To not be excited about light nights and summer?

hermithead · 31/03/2024 19:24

I keep seeing posts on SM about how the light nights are here, and the better weather.

I know this is obviously preferred by a lot of people.

Personally, I'm feeling a little like I'll need to force myself to embrace that.

I've been enjoying going out a walk in the dark, knowing I'll bump into few people and that I can hide under heavy coat and hat.

It's more acceptable to stay home for days on end in the winter, and I'm all for that.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it when I do get out and socialise, etc, but at the moment I'm feeling like it's something I'll need to really gear up to.

Am I weird? Or are there others like me?

I found this all a really depressing read! I adore spring and summer, all these signs of life everywhere - lambs being born, flowers blooming, green everywhere. Just beautiful. I am also someone who adores the heat and the hotter I am, the better!

whiskeycats · 02/04/2024 18:20

And summer is so fleeting and so uncertain in this country. We get rain and cold and grey so much of the time. I cannot fathom not celebrating the few moments of blissful weather we do get.

flapjackfairy · 02/04/2024 18:36

@JJathome .
Lash out and attack ? You are the one putting forward the idea that all summer haters are overweight introverts who want to avoid engaging with life and even suffer from mental issues ?
And in case you hadn't noticed I have put forward my ideas

Icantbedoingwithit · 02/04/2024 18:48

Some people like dark. It’s really that simple. They are not all mentally unwell, hermits, introvert, obese, anxious, afraid to go out or people haters. They like dark evenings. End of. It’s a preference, a fondness, a liking, an inclination. It is not a character flaw. They may be in the minority and that’s ok. They don’t prefer darker evenings to piss people off 😂. I couldn’t care less who likes lighter nights, brightness, warmth and sunlight. That’s their business, it’s in their mental makeup and that’s ok. I would never berate them for it!

EmpressSoleil · 02/04/2024 19:01

I genuinely feel stress at light evenings. I got some new living room curtains which turned out to be thinner than my old ones (but I loved the design). I lasted about 2 weeks before i had to buy blinds to put up behind them to actually block the light. Because by 7pm I just felt so stressed and irritated at the sunshine pouring through. It made me feel tense and nervous.

It's funny that the people most affected by the dark, are the ones who find it so hard to understand the opposite way round. If the dark affects your MH why is hard to understand that the light could also affect someone's MH? Daylight in daytime, fantastic. But I need some dark before bed.

Why not buy black out blinds and draw the curtains?
You can't artificially create daylight outside the way you can make a room completely dark during daylight.

Being very shortsighted I prefer natural daylight to artificial light anyway.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 02/04/2024 19:13

Honestly there's an awful lot of miserable people on this thread, people complaining about people in public parks and children playing outside.

Because I'm quite often out. I have no desire to hide away in the summer, but I still find the light after about 8 somewhat tedious and I would prefer respite from it.

borntobequiet · 02/04/2024 19:16

I like summer, I could just do without BST. GMT all year round would be fine by me.

AntonFeckoff · 02/04/2024 22:17

I would love blackout curtains but I don't have enough space either side of my windows to fit them properly. What I would really like is some of those electric metal shutters you get on the outsides of windows in other countries. They'd be great for keeping things cool during the day.

What always amuses me about these threads is how summer lovers attack winter lovers, but not vice versa. It's almost as if they're worried we're going to start a campaign to get rid of summer or something. I mean we are all mental after all.

RampantIvy · 02/04/2024 22:32

I think you'll find that summer lovers feel hard done by because our weather usually favours winter lovers. So, it's more a case of "it's not fair" if you see what I mean.

This sums it up. Summer can be crap and very fleeting. Winter and endless rain and cold is guaranteed.

If the tables were turned and for 10 months of the year we had lovely warm weather then I wouldn’t begrudge a couple of months of cold.
Why can’t people tolerate 3 weeks of warmth? You have the rest of the year for cold and rain?

But how does my irritation at it being light at 9pm affect your enjoyment of it?

Maybe it’s because summer in this country is not guaranteed and we’re lucky if it lasts for a couple of weeks.

Winter and crap cold endless rain is guaranteed - for at least 8 months. Nice summer days are not.

But I don't begrudge people for liking summer. I wouldn't begrudge people for liking summer if it were summer 10 months of the year either. The OP says she's not excited about summer, and wonders if there are others who feel the same. She doesn't say she begrudges people of it. She didn't start the thread to tell people who like summer that they are wrong or mentally ill.

People like different things. Why does it bother you so much that some people don't like it?

She’s not looking forward to summer.
Maybe moan when we actually have some decent weather.

It’s been shit and cold and rainy for a very long time. We didn’t have a summer last year. We may like different things but you’re doing ok if you like cold and rain. Yet still you bloody moan.

I hate cold weather. I don’t moan about it though.

What amuses me is how many people living in a part of the world not known for its hot, sunny, weather moan about the summer!!

YaMuvva · 03/04/2024 01:01

I’m peri menopausal and DREADING the heat. The cold has been a god send for my hot flushes and I have no idea how I’m gonna cope in summer

Light nights I’m ok with as I have cracking blackout blinds and curtains

Nat6999 · 03/04/2024 01:41

I hate light nights, I can't wait for the summer solstice when the nights start getting shorter. I love dark nights with the curtains drawn, lamps on & feeling cosy.

Alright. I don’t start threads moaning about Winter at any time of the year. But I definitely wouldn’t in the middle of a heatwave (chance would be a fine thing) in Summer. As that would be bonkers.

Yet threads are already popping up about Summer hating (we may not even get one - it was crap last year) before any warm weather even begins. It’s pissing down again. It’s been raining for months and months. If you like that, as bizarrely so many do, what’s there to complain about?

The rain doesn't stop it being light too late in the day. It's less intense, which is nice, but it's still light for ages.

The timing of this thread was about the clocks changing and the impending longer days. Which some people don't like.

It's no bigger deal than that.

What is this mumsnet obsession with feeling claustrophobic cosy?

I don't get it.

There's nothing cosy about being sat on the M25 in the dark and pissing rain. Can cope in the pissing rain or just dark but both and people forget how to drive. Nothing cosy about scraping ice off the car at 5am in the dark

And definitely nothing cosy about the energy bills that come with dark, cold nights.

Delatron · 03/04/2024 08:40

I hate the ‘cosy’ love on here. Haven’t you been all cosy and snuggled up for the last 6 months? Surely everyone wants a change. But apparently not. They just want to fester under a blanket in the dark indefinitely.
