Am I About to loose my driving licence for speeding offences

cockeyedoptimist · 01/04/2024 21:17

Please help as I’m in a panic and can’t speak to anyone official until tomorrow .
I’ve just had a letter informing me of my fourth speeding offence . They are all for doing 22-24 mph in a 20 zone near my house
im so upset and feel so stupid . I drove up and down this road 6 days a week ( so 12 trips )
About a year ago I got 3 speeding tickets in 3 weeks when they installed a camera . I’ve been so careful since then , creeping up the road every day while staring at my Speedo to ensure I stay within the limit . But today I have a letter to say I was doing 23 a week ago
please be gentle as I know I’ve been reckless
and I know how safe 20 mph zones are .

Is there any chance I won’t loose my licence , or is it automatic . A quick google doesn’t look good . I’m so so upset with myself

A poster called me an arsehole yet my post is the one that gets deleted. Unbelievable.

Runs. Driving license check online, it's free and it'll tell you what's on your license and when

TimeGrabsYouByTheWrist · 01/04/2024 22:23

The 20mph limit in my area is mostly ignored and police won't enforce as they feel a blanket 20 mph isn't necessary.

Getting caught that many times is a bit silly as surely the cameras are obvious?!?!

So yes you could end up banned.

Hopefully they'll get rid of the 20 mph limit eventually and just apply it in areas where it is necessary!

Why are you making this thread all about you? Nothing you are saying is adding anything relevant to the conversation. It's not about you

This seems weird. I thought enforcement only began at 10% +2, which would be 24mph? Also, surely you were offered a speed awareness course for the first one?

I don’t think that happens now as digital speedos are more accurate than the old needles.

Recently happened to me. Mortified. Went to magistrates apologised and admitted guilt and explained I'd face personal hardship - self employed need care for work. Was given 36 months suspended. So I have 12 points but can drive as long as I get nothing in next three years. All advise is don't make excuses be very sorry and explain the harm it will do for you not to drive. To be fair I was really sorry and knew I was at fault too was just honest

Fgs if you drive around this area all the time, why haven’t you worked out here the cameras are placed? They aren’t exactly subtle. Pay attention to your surroundings.

You should know PRECISELY when you were fined and how many points because your insurance company needs this info so you need to know it in order to declare it to them.

TBH you sound a bit ditzy and scatterbrained frankly. Knowing basic stuff like how many times you’ve been done for speeding (and indeed the location of every local speed camera, easy shown on apple maps … hello) is a very basic adult life skill.

You need to grown up and wake up. Put apple maps on your phone showing your route and it will tell you bluntly “speed camera ahead” plus it shows the limit.

This is really basic stuff, come on.

Fgs, you should know that only 28% of people use Apple devices compared to Android so they don't have access to Apple Maps. This is really basic stuff, come on.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/04/2024 22:29

Can you set your car to beep when you hit a certain speed? My car beeps once to alert me when I hit 77mph but can set it to beep at any speed I want, if you could set the car to beep at 20mph it might help stop this happening again.

I totally understand that’s how I come across . That’s why I’m so upset
Thank you for your frankness , it’s not nice to hear but obviously it’s a fair description
I take your point and will use this to make sure I’m not in this situation again

I thought android was the least used?

suburburban · 01/04/2024 22:30

It's pretty awful though if you're constantly looking at your speedometer

Surely the is more dangerous than going at 22.

Not much help now but do you have cruise control? I always set mine going through 20mph zones so I don't speed.

Mine won't engage cruise control under 30mph 😞

Sympathies. I currently have 6 points, courtesy of a concealed policeman who caught me doing 33mph 10 yards before it became a 40 zone.
i was speeding, don’t dispute it. However I didn’t receive any notification through the post until a court summons (ironically completely dealt with via email) arrived for not responding. During my emailed response to the court, I explained I had not received any correspondence and my local postal delivery has been raised in the House of Commons as so dreadful. 6 points and 2.3 thousand pound fine including “victim surcharge” and court fees…..

Hobbi · 01/04/2024 22:35

@CaputDraconis

"I did however think 20mph limits were unenforceable"

No, if anything it's a more severe offence to speed in a zone specifically designed for safety. Speed awareness courses are not typically offered for 20mph infractions.
The 10% thing is a myth, the police have tolerances which are usually set at 10%, but that's a different thing to 'allowing' you a level of speeding.
Speed kills, 20mph zones (they're not limits) are designed to keep people, especially children, safe.

ButtockUp · 01/04/2024 22:38

"Christ. Kick someone whilst they’re down why don’t you…"

She's down because she's been caught speeding three times.

Gunz · 01/04/2024 22:45

I sympathise - I lived with 9 points on my licence for two years - I was a sales rep at the time so would have lost my job. Since then I have always had some kind of satnav in the car which tells me the speed limit for the road + cameras. I know somebody will pop up and say its 'obvious' - but there are so many variances on local roads. For my understanding you can do Speed awareness to cover the new 3 points.

JanglingJack · 01/04/2024 22:53

Goodness knows how I had my licence for 20 odd years and never received 1 point?

My disability excludes me from driving now, but I still can't understand the bare cheek of some.

Mummame2222 · 01/04/2024 22:54

SeismicSalad · 01/04/2024 22:17

Looks like it’s not a “myth” but is official guidance rather than the law. So I think OP is unlucky.

On handheld devices which are less reliable then cameras that are a permanent fixture, people mistakenly think it applies here also.

TheRussiansAreComing · 01/04/2024 23:07

You might be lucky.
they might let you keep it, even with 12 points.
If you do end up at court, dress like you’re going to a job interview and explain how sorry you are. If you smart, sorry and sincere, then they will appreciate the effort and the respect you have afforded them and likely to be more lenient.

explain to them that your disability will make things harder.
i can’t imagine you’ll lose it for long.
mine was a 70 day ban for 115mph.

good luck OP.

PansyOatZebra · 01/04/2024 23:14

Fizzadora · 01/04/2024 21:24

Weren't you offered a speed awareness course instead of the points?

This.

So offence 1 speed awareness
Offence 2 - 3 points
Offence 3 - 3 points
So offence 4 another 3 points? Taking you up to 9?

Katemax82 · 01/04/2024 23:16

HulaChick · 01/04/2024 21:25

Did you do a speed awareness course? If you do that and don't pay the fine then you don't get points (unless you're massively over the limit)

The course costs about 92 quid, buy you won't get points. My husband just did one its not bad

cockeyedoptimist · 01/04/2024 23:21

Thanks everyone for the advice and shared experiences.
for some reason the DVLA website won’t give my details so I’ll speak to them tomorrow .
I know there’s no excuse and unfortunately I have to drive that way ( it’s a 3 lane duel carriage way with a 20 limit ) but honestly I know exactly where the camera is so I only have myself to blame
Great to hear the ban might not be for too long
i appreciate everyone’s advice ( even the tough ones )
