The be angry at neighbour complaint

leopardsponge · 03/04/2024 11:00

I have been contacted by the council because one of my neighbours has complained about my dog barking. I don't know which neighbour, but I have a strong feeling who.

My dog goes outside first thing (around 7am) to pee and then is out during the day at various times. The garden backs into a footpath so people do pass and yes he does bark but he's a dog, that's what dogs do.

At least complain to me?

OP posts:
Bostoncremecolor · 03/04/2024 15:08

We have a neighbour like this - out every morning at 7am barking and then barks continues throughout the day as people walk past even when the dog is inside the hour and then barks again when it is out at 10pm.

The most irritating thing ever - do people not train dogs any more?

LlynTegid · 03/04/2024 15:09

I agree with you that the neighbours should have approached you first. Then if you had done nothing or the issue remained say after a week or so, then contacted the Council.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 03/04/2024 15:11

Invest in your dog and consider those living around you

Get dog training and when/if you go to work - pay someone to take the dog out at least for 40 mins at least once a day

Dog's bark, cat's poo in people's gardens, babies cry, children scream and shout. There's nothing you can do about it. It's different if you are blasting music out or a dog is stuck outside/inside barking morning, noon and night, that's what the council should get involved with but the other things are just part of everyday life. Some people should just go and live on a desert island.

Cats have a right to roam. Babies crying and children screaming and playing is acceptable. Dogs barking is classed as antisocial behaviour and if it is continuous it does show a lack of training

Why? It's obvious that no one wants to listen to anyone's dog barking. This should not need pointed out, so you'd know right away you're not dealing with a rational person, best to get the council to force them to be a better dog owner.

Also, OP said 'dogs bark', and doesn't know anything about training her animal, so 100% pointless for anyone to complain to her face.

Is that not extremely expensive?

Sooooooo what else can you do. Your dog your problem.

BestieNo1 · 03/04/2024 15:15

You and your dog are a noise nuisance!
Be ashamed enough to do something about it quickly as you are making people's lives a misery. :(

Howmanycatsistoomany · 03/04/2024 15:16

Why can't they just tell me instead of making it formal? I don't know what else i can do other than telling him to stop it!

Why can't they tell you? Really? Presumably you can hear your dog barking. You just don't give a shit about your neighbours being woken up by it and having to listen to it all day.
What can you do? You can train your dog. FFS.

fieldsofbutterflies · 03/04/2024 15:16

leopardsponge · 03/04/2024 14:11

I do try! I say to him to stop but it does nothing. I let him outside thinking it's the right thing to do because he doesn't want to be indoors. It's hard to be out every single time he is because it's raining and I can't trail the DCs to the garden all day long.

Your dog doesn't speak English, so staying "stop" is absolutely pointless unless you've trained him to associate it with a specific action.

It's starting to sound like you just chuck the dog in the garden because it's easier and you don't really care about the impact it has on everyone else. Either you need to take your dog out on a lead every single time he goes to the toilet, or you need to train him not to bark at the fence.

Both things are very easily done.

Jacopo · 03/04/2024 15:17

Holy fuck, if this is actually real I would like to reach through the screen and shake you until your teeth rattled.

CatamaranViper · 03/04/2024 15:17

Sorry but I would also go to the council over speaking to you directly if I didn't know you.
It's clear you already don't care about those around you by letting your dog bark from 7am every day so why would that change if someone approached you?
Personally I just wouldn't want to agro of approaching you.

OzziePopPop · 03/04/2024 15:18

If you’re shouting ’stop it, dog name’ every time, the dog just hears you ‘barking’ (shouting) with him, so thinks he’s doing it right, obviously if you’re ‘barking’ too it’s something to be barked at. Don’t ever shout, call him in, every time. Don’t tell him off, just call him in and be neutral.

Diamonddolphins · 03/04/2024 15:19

It should be a legal requirement that all dogs are professionally trained when adopted/bought.
You’re a selfish neighbour and a bad dog owner, rehome the dog for its own sake and for the neighbours.
I lived next door to a yappy dog for years that ruined my life, I needed long term medication for the stress and anxiety it caused. They’d leave to bark outside from 11pm-1am and again from 5am. Anytime we used our garden or even opened a window it would bark at us the entire time. We never slept. I reported them to the council and nothing happened. We ended up moving house because I couldn’t take it anymore. Then moved into a house with a Great Dane that barked every time we went in the garden and from 4am for hours. It resulted in a mental breakdown and yet another house move.
People like you have no concern or consideration for those you are affecting. If someone was waking your children every night with a party I bet you’d report them. Do not own pets you are incapable of looking after.

Oh! You could get one of those collars that give a small electric shock whenever the dog barks, but you wear it and you might realise how annoying it is for everyone else.

You got me in the first half 🤣
Oh god I'd love to see this for all crap dog owners.

And useless parents.

Bad bosses.

I... I have a long list.

Ffs if you cannot look after the dog properly without it upsetting ppls peace then you shouldn't have a dog ...its your fault not the dogs and let me tell you there is nothing more fucking annoying than a bloody yakking .your a dead beat dog owner glad you don't live near me but then again I would get the council involved hopefully that would be enough if not it could lead to you being evicted either way it would get stopped I feel for the ppl who live near you ffs

I have 2 dogs, I had 2 dogs when my children were babies as well. I never let me dogs out unsupervised, they get long walks am and pm and I take them out for intermittent loo breaks during the day. They don’t need to be outside in the garden, they are generally snoozing all day as they have sufficient exercise (I have high energy young spaniels). I would complain to the council about a dog out in the garden barking all the time as well - it would drive me nuts. You already know he is going to go out and bark at passers by so just don’t give him the opportunity to do it. Out on a lead for a wee and straight back indoors, if they need out because they are bored then take for a walk.

If he's whining to be out all day it's probably because he's bored. Provide him with some mental stimulation in the house - a kong, puzzle games, snuffle mats, long lasting treats etc. Do the same in the garden and only let him out there for extended periods of time if he is going to be supervised. When you're out there with him spend time training him. The minute he barks, he's brought back inside. If he's outside and settled/relaxed reward him for it. He'll soon learn which behaviour is desirable. Leaving him in the garden for extended periods of time without supervision is of no benefit to you, him or your neighbours. He's frustrated, you're frustrated and your neighbours are clearly very frustrated. The problem isn't the dog, the problem is that he has no mental stimulation. You need to ensure you're meeting all of his needs. With two walks a day and some games to play when he's bored he should spend the rest of the day sleeping.

Hatty65 · 03/04/2024 15:36

Take him inside if he barks. Walk him on a lead if he needs to go out. But don't just chuck a barking dog out into your garden.

Last summer was ruined for me by next door's dog who spends every sunny day outside in their garden fucking BARKING at nothing, non stop! I just want to sit in the sunshine, enjoying a coffee and peace and quiet, but instead I'm listening to Rover barking hysterically for 40 minutes or so. Apparently over a bee. Or blowing leaves. Or the fucking voices in his head. Who knows?

I don't understand how my neighbour doesn't understand it's annoying all her neighbours. I have tried to go round to complain, but they refuse to answer the door.

wobbledobbleflobble2 · 03/04/2024 15:36

Nothing else you can do if you've already tried saying "Excuse me dog, I would prefer that you stop barking with immediate effect" and the rude sod has completely ignored you.

I think you need to plan a formal meeting with him and, if no improvement, give him a written warning. It's the logical next step since he has failed to follow a reasonable instruction.

Tell you what? That your dog is barking? But you already know that and have chosen not to do anything about it.
