To ask if anyone has spotting / irregular bleeding and it turned out NOT to be cancer?

I’m in the peri (late 40s). Periods becoming irregular but still having them. Had an episode of flooding so I went to the GP who has booked me in for a scan (which is in about 2 weeks now).

Since this happened I haven’t had a proper period only a very light one which seems to come back every few days in the form of spotting.

I’m worried that this is womb cancer.

I haven’t been back to the doctor because he’s ordered the scan anyway.

Anyone?

Oh yes and more later on. No periods for months, than one, than a dreadful bleeding one like I had never had in my entire life. Finally nothing for 4 years and suddenly out of the blue, some bleeding. This led to investigations and biopsy and came back that it was my hormones still trying to give it more go!

Very normal. They don't consider that the menopause has officially started until you have no periods at all for 12 months. After that any bleeding need investigating but still unlikely to be cancer.

Haggisfish3 · 31/03/2024 13:48

Yes, me. Mine was caused by a polyp and fibroids. Had them removed and more a put in and all resolved now. A consultant told me if it was something sinister, the bleeding tends to be continual.

ImWatching · 31/03/2024 13:50

Yes. When peri hit and my previously regular periods went crazy.
Scan discovered fibroids.

RM2013 · 31/03/2024 13:51

I haven’t had bleeding but was sent for a scan because the GP incorrectly prescribed my HRT the scan showed a polyp and I’ve been referred for a hysteroscopy - polyps can cause bleeding. Try not to assume the worst. The scan should help you find out what’s happening

Comff · 31/03/2024 13:57

Yes. Cervicitis otherwise completely symptomless.

chillidoritto · 31/03/2024 13:57

Thanks - the doctor definitely mentioned polyps. Fingers crossed it’s that - or just crazy hormones!

Not relevant if you aren’t on the pill, but I used to run three packs together until I started getting spotting every day. The nurse I spoke to said try taking a break every month and it should stop, and she was right.

Post menopausal bleeding. Polyps.

Good luck!

YeOldeTrout · 31/03/2024 14:03

Yeah, me, age mid50s, 8 weeks of mostly light yet daily bleeding.

Loads of intimate scans & examinations.
Was nothing.

Maybe because of cervical extropion (sp?) & fibroids. It stopped literally the day before the scan. Didn't happen again.

Capmagturk · 31/03/2024 14:04

Yes I had heavy bleeding every day from May till August last year it was CIN3, my cousins wife has had heavy bleeding at age 29 for months and it's a polyp in her womb.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 31/03/2024 14:05

Just to add another possibility - mine was endometriosis at a similar age to you are now.

Octavia64 · 31/03/2024 14:06

Yes - was endo

EBearhug · 31/03/2024 14:09

Oh yes. Cycles ftom 17 days to over 60. Had an epic 43 day period over Christmas/January. Others have been two days. Current one looks like it's being normal 5 days... (fingers crossed.) Spotting that comes to nothing.

Have recently had internal investigation and ultrasound to check there's no polyps or fibroids or anything. (Had a polyp removed two years ago - which was noticed as part of a regular smear - otherwise, I'd have not known.) There is a fibroid, but not one that looks problematic apparently. Ultrasound was only last week, and the gynaecologist was going to take a look and then I'll be informed whether they want me back for a hysteroscopy or if that's it and just the joys of peri. Treatment is likely to be a Mirena (which I don't really want, and if it's "just" peri, I'm okay with not having it.)

Anyway, irregular bleeding and spotting is very much part of peri. There can be other things going on, but a scan should show that. Try not to worry (which I know is easier said than done.)

coolmum123 · 31/03/2024 14:10

I had this. Had occasional heavy periods then intermittent spotting in between, had a cauterisation first. Which stopped the intermittent bleeding for a while, then it came back. Had scans result if which was no cancer, fibroids etc. Diagnosis was peri menopause. It stopped as my periods got lighter and then stopped altogether.

Tessisme · 31/03/2024 14:20

I had bleeding/spotting between periods in my mid forties and was sent to the hospital for a blood test and scan. The outcome was that the bleeding was of unknown origin. They certainly didn't see anything of concern. It self resolved over the next few months thankfully.

Mapletreelane · 31/03/2024 14:23

Yes. I was as 47 and bleeding and spotting, was quite bad after intercourse. Had scan all OK and went for a colposcopy where they did some kind of procedure (not sure what it was but they did it there and then). All good, not bled irregularly since (3 years) . No C word at all. Hope you're OK OP X

Honeybee45 · 31/03/2024 14:29

Yes I’ve bled virtually every day for nearly 3 years and I’m a similar age to you. I’ve had all sorts of tests and scans and nothing has been found I’m presuming it’s just hormonal. Sometimes it’s just spotting other times it’s really heavy and flooding. It can be pretty depressing tbh I’m just hoping the menopause comes soon

chillidoritto · 31/03/2024 14:29

Thanks for all of these v reassuring replies! Smears are up to date and normal.

The ironic thing is that aside from the bleeding, I actually feel better in myself which makes me wonder if the hormones are giving it a last surge!

I had bleeding after not having any periods. Wasn’t womb cancer. However, was monitored afterwards just in case.

Guttedme · 31/03/2024 14:38

I have thin lining apparently it was said.
I’ve had HPV come and go.

Could be many things x

Brought a book about periods yesterday 🙈

Mercurial123 · 31/03/2024 14:42

I had simple hyperplasia.

Crumpleton · 31/03/2024 15:42

I started spotting in the August, just ignored it then it happened again in the October.
Baring in mind I was menopausal and no period since late 90's I decided to see my GP.
After tests and a chat with the consultant it was decided I'd have a hysterectomy, histology report showed adenomyosis with no signs of cancer.

As said by PP it could be one of many things.

Grapewrath · 31/03/2024 15:42

I had this and had womb polyps. Totally fine.

Greendoorsaremyfavourite · 31/03/2024 16:19

Yes. Turned out to be PCOS.

BookArt · 31/03/2024 19:23

I had spotting and then periods every 5 weeks for 13months. They eventually did a scan and I was then diagnosed with PCOS. I was in my late 20s at the time.

Fingers crossed you scan appt comes through soon as you can't help but worry.
