Hate the new woman at work

I work a pretty small company, office of 35, my role is in sales. I like my job, could make more elsewhere but enjoy the work life balance and mostly the team.

My particular desk area is made up of 6 people, 4 in sales and 2 marketing. Marketing is just the head of marketing and a degree apprentice. The head of marketing recently left and was replaced and I cannot stand the replacement.
Our previous head of marketing had 12 years experience, 5 years as head of marketing, 2 before that with us and 5 before elsewhere. He was great. Our replacement is a 25 year old, 3 years experience, and conveniently related to the chairman! The poor degree apprentice must be desperate to leave ... how can you learn from someone with as much as experience as you!
To top it off, it's come out she's is making more than the previous head of marketing by 5k, surely she should be starting on less due to her lack of experience!!
She's okay enough at the job but personality wise she's a flirt and rather annoying.
It's also no secret that 3 weeks in she's already slept with on of the guys in research!
This is our second nepo hire in 8 months (owners daughter too).

AIBU to be so pissed off with this hire to the point I want to leave a company I've been at for 9 years? This is ridiculous right?

Why? It’s a family firm. They hired a family member who is decent at her job. What’s wrong with that. Plenty of family firms employ family members, as long as they are capable, as this woman is, I see no issue with people going to work in the family business.

No idea about this company but IME it's crap for the non-family staff. You know you'll never be promoted above X, their suggestions will be implemented before yours, their views carry more weight and they'll earn more regardless of qualifications or experience. Then in times of hardship they certainly won't be up for redundancy.

I'll never again work for a family business, especially not one where the founding generation has moved on and the next generation is in charge.

lookwhatyoudidthere · 03/04/2024 17:06

Sounds like a 'family company', time to leave!

Nicetobenice67 · 03/04/2024 17:10

Are you jealous of her 🤔

Notinthemood12 · 03/04/2024 17:14

There are 3 types of people: the ones who will brown nose the faves for their own benefit sliming all over the place, the ones who despise the lot of them and stew in their bitterness for the money forevermore, and the ones who can’t stomach it and leave only to find the same despicable banes of life in the next workplace.

Rosindub · 03/04/2024 17:16

This feels like another example of the fear and dislike of younger women that is so prevalent on Mumsnet.

Nobodyknowsitall5 · 03/04/2024 17:16

You sound awful.

I’m one that despises the lot of them 🤣🤣🤣

Glass113 · 03/04/2024 17:30

Ah don't be that woman that hates the young women just because you can.

dowereallyknow · 03/04/2024 17:30

@Elbai I've been told everything I know rather than asked!!
So you engaged in inappropriate conversation

The sleeping with someone convo came up as I'm friends with someone she decided to tell!
So again you engaged in inappropriate conversation

AStepAtaTime · 03/04/2024 17:40

I’d be cracking out the popcorn 🍿 Sit back and enjoy the show OP

THisbackwithavengeance · 03/04/2024 17:50

Come on OP, you know that as an older woman, you're not allowed to have an opinion about anything least of all a younger woman because you're obviously jealous and bitter....

Hmm
MrsJellybee · 03/04/2024 18:13

I came across women people like you when I was young and trying to better myself in the workplace. You sound jealous.

You missed out the happy healthy moderates, who think nepotism stinks, but hate the game not the player, and weigh up whether any potential detriment to them is worth leaving their job over.

Arrestedmanevolence · 03/04/2024 18:25

If you've got more time in the job and she's come in at a higher level then you could learn from eachother. Why not suggest some peer mentoring rather than being so catty.

Woodlandsocks · 03/04/2024 18:33

Well does the guy get the same judgement.

Gosh I’ve had people react like you to me for men flirting with me. Why is it the woman that is hated.

Woodlandsocks · 03/04/2024 18:34

Although can’t disagree that nepotism is generally crap.

EveryoneJapan · 03/04/2024 18:40

You’ve said she’s okay at the job, so doesn’t seem to be a lot to hate her about. Turn up, do your stuff, go home. If it bothers you, start looking around.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/04/2024 18:52

I’m not sure I’d like to be one of your colleagues.

Hmm

There’s literally no other reason why the OP would hate a colleague so much.

No other reason at all other than the OP feels insecure, threatened and/or envious.

AStepAtaTime · 03/04/2024 17:40

The only “show” is the jealous OP making an absolute tit of herself.

hotpotlover · 03/04/2024 20:06

I haven't RTFT, but you come across as quite malicious gossiping about your colleague's sex life.

I think you're just one of the many office bullies that I've come across many times in my working lifem

katebushh · 04/04/2024 01:15

YABU.

You come across as judgemental and jealous.

In SMEs there is often an element of nepotism, family businesses and all that. I'd have a good think about how much it's offending you and potentially leaving to earn more elsewhere.

cerisepanther73 · 04/04/2024 01:20

@Elbai

She is making a fool of herself and will get a bad reputation sooner of later too..
