Am I About to loose my driving licence for speeding offences

cockeyedoptimist · 01/04/2024 21:17

Please help as I’m in a panic and can’t speak to anyone official until tomorrow .
I’ve just had a letter informing me of my fourth speeding offence . They are all for doing 22-24 mph in a 20 zone near my house
im so upset and feel so stupid . I drove up and down this road 6 days a week ( so 12 trips )
About a year ago I got 3 speeding tickets in 3 weeks when they installed a camera . I’ve been so careful since then , creeping up the road every day while staring at my Speedo to ensure I stay within the limit . But today I have a letter to say I was doing 23 a week ago
please be gentle as I know I’ve been reckless
and I know how safe 20 mph zones are .

Is there any chance I won’t loose my licence , or is it automatic . A quick google doesn’t look good . I’m so so upset with myself

It just seems particularly bad today for some reason.

Maybe the people with spLD are out today? Shame they don't have a test to join isn't it?

I always assumed this was an urban myth

It is. In practice there is often a bit of leeway but there's no guarantee.

SeismicSalad · 01/04/2024 21:26

This seems weird. I thought enforcement only began at 10% +2, which would be 24mph? Also, surely you were offered a speed awareness course for the first one?

Only true for some police forces. There was an FOI request done by a newspaper a few years ago and many are 10% +2 but some are less and other forces, including my area, refused to provide an answer.

I did however think 20mph limits were unenforceable

millymollymoomoo · 01/04/2024 21:34

The first time you can do speed awareness, pay the fine, no points

Fromm then on its £100 fine and 3 points

so you’ve either done a speed awareness then 2 more fines so 6 points, or for whatever reason you didn’t or for awareness and could now have 9pt which case you’ll get 3 more points and lose your license for a while I believe

look it up on dvla website to see your record.

JoeLovesGina · 01/04/2024 21:34

Not much help now but do you have cruise control? I always set mine going through 20mph zones so I don't speed.

DyslexicPoster · 01/04/2024 21:35

Anyway OP it seems you have bigger problems as you didn't spell check 🙄 I hope that being pointed out added something to help you.

Can you avoid that street? There's a school road in my town that's residents only at drop off / pick up time. I make a mental note to NEVER use it to save any fuck ups

My post has received several likes and I only posted it eight minutes ago so clearly a lot of people agree with me.

What a way to live. Criticising people's spelling and looking for 'likes' for doing so on Mumsnet.

I’m not looking for likes, if people choose to like my post that’s their decision.

Thank you all much
I did do a speed awareness course last year . So hopefully that means I’ve got 6 points. Plus these 3 will be 9 - I’m somewhat reassured ( it’s Met police force if that makes any difference)
I can't seem to get into DVLA website tonight so will try again tomorrow
ironically I spend so much time watching my Speedo as I go through this zone , I take my eyes off the road more than usual - hardly making me a safer driver ! . No cruise control unfortunately.

Letter says course is possibility. Doesn’t ask to semd
licence , so maybe I haven't got 9 as I thought .
I’m already checking bus routes to work and making plans to be without my car . I’m disabled so it’s going to be very difficult, but possible

How could a course be a possibility if you were caught three times a year ago? Surely you did one course last year rather than take all as points????

or were you already in the time of a previous course?

That’s interesting. Why are they unenforceable? I do think it’s a ridiculously tight limit. It’s so easy to go 5mph more especially in all the new hybrids. It’s very hard to maintain an exact speed unlike a manual when you can lower your gears to ridiculous revs, and driving around at 15 is ridiculous.

My car has cruise control so I have been using this regularly but the problem with it is that it also automatically controls the steering and this needs to be turned off each and every time. That’s not safe for city driving when you might need to steer frequently. Or atleast I don’t feel comfortable with it. And staring at a speedometer is not consistent with attentive driving either. I don’t know the solution.

ScroogeMcDuckling · 01/04/2024 21:44

Go to check drivers licence on google.

you need your licence details and your national insurance number and it will tell you how many points u have

Plmnki · 01/04/2024 21:47

Fgs if you drive around this area all the time, why haven’t you worked out here the cameras are placed? They aren’t exactly subtle. Pay attention to your surroundings.

You should know PRECISELY when you were fined and how many points because your insurance company needs this info so you need to know it in order to declare it to them.

TBH you sound a bit ditzy and scatterbrained frankly. Knowing basic stuff like how many times you’ve been done for speeding (and indeed the location of every local speed camera, easy shown on apple maps … hello) is a very basic adult life skill.

You need to grown up and wake up. Put apple maps on your phone showing your route and it will tell you bluntly “speed camera ahead” plus it shows the limit.

This is really basic stuff, come on.

You thought wrong - they’ve been enforceable for a long time now

I totally understand that’s how I come across . That’s why I’m so upset
Thank you for your frankness , it’s not nice to hear but obviously it’s a fair description
I take your point and will use this to make sure I’m not in this situation again

alltoomuchrightnow · 01/04/2024 21:51

as you've got nine, you won't lose it.. this happened to me. But from that day on I was very very careful and got a a tomtom that beeps at me.. I was going through a lot of stress (DV) and not concentrating so racked up the points. One more and I'd have lost licence. It took three years for them all to come off.

My friend did get 12 points and appealed in court and got to keep license but only because he could prove he drives for work.
Not making excuses for myself by the way.. I'm ashamed I had that many..but since using the tomtom I've never had another point

Christ. Kick someone whilst they’re down why don’t you…

MugLove · 01/04/2024 21:53

Of course 20 zones are enforceable.

OP, check your licence tomorrow. If you already have 9, you could well lose your licence. To avoid it you’d have to show that losing it would cause exceptional hardship, which is a high bar.

Hopefully you only have 6.

Cramlington567 · 01/04/2024 21:57

Don't you need to declare the points when applying for insurance. What did you put for that question?

FUPAgirl · 01/04/2024 21:59

Gosh op, if you get away with this somehow, you need a plan. You clearly need to drive at 15mph on that road going forward so that you don't have to stare at the speedo, or you park further away to avoid driving on that road. You sound like a very unsafe driver tbh.

CombatBarbie · 01/04/2024 22:09

bloolagoon · 01/04/2024 21:29

I always assumed this was an urban myth

I got (well the vipers tried) to hand my arse to me on a plate, your speedo states your going faster than you are. In my car the difference is approx 5mph. It's easily findable on Google. It's supposed to be a speed deterrent and has been the case for many years.

So if op was doing 24....her speedo would have been stating between 26-30mph.

Easily tested using your phone and using Google maps showing your true speed against your cars speedometer.

CombatBarbie · 01/04/2024 22:11

One of the many sources for the true reading of your cars speed

www.sciencefocus.com/future-technology/why-doesnt-the-speed-shown-on-my-cars-speedometer-and-sat-nav-always-match

Bovrilla · 01/04/2024 22:14

A totting up offence is deemed worse than a drink driving conviction by most insurers, as it show consistent poor driving and judgement and failing to amend your behaviour.

If you get to 12 points and lose your license your insurance will go sky high. Warning now, sort out your awareness.

SeismicSalad · 01/04/2024 22:17

Mummame2222 · 01/04/2024 21:36

That’s just a myth.

Looks like it’s not a “myth” but is official guidance rather than the law. So I think OP is unlucky.
