lots, it's good for families but is quiet and laid back. My 2 are teens now and know its a read a book and relax holiday.
There's a nice zoo on the island and a couple of water parks. Cuitadella is beautiful for a look and has a decent market. Cala Galdana is another resort with a great beach for kids.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 03/04/2024 16:26

Both islands are great for families. Last time we stayed in Cala'n Porter and it was quite hilly. I felt sorry for those with buggies and small children getting up from the beach - it was hard core!

ColleenDonaghy · 03/04/2024 17:24

We went last year to the MarSenses Paradise hotel. The kids were little and the grownups tired Grin so we just spent time at the pool with the occasional walk around the town but it was good. Not my type of holiday pre kids but works well now.

Kitkat1523 · 03/04/2024 18:03

It’s great for little one…the bays are so safe for swimming….we stayed near cuitadella with our GDs 2 years ago…..loved it

Try booking direct with hotel - they may still have rooms available, and it's often cheaper that booking with a package. It's simple enough to organise transfers from the airport, or you could even hire a car - driving in Menorca is very easy, the roads are really good, and it's nice to be able to see other parts of the island.

Cala'n Forcat is good for families too - most of Menorca is! But the beaches are much smaller - it's more a few coves than one big beach. They're pretty, but the beaches get very busy in August. Son Bou has the advantage of being very long, so although it gets busy at one end, you can walk along to find a quieter spot. Don't go too far along though - it's a nudist beach at the far end.

fightingthedogforadonut · 03/04/2024 18:21

We went years ago and stayed at Santa Tomas, which was lovely. Our hotel was bang on the beach.

portocristo · 03/04/2024 18:26

In my opinion Majorca is prettier.
