To ask if anyone has spotting / irregular bleeding and it turned out NOT to be cancer?

I’m in the peri (late 40s). Periods becoming irregular but still having them. Had an episode of flooding so I went to the GP who has booked me in for a scan (which is in about 2 weeks now).

Since this happened I haven’t had a proper period only a very light one which seems to come back every few days in the form of spotting.

I’m worried that this is womb cancer.

I haven’t been back to the doctor because he’s ordered the scan anyway.

Anyone?

Not quite the same, but after 2yrs with no periods I had areally heavy bleed. I was past myself with worry, actually searched on here for some info and reassurance.
Phoned doc, saw practice nurse who immediately put me.on the 2 week cancer path. Had scan within 2 weeks (and smear while I was there!). Everything came back totally normal, no issues at all. Consultant said I'd probably had a 'hormonal power surge' for some reason. Told them they can bloody stop that! When I looked back i had been EXTREMELY emotional 2 nights before which is really not me but def linked with the hormones!
2 yrs on , no other issues.

Several little fibroids with me, the dr said they'd shrivel up and go away and they did.

JFDIYOLO · 31/03/2024 21:38

Yes - several years post menopause, have had two incidents of light bleeding. Both times seen very quickly - transvaginal scan (no problem) found polyps, then had a hysteroscopy with polypectomy and biopsy BOTH UNDER GENERAL ANAESTHETIC. All clear both times.

Apparently 9/10 cases are not cancer, but it is taken very seriously, in case.

The problem is, the NHS has a mysogynistic policy of preferring to do hysteroscopy to women without anaesthetic. It's surgery and we have rights, so please insist on clear respectful conversations about what anaesthetic is available. I wouldn't submit without GA if there is a third time.

Thanks everyone - I have the scan a week on Thursday so thankfully haven't had to wait too long! I was always as regular as clockwork so this is very unusual for me. If it is cancer, is it true that uterine cancer is usually slow growing?

I always always very regularly until 49. Now 51 and absolutely no idea when or if next one will turn up, how long it will be, how light or heavy. The unpredictability is annoying, especially if it previously was predictable. But it's really not unusual for peri.

90% of perimenopausal woman have irregular bleeding. It's literally a symptom of perimenopause.

UsernameShmoozername · 01/04/2024 01:22

Yes, mine was a polyp. Once removed it all went back to normal.

iloveshetlandponies · 01/04/2024 01:33

Yes and I was fine x

Concannon88 · 01/04/2024 01:33

@chillidoritto This probably isn't what you want to hear, but my mother technically did and it was pre cancer. She was 38. So not cancer 😊

My mum did yes when she was in her early forties. It wasn't cancer it was related to the menopause. She had endometrial ablation and the problem stopped. This was 15 or so years ago.

chillidoritto · 31/03/2024 13:57

Thanks - the doctor definitely mentioned polyps. Fingers crossed it’s that - or just crazy hormones!

Yes. I had this. It was just burnt off.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 01/04/2024 09:39

Yes. Spotting and then flooding.
Turned out to be Uterine polyps.
Fingers crossed yours is, too.

MrsToothyBitch · 01/04/2024 10:57

I did- much younger but it was extropic (I think that's the word?) tissue and friable tissue and after precautionary smears I had silver nitrate treatment. Not had recurrence but suspect it may reappear with age.

Worstyearyet · 01/04/2024 11:00

I had this & it was something called hyperplasia (thickening of the womb lining). It can be simple or complex. Mine was found to be simple luckily & it resolved by itself. Good luck OP!

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 01/04/2024 11:06

Yes, I did. It turned out to be PCOS, spotting caused either by hormonal issues or by ovarian cysts (benign).

chillidoritto · 12/04/2024 14:45

UPDATE! It’s a polyp! That and the perimenopause! I went this morning and they told me there and then.

Thank you to everyone for their reassuring comments last week 😊

Oh god yes. They did find some fibroids years ago, and removing those helped. But in recent years it returned due to fluctuating hormones.

You are right to get it checked but there are a thousand harmless things that can cause spotting.

Naunet · 12/04/2024 15:49

I had similar, it’s was a fibroid, in fact I was stunned at just how much a small growth can mess up your periods.

fieldsofbutterflies · 12/04/2024 16:10

Me! Endometriosis.

KreedKafer · 12/04/2024 16:17

It's been happening to me for years. Not cancer. Just one of those things.

Brilliant news! Time for a wee celebration🍾

After having dd I had irregular periods and then nine at all for months, years infact. That was adhesions.

Now I'm older they are irregular with random spotting and light bleeding. HRT hasn't prevented that either. I've had normal cervical smears and normal bloods.
