The be angry at neighbour complaint

leopardsponge · 03/04/2024 11:00

I have been contacted by the council because one of my neighbours has complained about my dog barking. I don't know which neighbour, but I have a strong feeling who.

My dog goes outside first thing (around 7am) to pee and then is out during the day at various times. The garden backs into a footpath so people do pass and yes he does bark but he's a dog, that's what dogs do.

At least complain to me?

OP you should be mortified this has happened not annoyed at your neighbours. Sort it out or rehome your dog. You know it’s not barking because it is happy and well adjusted right? Give it a chance with someone that is concerned with its welfare and give your poor neighbours a break. FFS

Foxgloove · 03/04/2024 22:16

My dog did this and guess what I did?? I TRAINED him to STOP!!
Go on YouTube there's loads of videos. It takes time, patience and perseverance.

What you don't do is just let your dog annoy all the neighbours and think you've tried everything by telling him to 'stop'.

Fucking hate yapping dogs with lazy owners.

ADrownedRat · 03/04/2024 22:20

don't know what else i can do other than telling him to stop it!

This is crazy. Because dogs are well known for their ability to understand and hold conversations in English.

Next week: How do I stop my dog from shitting all over the carpets in the house? I don't know what else I can do other than tell him to stop.

I hope OP rehomes both her dogs. I hate people like her, I really do. She is an utter liablity. Animals are a blessing and a privilege that some people do not deserve.

He barks at everyone who goes past. I don't really know how to stop him as my other dog doesn't do it. Yes he goes out everyday of the week. Why can't they just tell me instead of making it formal? I don't know what else i can do other than telling him to stop it!

This will sound mad but It's easier if you can teach the dog to bark on command, that way you can then switch it off by teaching them when not to bark. Obviously having a footpath it's going to trigger the dog but you have to understand (and I say this as a big dog owner) not everyone wants to listen to dogs barking, even if it is what dogs do. My last 2 properties I've had issues with at least one neighbour. One was a crack dealer who was up selling drugs til 5am and objected that he couldn't stay in bed all day because the dog woke him up and the other was a man of a certain religious persuasion who viewed dogs as unclean and thought harassing me because he didn't like dogs would make me move out. Obviously take this as meaning that you do need to take some sort of action to alleviate a nuisance being caused but remember it's only a first complaint. The council told me that these sort of complaints are treated as low level and rarely go any further unless the complaints escalate.

Pickled21 · 03/04/2024 22:26

What would you have said to them had they complained to you? From your responses here it would have been just more along the lines of , 'what do you want me to do about it, he's a dog?' He's your dog though and your problem. If you don't have the time or money to train him then you shouldn't be keeping a dog.

katseyes7 · 03/04/2024 22:27

Someone on my estate goes past my house every morning about half past eight (I suspect on the school run). Every morning their dog yaps and wakes me up.
That might not sound 'early' to most people, but when you work shifts, maybe not finishing work until midnight, getting home at half past, then it takes a while to wind down before you get to sleep, it is.
I've no idea what it barks at, but it's every weekday morning. It's even been every day this week and last, thought it's school holidays.
I agree with one of the PP - l think people get noise blind to stuff like this.

you say that I’m sure my dog does understand English 😂 she answers me back. So ironically if she’s barking, I go to her do you wanna go in because your pissing me off and shell sort of whimper grunt which sounds like no 😂 she damn well knows the word treat too lol

Milkand2sugarsplease · 03/04/2024 22:35

You need to train him not to bark. Dogs don't understand the words we say to them as language, they associate sounds they hear with different actions. Ie training a dog to sit down to the word sit. Essentially you could train a dog to sit to any word under the sun, it's just we use sit because, well that's what we want them to do.

To train a dog not to bark you need to first train them to bark in order to then teach a command to stop barking. It will take time and commitment from you to achieve this - and/or money on a behaviourist. That won't be cheap but it's something you sign up for when you get a dog, just like not really wanting to pay vets fees but sometimes, needs must. Your neighbours shouldn't be inconvenienced by your lifestyle.

yoteyak · 03/04/2024 22:37

It's quite straightforward, OP. Two possibilities:

  1. Train the dog not to bark so much.
  2. Get rid of the dog. (Give away, sell, 'put to sleep'. Your choice.)
If you do neither, but leave the dog to keep barking and diminishing other people's lives, it means you are a bad person. (In fact, and not to put too fine a point on it, it means you are a selfish immoral sociopath.)

