The be angry at neighbour complaint

leopardsponge · 03/04/2024 11:00

I have been contacted by the council because one of my neighbours has complained about my dog barking. I don't know which neighbour, but I have a strong feeling who.

My dog goes outside first thing (around 7am) to pee and then is out during the day at various times. The garden backs into a footpath so people do pass and yes he does bark but he's a dog, that's what dogs do.

At least complain to me?

If this isn’t a wind up - which I genuinely hope it is - OP you need to get your head out of your arse, be a responsible dog owner and actually train your dog

Would you wear your earbuds during the day?

I don't bloody think so. The cheek of you. Why the fuck should the neighbours have to do anything? It's the dog owners problem to fix. It's not a dog barking for a few minutes a day situation, clearly.

You neglected to mention in your original post how much the dog was actually barking, which made me think it was probably a fair bit.
You then admitted that your dog barks at everything that goes past 😂 yes, you're being unreasonable.
That's not normal behaviour for a stable dog, I'm not surprised your neighbours are pissed off.

ABwithAnItch · 03/04/2024 19:15

I live next door to a dog that barks all the live long day. It’s a yappy breed. I have never complained to the owner or council but somedays feel like I was actually going to lose my shit listening to that goddamn dog, and I have a dog. In fact I love dogs. I work from home so I cannot escape. I finally bought an expensive pair of noise cancellation headphones. My point is, you cannot say, Oh dogs are dogs. Listening to a dog bark can be extreme lu stress inducing for some people even other dog owners. I am going to guess that your dog is waking someone up every morning and they are sick of it.

MadeofCheeese · 03/04/2024 19:15

I think the OP literally does not know how to train out this behavior.
The dog does not understand the word "stop".
You need to constantly reward when the barking stops and it turns to you.
Training needs to be constant.
My yappy neighbors were surprised when they had not heard a bark from my new dog.
Just look up training videos and stick with it.

If you commit to being a dog owner, you should also commit to paying for things for your dog

YABVVU and your poor dog is probably bored

Train your damn dog and become a responsible dog owner

Caffeineislife · 03/04/2024 19:18

You need to train the dog to stop barking at people on the public footpath. Yes hiring a trainer can be expensive, however that is a cost that you should have researched before getting a dog. It is part of getting a dog that you might need to pay for training and should have been considered. If your dog barks at people going past then yes, you do need to go outside with the dog every time. Again, it is part of dog ownership. If your dog is reactive then you need to accompany your dog. If you don't want to do this or pay for a trainer then you deserve to be reported. If it's still too much trouble for you then maybe look at rehoming the dog if you can't be a responsible owner and neighbour.

Why would they complain to you? You know the dog barks and you haven't bothered to do anything about it. People like you only respond when they're afraid of the consequences. You are in the wrong.

Poor op.

It's terribly difficult when you've tried absolutely nothing and you're all out of ideas.

(Train your bloody dog).

Muthaofcats · 03/04/2024 19:34

leopardsponge · 03/04/2024 11:08

Is that not extremely expensive?

You shouldn’t be allowed to own a dog if you can’t afford to train and care for it.

says a lot that you’re more annoyed at the method of the complaint and not the fact you’re upsetting people.

a barking dog would drive me to despair, why should people put up with this stress because you can’t be bothered to train your dog properly?

Dog sandwiches? I think Hesten Blumenthal has a recipe

TheCatterall · 03/04/2024 19:53

Solutions:

take the dog for a walk instead.
dog training to make it less reactive.
muzzle the dog for its backyard toileting.

Lots of things you could do to be less inconsiderate to neighbours..

you decided to have a pet. Therefore you are responsible for any disruption it causes.

Thegoodbadandugly · 03/04/2024 19:59

What about mixed cheese sandwich?

Luckily the law doesn’t say ‘wear earbuds and ignore them’.
The law gives people like me the power to fine or prosecute owners and/or seize dogs that are causing a nuisance.

101Nutella · 03/04/2024 20:02

YABU. Put your dog on a lead in the garden and take them in if they bark.

go to training classes and learn about distraction eg playing fetch so they have positive reinforcement instead.

the fact you’re asking us and saying training is expensive suggests you probably do let your dog bark for too long and too often so the complaints are warranted.

also why should someone get in to a confrontation with you? Would you be receptive?

whatevss · 03/04/2024 20:04

"I tell him to stop it"

Maybe he doesn't speak English?
