The be angry at neighbour complaint

leopardsponge · 03/04/2024 11:00

I have been contacted by the council because one of my neighbours has complained about my dog barking. I don't know which neighbour, but I have a strong feeling who.

My dog goes outside first thing (around 7am) to pee and then is out during the day at various times. The garden backs into a footpath so people do pass and yes he does bark but he's a dog, that's what dogs do.

At least complain to me?

I complained about a neighbour to the council once op. It wasn't dog related but trust me once you reach that stage you are truly on your knees with desperation. People don't just do it over nothing. I was in tears, miserable and very desperate.

Mere1 · 03/04/2024 20:20

The first thing I used to hear in a morning at 6 am was a neighbour’s dog barking. The last thing I heard at night-midnight-was the same dog. In summer, if it’s out, it barks at anything. This is followed by one of their household shouting ‘shut up’ again and again. Dogs can be a huge nuisance. All should complain. I did to other neighbours and her hairdresser, who told her. It stopped.

And if they did complain to you, as you request in your opening post, what would you actually do to remedy the situation once and for all?

I do try! I say to him to stop but it does nothing. I let him outside thinking it's the right thing to do because he doesn't want to be indoors. It's hard to be out every single time he is because it's raining and I can't trail the DCs to the garden all day long.

You seem to have every excuse around why you're not working on it.
I'm the owner of a woofer and a not woofer. Fortunately we don't have close neighbours, but we do call her in if she starts, or put her back inside, or offer a treat to distract her.

I take my dog out to the garden on a lead because he can’t be trusted yet (he’s 6 months). Stick a lead and some shoes by the back door and you’re good to go. We live in England, rain happens, and you’re only out in it for a couple of minutes at a time so you’re not going to melt.

Are you rewarding him for being quiet? That works much better than shouting at him for barking as he won’t understand what is expected of him, he just sees that he is getting yelled at! I’d try the lead, and stopping dead until he’s quiet so he can’t go anywhere, then rewarding/praising the quiet to start with to see if it improves.

You do have to properly train dogs out of behaviours though (trust me, I’ve had, and still have, a long list!)

Bellie710 · 03/04/2024 20:43

Have you tried a barking collar?

SwordToFlamethrower · 03/04/2024 20:44

NO THEY DON'T! NOT IF YOU BLOODY TRAIN THEM LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO!

This makes me so goddam angry. The entitlement of dog owners never ceases to amaze me.

He barks at everyone who goes past. I don't really know how to stop him as my other dog doesn't do it. Yes he goes out everyday of the week. Why can't they just tell me instead of making it formal? I don't know what else i can do other than telling him to stop it!

Well, obviously no point trying to talk to you then is there?
I hate it when people let their dog bother others with their barking and even worse is when they let them intimidate passers by.

ValleyClouds · 03/04/2024 20:53

Gosh, I could have written the reverse of this OP! I am sick and tired of being harassed by a barking growling dog in the front yard of a house on my road. It desperately tries to break free of the gate and fence. It seems a fairly young dog and I worry it will grow and break free eventually and hurt someone. I don't know this neighbour and I like a quiet life so I haven't complained but I do feel intimidated now and dread going past the house.

I'm not surprised people have complained, tbh! Can you imagine how annoying that must be for your poor neighbours? It's not good enough to say that you don't know what to do; you have to train him to stop.

Is that not extremely expensive?

Did you not factor this when buying your dog?

That's the truth. Sometimes I'm not sure who takes more of my money. My dd or our dog. OP dogs get sick dogs need shots check ups emergency vet bills. If you can pay for training how would you pay a vet?

Hyppogriff · 03/04/2024 21:42

Oh dear - YABU that would be terrible for your poor neighbours (and I love dogs !!!) very unneighbourly behaviour

daffodilandtulip · 03/04/2024 21:46

I get woken every day by dogs barking. The amount of selfish dog owners is ridiculous.

Londonrach1 · 03/04/2024 21:47

Train him not to bark like a responsible owner. Your poor neighbour every day at 7am. There is a dog in the road behind us that barks every night at 8pm stopping my daughter going to sleep till 8.30pm. Didn't realize you could complain. Is it the council?

OP is a deadbeat owner, she probably wouldn't bother taking her dog to the vet. People like her make me sick. OP, you are an absolute disgrace. Both your neighbours and your dog deserve far better than you.

Sadly you are probably right and the poor dogs have never been to a vet.

You need to take him out in a lead for a wee until it breaks the cycle of barking its the only way mine stopped. Its very unfair to tour neighbours

Employ a dog behaviourist to stopnthe reactive barking in the meantime so you will be able to just let him out eventually

pavedwithgoodintentions · 03/04/2024 21:58

There's a dog nearby that is driving neighbours batty with all its barking. Social media posts complain about it. The owner argues back on social media 'excusing' her dog's behaviour for a litany of reasons.

End of the day, it's not fair to everyone else who lives there and has to listen to hours of barking.

You need to sort it out, OP. Via dog training and/or not letting it be outside alone until it stops this behaviour.

I asked my neighbour to be more considerate around allowing their dog to bark and whine throughout the day and sometimes at night. Her reply was much along the lines of what you (op) stated above, no aplogy offered, no assurances that they'd try and work on training the dog, etc
Eventually they just descended into telling me dogs bark and I should get a fucking life.

Awful.

Firecarrier · 03/04/2024 22:06

You chose to own a dog and therefore be woken early every morning.

Your neighbour did not.

You say he shouod have complained directly to you, yet you don't sound sorry.

I can picture the OP in my mind's eye, I bet she doesn't exactly look calm and approachable.

We lived next door to a dog which barked constantly. They would go out and leave it for hours, and it just barked and barked. The damned thing never go tired. Then we bought one of those zappers that only dogs can hear, and our lives were back to normal. I hope I melted the little fucker's eardrums.

Our NDN have a yappy Westie. Where can I buy an eardrum melting zapper?!

Doesn't it just drive them mad and make them bark more?
