to think McDonald's have lost the main idea of "fast food"

urwildquoter24 · 02/04/2024 10:21

It's not even fast anymore. It takes at least 15 minutes on a good day to get food, and on a bad day even longer. The drive-thru is even worse, I was in there last weekend and there were three cars in front of me and took half an hour to get my food and go.

I haven't even seen McDonald's do anything particularly creative recently. They're just bringing back old things and the food really doesn't look anything like in there adverts (which we established years ago)

And don't start about the new Happy Meal toys!!!

McDonald's is basically where fast food started, and now I think it's lost it a bit.

It's really fast in all the ones I go to even the busy packed ones. And they are always bringing new things out 🤔

I work in said restaurant. I don’t know what it’s like in other franchises but ours personally is as follows
Food is usually cooked to order. Fast food doesn’t mean instant food.
Priority is Drive Thru, then deliveries, then in store.
The vast majority of workers are teenagers - including shift managers. I’d take this into account when slagging off staff.
Fries are more likely to be hot and fresh if it’s busy.
Happy to answer any questions if I can!

BlokeHereInPeace · 02/04/2024 15:48

Hi Tatted and yes, not right to have a go at staff. So the system prioritises the drive thru and deliveries, good to know. Is there anything on the menu that's quicker to make?

The one near us is fast and everything is always hot. It’s a motorway junction though, so it’s always busy.

It’s not my idea of a treat, but it fulfils a purpose

You don't like your fast food 'hot'? care to elaborate, i always return my food if it's not hot.

Where did she say she didn’t like it…? I think you need to read the post again.

If I've been waiting in the drive thru and it's a simple order then I just politely decline if they ask me if I mind parking up. It occasionally meets with an incredulous look from the person serving, but they then seem to find the food quite quickly. I'm in a queue and this is the UK after all.

babyproblems · 02/04/2024 15:54

I don’t mind a bit of a wait but agree the happy meal toys are terrible now!! They used to do some real cutesy ones when I was younger and we would swap/collect etc. Now it’s really crap ones and they don’t seem to have good ‘themes’ anymore.

You’d be surprised how often staff are abused, I’m in my mid twenties & it doesn’t bother me as much as the younger ones.
But yes, the focus is always on getting the drive thru moving quick as possible. Delivery drivers have their own area away from the restaurant floor to pick up from.
In terms of quickness, I can tell you what takes longest to make - anything with grilled chicken, filet o fish and the mcplant. If you order these items you will be waiting for them! Anything else typically can be done in 2-5 minutes.

Doing this doesn’t actually make the food come quicker, it just holds up the rest of the drive thru and puts more pressure and risk of abuse from other customers on staff. Hope this helps.

They must be reading this thread. I am not a top fan- have been once since Christmas and that was yesterday! Jut received this email

stayathomer · 02/04/2024 15:58

Was there this weekend and the drive thru was as good as normal but think the machine things inside are irritating, would rather you queued and are served one by one!

Joleyne · 02/04/2024 15:59

I remember KFC long before Macdonalds and I still much prefer them.
I never did rate Macdonalds and I hated the way they bullied anyone they considered a competitor.

QueryA · 02/04/2024 15:59

We don't go often but the last couple of times I've been its been awful. Huge waits. One time a delivery driver came in, picked up his order, delivered it and came back and collected his next order before our in store order was ready. And it wasn't as if our order was anything complicated/bespoke! The whole point of mcdonalds is its quick and convenient. Its certainly not quick any more, and not particularly convenient what with all the touch screens, multiple queues etc.

I hope McDs are reading this thread.

Well seeing as the food usually comes within seconds when, previously when I did park up it would always be about 5 minutes, then I'd beg to differ. It's also not my job to keep the drive thru running quickly.

zingally · 02/04/2024 16:00

The two nearest me are never like that.

That being said, I do find it much faster to park, walk in and order, than sit in the drive-thru lane.

It must be years since I went to McDonalds, but there’s one locally that you pass on the way to several supermarkets. Until recently, the queue used to be at least ten deep and frequently more. Over the last month or so, there’s rarely a queue at all. Is it price, quality, freshness, or something else?

I've stopped going since I saw videos of IOF soldiers being gifted food by McDonalds. I'm not funding the genocide of a population. Free 🇵🇸

Maybe people in your area are boycotting as well.

