The be angry at neighbour complaint

I have been contacted by the council because one of my neighbours has complained about my dog barking. I don't know which neighbour, but I have a strong feeling who.

My dog goes outside first thing (around 7am) to pee and then is out during the day at various times. The garden backs into a footpath so people do pass and yes he does bark but he's a dog, that's what dogs do.

At least complain to me?

I go out with my dog if it's a time I don't want him barking, that way I can shush him and bring him in immediately if he starts to woof. He is a normal dog so probably gallops out a couple of times per day to shout at cats, birds and neighbours but he is not out for longer than a few minutes at a time. He is not allowed out to bark before 9 am or after 7pm. I thought that was normal.

Bellyblueboy · 03/04/2024 12:32

what would you have done if the neighbour (s) had approached you directly? It sounds like you wouldn’t have done anything.

I would hate to live near you - dog barking at very morning at 7am. Even if I was up on a weekday it’s really annoying! But never being able to sleep passed 7am on weekends, bank holidays and days off! How annoying.

you sounds like an anti-social problem neighbour

destroyess · 03/04/2024 12:32

YABU. Dog's barking is a nuisance and neighbour has right to peaceful enjoyment of their home. The world doesn't revolve around your dog.

Neighbour might have ptsd, neurological condition, autism, sensory issues that means they need peace and quiet. Or they might not, in which case they are still just as entitled to peace.

Is that not extremely expensive?

Part of owning a dog is training it properly. There's nothing worse than living next to barking dogs.

He barks at everyone who goes past. I don't really know how to stop him as my other dog doesn't do it. Yes he goes out everyday of the week. Why can't they just tell me instead of making it formal? I don't know what else i can do other than telling him to stop it!

Maybe they complained rather than telling you because you clearly knew your dog was barking but hadn't done anything about it.

Allshallbewell2021 · 03/04/2024 12:40

We had people with a garden backing on to ours with an endlessly yapping dog for long periods every day. It made me miserable but I didn't think to complain. They appear to have moved - thank God.

It's a horrible noise. And next to where you might want to sit to relax. I don't understand dog owners who can't/won't/refuse to/don't know to/can't be arsed to train their dogs

gamerchick · 03/04/2024 12:42

Whats the point in telling you directly? You're not going to do anything about it anyroad.

You need to go out and supervise your dog and take him straight in to stop him barking at people going past. He's being extremely annoying and it's up to you to stop it

Inspireme2 · 03/04/2024 12:44

The dog barks at everyone going past during the day. That could be him being territorial, perhaps.
Natural for a dog, although some people struggle to feel as ease to confront, the owner perhaps feeling rather intimating to ask you to get your dog to stop barking.
If you let the dog bark at everyone how many people is that a day?
Some people fear dogs.
Some want to be complaining.
Educate yourself on your dogs breed and behaviour and ways to get him to calm down the barking.

All you have to do is go online to your council they will sort it it’s easy no drama and they will be told to sort it out they don’t say who complained wouldn’t care if they did tbh as they would get a knock from me in the first instance…nobody has to put up with this shit !

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 03/04/2024 12:44

I live next to a path and over the road is a dog bin. People loudly chatting and slamming the dog bin sometimes make my dog bark. I don’t shout out the window for people to be silent it’s give and take. Dont let the dog haters on here get you down. Unless it’s completely excessive what can you do, train your dog to use its quiet voice lol

boozeclues · 03/04/2024 12:45

Yep I would of complained too.

my neighbour lets her dogs out at a similar time every single day, one of hers barks at everything and anything (the other isn’t as bad).

She fucks off for a long shower completely oblivious and most weekends my lie in is ruined.

Beautiful3 · 03/04/2024 12:45

Mine doesn't bark while out on a walk. If he does it again, one sharp tug on his lead with a loud, "No".

Mummyofthewildones · 03/04/2024 12:46

YABU. I'd be thoroughly pissed off if I was woken up every morning by a neighbour's barking dog at 7am. You should be taking it out supervised so you can stop it barking or take it back indoors. You don't say what kind of dog it is but I think you should bear in mind not everybody likes dogs, and some people may be frightened of a dog jumping up/barking at them. Not everyone has to love your pet. Edited to add, yes, dog training might be expensive but it's a responsible thing to do as a pet owner. You can be issued with an ASBO in extreme circumstances too.

It’s not give and take nobody should have to put up with a dog constantly barking end of its shit and makes mental health suffer if you have a dog don’t leave it in the garden yakking take the damn thing for a walk

If you haven’t even attempted to train your dog then absolutely I would be making it a formal complaint, as to your neighbour it looks like you don’t care so why would they approach you

RandomMess · 03/04/2024 12:49

Instead of letting the dog out at 7am get dressed and take it in a short walk.

You could put him on a lead and take him for a walk.

I do have some sympathy with the complainer, when I had a 3 year old and a new baby my neighbours put their dog out at 11 pm every night and if the door slamming as he went out didn't wake everyone up the dog barking probably did, if we got past that the door slamming as he went in probably managed to do it. I swear I was a gibbering wreck at 10.30 as I watched the clock and doorslammingdogbarking hour approached.

Ten years later as a divorcee I met and married their nephew, the first meeting was a little awkward.

IncompleteSenten · 03/04/2024 12:53

My neighbour thinks she can tell her dog to stop barking.

It goes like this

Dog - Bark bark
Neighbour - dog's name!
Dog - bark bark?
Neighbour - DOG'S NAME!
Dog - BARK BARK??
Neighbour - DOG'S NAME!!!!!!

the dog has no idea that repeatedly saying or yelling its name means shut up.

This is because dogs need training not telling.

Train your dog. The expense is part of the cost of keeping an animal, just like food, vet bills and insurance.

itsallabitofamystery · 03/04/2024 12:55

My dog barks when he's outside. It's his way of telling me he's ready to come in. So it's out for his business and then back in. On the few occasions when I have to leave him out, for example I had the decorators in recently, as soon as he barked I went out to tell him to stop. I don't like to hear barking dogs, so I don't expect my neighbours to listen to mine. You need to either let yours out later, or respond to him quicker when he barks and bring him in.

rainbowunicorn · 03/04/2024 12:58

We have this where we live. There are loads of dogs around and on the whole you never hear them. There is one though that barks at everything if it is outside it barks at people, birds, cats, it's bloody shadow. It barks when we hang out washing, if we go to close to the fence walk past it. It just fucking barks. Then the owners piss off out and leave it in the house where it continues to bark at approx 1 min intervals until they come back. It is a pain in the arse
The owners also talk to it like it is a baby and pander to it.

anniegun · 03/04/2024 12:59