Very likely you won't see matters this way, @leopardsponge. Bad people seldom do. But that's the long and the short of it. Simple, really.

Sorry to have to point this out. But it seems someone needs to.

whynotwhatknot · 03/04/2024 22:56

i had neigbours w went out all day andd left poor dog all alone it sounded stressedd anddd barke all day

i went straigt to council -they knew but clearly didnt care-moved not long after

please do some training op its very hard to listen to

Aswellisnotoneword · 03/04/2024 23:51

Why can't they just tell me instead of making it formal?

Um, because you already know! They know you're there while he's barking, they know you know. They know you're choosing to do jack shit about it, other than to add to the disturbance by yelling at him to stop.

You've already outed yourself as a complete arsehole so they don't want to deal with you in person.

ichifanny · 03/04/2024 23:55

wondering if you are my idiot neighbour who their dog barks first bells in the morning and all day then at midnight .

Frangipanyoul8r · 04/04/2024 00:12

I do try! I say to him to stop but it does nothing.

😂 loving the idea that dogs are trained just by politely giving them some instructions. You need to apply to go on the programme “dogs behaving badly” OP. Or at least binge watch the episodes to understand what dog training actually is.

I mean... this is clearly why they complained to the council. Get some dog training or get rid of dog !

I’m not a fan of dogs but I totally agree with this. People like OP are ruining it too for responsible loving owners who are aware not everyone wants to hear their dog go nuts all the live long day.

If you don't know what to do to stop your dog barking then you need to find out. It doesn't have to be an expensive trainer. There are plenty of videos and resources online. Look at Southend Dog Training.

But you have to put the work in. Every day. Just telling the dog "No" won't work as this has become a habit for him.

Stop letting him out unsupervised. Go out with him on a lead or a longline. Keep him away from the fence. Play with him. The second he barks, you bring him back inside.

Are you taking him out for walks or is the garden his only exercise?

I'm sure someone has already suggested this but why not take the dog out for a walk at 7am every day instead of just letting the out into the garden.

Allshallbewell2021 · 04/04/2024 08:43

Two close friends of mine have dogs who they cannot control.

I was walking the other day wearing jeans I was going to travel in and wear for that evening and this lovely friend let her dog run up and jump on my legs and stood and watched him and said it's name weakly - no training. I was so pissed off but didn't say anything because what can you say with something that bad?

Another friend has an enormous black (lab maybe?) who is completely out of control. She takes him for walks which are yankathons, it's ridiculous. An untrained dog is, to me, a nightmare for everyone.

These are two very intelligent people. I don't get how dumb people can be about their bloody dogs.

I grew up with a stunning German shepherd who was extremely well trained and a joy for the family. Hard work but worth every minute.

pimplebum · 04/04/2024 11:52

Pay for training to get him to stop

pimplebum · 04/04/2024 11:54

Yes it's expensive to train your dog but that's the price you pay to have a pet

If you can't afford to keep your pet and pay for expenses give it to the rspca who will find a home that can look after it properly

cerisepanther73 · 04/04/2024 12:01

@leopardsponge

Would you be happy if you had a next door neighbours dog waking ⏰️ up up whenever the times dog was let out first thing in the morning?

Isn't there a thing 🤔 that at certain time such as before 8am noise levels need to be very low,
as pro active discouraged from having any higher levels of noise levels for neighbourliness relations and minanuim noise levels at 8pm?.

Stop recommending this awful person as a dog trainer. Cheers.

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/04/2024 18:58

Yeah please folks stop recommending Southend, he loves his shock collars and prong collars even if he doesnt show them in his videos any more. Training dogs does not need to involve using pain to suppress normal behaviour (or any behaviour), it causes more problems than it will ever resolve!