ChocBanana · 02/04/2024 16:06

Absolutely this. My local one has added an extra window to the drive thru to alleviate the backlog.
It’s because of Deliveroo - they can’t cope with the demand.
We ordered a Maccy D breakfast recently, got asked to wait in the parking area. It took 15 minutes to arrive, during which time we counted 36 Deliveroo/Just Eat collections.
Delivery was OK when we weren’t supposed to go out, but now it’s just a pain in the arse.
I also recently gave up after 15 minutes of waiting to be acknowledged at a KFC drive thru, but then got stuck for another 15 minutes because there was no way out of the drive thru without waiting for the car in front to be served.

I was in Starbucks recently - a Deliveroo driver kicked off at the member of staff because she was serving customers in the shop first. He said “Sod them, what about my customers?”

BlokeHereInPeace · 02/04/2024 16:14

I suppose the thing to do is to get there, order it on your phone and give your address as the address of the Macdonalds. Sand by the group of delivers and when one of them gets your order pinged to him, say hello.

Yes, I don't really understand why their food goes cold so quickly. Take their fries, they're put into the cardboard cartons and left on the shelf under what should be "heat" lamps, but they're stone cold if they stay there too long, which in McDonald's terms is a few minutes.

Yet, in places like canteens, hot buffets, supermarket "hot" cabinets, food can still be hot if it's been there ages. Same with places like Greggs where cooked food stays hot for a long time.

Are the McDonald's "heat" lamps actually not that hot??

But yes, in the old days when there were stacks of burgers in the dispenser trays/shelves, they were a lot hotter even though they'd have been there a while.

Now they're supposed to be made to order, they're cold even when they come straight from the back. The burgers etc must be pre-cooked and kept "warmish" in trays in the kitchen area so are already pretty cooled down by the time they're assembled.

The lamps are probably not hot enough so the satff dont burn their hands 😂

Nothing would surprise me anymore in the current snowflake culture.

Runnerinthenight · 02/04/2024 16:25

I've given up. Our local was always shit, getting orders wrong all the time.

The food is now like cold, fried cardboard. Ugh.

IrishWombat · 02/04/2024 16:29

It annoys me you can’t get the plastic toys, my son got a Batman toy from there when he was 3 or 4 and it’s one of his absolute favourite toys and he wasn’t even into Batman, he just loves flying it round the room in his hand. I hate the unpredictability of the fries too. When we get it delivered from Uber eats it takes ages and is mostly cold or part of the order is incorrect or missing. All this is a bother as it’s my children’s most favourite treat. (We don’t get takeaways a lot at all)

LyeeLoo · 02/04/2024 16:29

I mean, it’s not even food by this point. They take the P big time. I haven’t been in years and it’s only getting worse. My cousin just shared a video of our local one and the absolute state of it is disgusting too, zero cleanliness 🤮 save your money and go somewhere local owned and better quality.

SaffronSpice · 02/04/2024 16:29

I don’t get why anyone would order a McDonalds to be delivered. They are only edible when they are hot so by the time they been sat in a cool bag and delivered they must be cold and disgusting.

XVGN · 02/04/2024 16:32

I walked into a McD the other weekend for first time in 10 years. I saw lots of people and their hands all over some touch screen and thought .... nah!

JosiePosey · 02/04/2024 16:32

My current local McD's is horrific. My DH and his friend once waited half an hour for a double cheeseburger each.

I rarely go anymore as

  1. I've given up eating UPF/shit and
  2. it takes too long for such shit food.

Its ALWAYS cold, and they seem to bag it and leave it on a counter, nowhere near any lights or heat source, for ages befroe they give it to you.

They also seem to have no sense whatsover when it comes to bagging, they get the burger and put it in the bag, leave it on the cold side. Go and put fries down and stand and watch them cook, then take them out, carton them and put them in the bag. Then they put the fries in the bag with the cold burger and leave it on the cold side while they go off and make the drink. Sometimes, for extra measure, they put the cold drink full of ice into the same bag as the food, just to make sure its extra cold by the time you eat it. Then they leaveit all on the cold side for a bit more while they forget about it and serve drive-thru until you can get their attention and say 'is that mine?'Then you finally get handed your stone cold food.

When I worked there, many moons ago, we had to get the drink made first while waiting for the other stuff. There were enough staff on a Saturday to have a dedicated fry station person that kept them coming, and we had the bin that actually kept the food hot.

Its just shit now.
