Any other Christians annoyed at what society has turned Easter into?

I’m resigned that the same has been done to Christmas. But for me that is “only” the birth of Christ.

As a Roman Catholic, Easter is of far more importance to me. For me, God’s love for humanity meant he sacrificed his only son. Jesus’ resurrection is literally the embodiment of the victory of light over darkness, good over evil etc.

I don’t wish to gate keep but seeing it reduced to Easter baskets and chocolate rabbits is unpleasant to witness. I’m more annoyed at society making everything hollow and superficial via consumerism and over consumption.

We had the Monarch going to church today for the Easter Service.
I am sure that Easter as a religious festival is not going away for those who need it.

Hello87abc · 31/03/2024 17:44

but let’s face it the bunny and Jesus are just part of the wider fictional world that humans create

sunsetonthemountain · 31/03/2024 17:45

Make your Easter what you want it to be - feeling resentment, frustration or anger towards how others choose to celebrate something will make you unhappy. Focus on yourself and how you go about recognising your faith as being critical at this time is taking away your focus from what’s important and you could be doing something good for others in line with your beliefs rather than disliking the actions of others which are causing no harm

Historians generally think Bede made up 'Eostre' because he wanted something special to explain why the Anglo Saxons called Easter 'Easter', when everyone else in Europe used a Pas . . . name derived from Passover. He couldn't accept that it was just because they faced east during the ceremonies. The Romano British and Irish Christians who were celebrating Easter in these islands for centuries before Bede came along had read the Bible and knew why they were doing what they did, but that didn't suit Bede's political ambitions.

There is abundant linguistic evidence for a dawn/spring/light goddess in Indo-European languages and cultures, whose name is related to the word for the direction of east (appropriate for a dawn goddess). Eos (Greek), Aurora (Roman) Austron/Ostara (German), Ausra (Baltic), Jastra (Polish) and Old Norse Austra. Linguists reconstruct the Proto Indo European name to be Hausos. It seems a bit shortsighted to see all the attested names for this goddess in other related languages and to then say that the Anglo-Saxon one alone must have been made up by Bede.

It is a break from work and a chance for families to enjoy each others' company in their own different ways. I find it very puzzling that any religion might find that objectionable.

samarrange · 31/03/2024 17:46

I took it to mean that the poster regards "climate change" as a substitute for religion, used by people who reject belief in a god or gods (preferably the God of the Old and New Testaments). By this logic, when the people who subscribe to this "false religion" refer to those who do not as "climate change deniers", they do so out of malice and bigotry, and probably "wokeness" too.

Similarly, I think that the poster means that anyone who uses the term "LGBTQIA" does so because they are replacing "true" religion with the woke, liberal (etc etc etc, continued on GB News) faux "worshipping of any lifestyle as equally valid as any other".

However, I agree that the way in which it was phrased is not clear, so perhaps the poster could clarify whether my interpretation of their words is unfair.

Lourdes12 · 31/03/2024 17:52

I rather my kids enjoy a couple of chocolate eggs and celebrate the beginning of spring than being brainwashed with what I think is nonsense

Fraaahnces · 31/03/2024 17:52

I don’t understand why you think the world was any different before this. We just have more people with more things. People as a species are horrible to each other, to other animals and the planet. We shouldn’t need a magical being to tell us this.

maddiemookins16mum · 31/03/2024 17:53

You’re not wrong, Easter is hugely important for the Christian faith yet we’ve got Easter removed from easter eggs (so as not to offend), ticks replacing crosses on buns etc. I can’t imagine aspects of the Muslim or Hindu faith being erased in this way.

Olhfrews · 31/03/2024 17:55

Personally I'm much more offended by the legacy of the Catholic Church as an institution. Think you'll find its much more offensive than the consumerism of Easter.

ThePerfectDog · 31/03/2024 17:56

For me, Easter is about Spring, nothing to do with Christianity.

You're talking a load of crap.

I've been given three eggs today and each one says "Easter Egg" on it.

All of my hot cross buns have got crosses on them.

It's people like you who annoy me the most, not people who don't celebrate Easter.

Have we?

You do know that displays say Easter Eggs, the eggs have the words Easter on the back of them and hot cross buns very much exist.

Why are you parroting right wing bullshit tabloidspeak, do you have an agenda or do you just lack intelligence ?

'Erased' 😂 People are turning away, because they find the actions of the church to be utterly despicable. Nobody is closing down churches, or stopping people from becoming or practising as christians. If Easter is hugely important to you in your faith, go nuts and celebrate as much as you like, nobody's stopping you.

@maddiemookins16mum

The Reform Party just called. They are asking after you.

pictoosh · 31/03/2024 18:03

Easter is a festival of fertility, hence the eggs. It was around long before the Christian faith hijacked it, so yes yabu to be annoyed.
I'm annoyed that Christians turned a perfectly good celebration into a fictional event that serves their mad agenda.

BethDawn · 31/03/2024 18:07

siameselife · 31/03/2024 14:28

I agree that culturally Easter has drifted back to its pagan origins.
The Christian overlay has receded as society becomes more atheist.

It hasn’t though has it? There is nothing pagan about what people do now. There is no celebration of the change of seasons, or worship or appreciation of nature or appeasement or evocation of spirits or other world folk

It’s entirely secular with no real meaning at all.

Yazo · 31/03/2024 18:08

@SpeedyDrama Easter is a Christian festival and the crux of the faith, far more fundamental than Christmas. It's also a cultural festival but there isn't 'another' Easter. Pre-Christian festivals weren't called Easter. If you celebrate Easter in any way it's a bit ludicrous to be annoyed that people remind you of it's Christian roots. Otherwise don't celebrate Easter, no one forces you to. Happy whatever you want this day to be.

‘Easter is hugely important to Christians, so I’m getting riled up about made up facts and chocolate eggs that have nothing to do with Christianity’.…

DanielGault · 31/03/2024 18:09

I'm always bemused (as an atheist, brought up Catholic) that faith is so 'brittle'. People are so 'strong' in their respective faiths when it comes to keeping others down, but when they are questioned themselves, their own personal 'faith' seems to dissolve. Have your faith, and bloody well own it. Live your life according to your own ideals. My life and my ideals have nothing to do with you and yours. Live and let live

iseealittle · 31/03/2024 18:10

I'm with you OP but you're never going to win on Mumsnet. The mere mention of Christianity brings out the worst in some people who feel the need to belittle and ridicule just for fun.
Happy Easter anyway....

What do you agree about?

Easter still exists

What would you like to see happen?

Medschoolmum · 31/03/2024 18:11

I don't personally like the way in which Christians hijacked traditional winter and spring celebrations and claimed them as fair own, but I don't have to partake in the Christian aspects of Easter any more than you have to partake in the bits that you're not keen on. So what's the issue exactly?

BerthaFlapjack · 31/03/2024 18:12

I'm using the bank holidays to spend time with family, celebrate the lighter evenings and doing a few spring rituals. I am also doing some work as the quieter few days mean I can catch up with admin for my business. Chocolate is being consumed at a steady rate.

I find the idea of a bloke being alive again after being killed so weird and unlikely that I have no time for it. Like many pps I am more concerned about the abuse, power and wealth of the church.

Each to their own though and if people want to go to church it is none of my business.
